New York City health officials say that about 75 students at a Queens high school have fallen ill with flu-like symptoms and testing is under way to rule out the strain of swine flu that has killed dozens in Mexico.

The Health Department's Dr. Don Weiss said Friday that a team of agency doctors and investigators were dispatched to the private St. Francis Preparatory School the previous day after students reported fever, sore throat, cough, aches and pains. No one has been hospitalized.

The handful of sick students who remained at the school were tested for a variety of flu strains. If they're found to have a known human strain that would rule out swine flu.

Results could take several days. In the meantime, the school says it's postponing an evening event and sanitizing the building over the weekend.

Mexican authorities said 60 people may have died from a swine flu virus in Mexico, and world health officials worry it could unleash a global flu epidemic.

Mexico City closed schools, museums, libraries and state-run theaters across the metropolis Friday in hopes of containing the outbreak that has sickened more than 900.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said tests show some of the Mexico victims died from the same new strain of swine flu that sickened eight people in Texas and California. It's a frightening new strain that combines genetic material from pigs, birds and humans.

The World Health Organization was looking closely at the 60 deaths - most of them in or near Mexico's capital. It wasn't yet clear what flu they died from, but spokesman Thomas Abraham said "We are very, very concerned."

"We have what appears to be a novel virus and it has spread from human to human," he said. "It's all hands on deck at the moment."

WHO raised its internal alert system Friday, preparing to divert more money and personnel to dealing with the outbreak.

President Felipe Calderon cancelled a trip and met with his Cabinet to coordinate Mexico's response. The government has 500,000 flu vaccines and planned to administer them to health workers, the highest risk group.

There are no vaccines available for the general public in Mexico, and authorities urged people to avoid hospitals unless they had a medical emergency, since hospitals are centers of infection.

Some Mexican residents have started wearing blue surgical masks for extra protection, reports CBS News correspondent Adrienne Bard. The federal health minister has warned people not to go near anyone with a respiratory infection and to avoid kissing - traditional Mexican greeting

I posted on another topic.  That on the Mike Savage radio broadcast, a caller said there were 500  NY students absent yesterday from a school after returning from spring break from Mexico.

I sure hope it's not the swine flu in NY. That's quite a geographical jump. If it is, it's everywhere.

.......................................................................

What type of vaccine..  seasonal?  A new swine flu Vac...?  They said there is no vaccine for it....so perhaps the people who died were coinfected with seasonal flu and the new swine type.

The longer they go without announcing the test results, the worse it could mean  You would think that they would want to get out news to the public immediately if the tests were negative to ease fears.

Now, if it is everywhere, you would also think that random testing on  the 75 students might identify a couple of positive cases mixed in.

If one out of every seven requires hosptilization, or is facing possible death, that will be hard to keep quiet.

Good to see you Chloess ... It could be just the regular flu, but something has officials worried about this outbreak.   Apparently the students had returned from Mexico on a trip when they fell ill.   Or maybe some cases are very severe, unlike the regular flu.   Something has sparked some interest in this outbreak so hopefully we will get an update today.

FOX News and CNN just stated that it is confirmed that 8 cases in New York City and 2 cases in Kansas.  Seen at 5:45 EST.

We should see a lot more numbers infected and it should spread all over the US in the next 5 days,  the CDC will update daily at about 3 pm EST.

How long does it take to confirm Swine Flu?

150 kids sick at St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens

BY Clare Trapasso
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER

Saturday, April 25th 2009, 4:00 AM

A mysterious illness has gripped the nation's largest Catholic high school.

About 150 students were sent home from St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens on Thursday and Friday after developing flulike symptoms, officials said.

The Health Department was testing students to rule out whether it was a strain of swine flu that has killed 60 people in Mexico.

"Whatever it was moved quickly through the student body," Assistant Principal Patrick McLaughlin said.

Similar illnesses gripped large numbers of students at Edmund W. Miles Middle School, in Amityville, L.I., and Horace Greeley High School, in Chappaqua, N.Y., last week, school officials there confirmed. Students recovered quickly, they said.

The school will be sanitized over the weekend, McLaughlin said.

NEW YORK (April 26) — New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg says that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that students at a city high school were infected with swine flu.
New York officials previously had said they were eight "probable" cases, but tests later confirmed that it was indeed swine flu. Bloomberg stressed that the cases were mild and many are recovering.
We must always fear the wicked. But there is another kind of evil that we must fear the most, and that is the indifference of good men.

There will come a time when they won't be able to test all the cases. New York did not test every student who claimed illness, only those they felt were severe enough to be likely cases.

So...if you are sitting around just watching what officials say, you probably are not doing yourself any big service. Right now, if you live in an area where there is high exposure to travelers from Mexico, you should take precautions - especially with your children.

Parents who decide it is time to protect the family do not have to wait for authorities to close the schools. You can follow the procedures and inform the school you are home-schooling your children and educate them at home until this passes.

The well being of the American public is not the first concern of our authorities. If it were, they would have moved to close the border long ago. They have permitted the public to be infected with hepititis and other diseases from the border for years now...not to mention the social and economic problems. You must protect yourself using your own knowledge and common sense.
