United States prepares for swine flu pandemic
The US Government was today preparing for the swine flu outbreak to become a pandemic as agencies battled to contain the spread of the disease. With the number of cases reaching 40 yesterday, health experts and equipment were being sent to affected areas and border police were upping checks on people entering the US by air, land and sea. Although none of the cases have been fatal, the US has declared a national health emergency. The US Homeland Security Secretary, Janet Napolitano, said the government was preparing as if the outbreak would become the pandemic many fear, dispatching people and equipment across the country and stepping up information-sharing at all levels of government and with other nations. New York has now seen 28 confirmed cases, up from eight over the weekend — although officials said this was due to greater testing at the affected school, not new cases. Cases have also been recorded in Texas, California, Kansas and Ohio. Of those infected, only one person has been hospitalised as a result of infection. President Obama maintained the threat from swine flu was a cause for “concern” not “alarm”. |
