Of course if h7n9 evolves into a flu pandemic, it will most likely be significantly more severe than the worst pandemic in recorded history.  This means there could be some bad folk out there looking for supplies - and yours.  Anyone thought about buying some form of self protection or firearm?  Thank goodness you don't need a gun license to own a shotgun.  Wink

Just looking for and purchasing more ammo. Am paying high prices but guns are only rocks to throw if you don't have ammo!

Anyone comes to this house looking to take they will be welcomed with gun in my hand!

We can't buy legal firearms in Bulgaria but I do have two Black Russian terriers, one of which is 32 inches at the shoulder weighs 80 kilos and is one of the best guard dogs I've ever come across. We also have a Caucasion mountain dog who protects the livestock and weighs 95 kilos. my partner is a martial art instructor and is well known and respected in our village so between him and the dogs nobody local would try anything but if it becomes a serious pandemic then all bets are off but most Bulgarians grow enough food to see them through the winter and a lot of people who live in the cities have a village house just for growing crops.

No fire arms here. I have wooden and bamboo swords from doing kendo, along with the typical edc knives, I practice close quarters combat self-defense too. I can make a bow and arrow if need be though. Also I got my s.o. who has a rugby build. He's really smart and would be a good co-strategist when paired with me.

Why do you   think it will be the worst pandemic?  Do you think it will be worse than 1918?

My only firearm advice for you, Hachi, would be to look at the Mosin Nagant rifle if you don't like guns or live in an area where you can't have more utilitarian firearms. (This advice is for Americans only as I do not know your local firearm laws)

For a hundred dollars you can buy the M91/30, and for sixty dollars more, you can snap up a tin can of 440 rounds. It does not have the "Evil Black Rifle" look to the untrained eye, yet it is reliable, accurate, and POWERFUL. The ammunition is slightly corrosive, so you'll have to clean the barrel with a bit of soapy water, then clean with oil as normal, but because it is corrosive, it'll last forever. Literally, FOREVER. There's no magazines to worry about either and at this time, there are about twenty million of these rifles in American hands, thus, if the need arises, you can find spare parts.

Here's why this is the kind of thing you want: It is at about the 30-06 level ballistically so you can use it for hunting pretty much any land animal in North America. Also because it is reasonably accurate and very powerful, you can reach out and touch a bad guy and perforate cover/armor if you have to.

Knowing Jiu-Jitsu/Krav-Maga/stickfighting, etc is hugely beneficial, but you're not going to be able to take down a deer with your knife. Also there's a saying about how bad an idea it is to bring a knife to a gunfight. I've been doing BJJ and Krav Maga for quite a while now, and can handle most customers, but I *ALSO* make sure that I have a gun on me and we're still under rule of law. If defecation hit oscillation, I'd have two guns on me, and one of them would be a rifle.

Since you're good with a bow, check out Bowtech and Matthews bows. Mine is a Bowtech Destroyer 350 @ 65 lbs. It's not as silent as the movies make it out to be, but with it I can reliably strike a man sized target at a hundred yards. If you can, get a bow now and practice with it. It sucks in a big way to have a bow that you're not strong enough to draw. With a modern expanding broadhead you can hit with the power of a rifle. Also, bow ammunition can be used and reused many, many times.

Understand though, that bows don't work like they do in the movies. You know, where the indian shoots the cowboy and all the sudden he's got an arrow sticking out of him. Typically the arrow goes completely through the animal you shoot. I shot a deer with mine last year and I honestly thought that I'd missed at first because I saw the arrow stuck in the ground ten yards behind the deer, and the deer took off like a shot. Then I looked at the arrow and it was *COVERED* in blood. I found the deer about thirty yards away, dead as a doornail. The arrow cut a three inch in diameter, three blades at 120 degrees through the entire animal. It was wicked.

Before that moment I always looked at bows with disdain against guns. After that moment a bow with modern arrows and broadheads it amazingly useful.

It's not that I don't like guns, it's just I'm not sure if they'd let me get one here in CA, since the laws are a bit stricter in the LA metro area. In my hometown (in the central valley), I would be more likely to obtain one, since it is in the rural agriculture area, most the people who went to my elementary school were in 4H and still do those sort of competitions. So most of them own many rifles and bows. We just got a new shooting range there, that I want to check out this summer. Closest range to me supposedly is 15 miles away and my friend never takes me with him. -__- My friend (same one) got evicted from school affiliated housing because he had an airsoft gun, and our school has allowed an airsoft gun club. (I had the same issue with my swords) That's how obnoxious it is around here. Yeah bows are awesome, when I am home, I go to Bass Pro Shops (we only have two of those in CA) and practice with their bows. Some I can not draw very well though. :/ Maybe I should work on arm strength? I have a lot of leg strength, but not as much arm strength as I'd like. Thanks for the tips though, Turbo. I'll look into them.

Anytime.

The arm strength for bows comes from a number of muscle groups. I'm a pullup fan. If I get near anything that I figure can hold my 190 pounds and it's high enough off the ground that I have to jump to it, I start pulling on it.

Pullups are a shoulder exercise with elements of back. I'm not talking about chin ups where your arms are inward. I'm talking pullups where your hands are away.

The other best exercise for shooting bow would be to just do it. A bow shop can dial the weight of a bow back for you to the point that you can reliably draw it. Then you start practicing with that until you actually want the draw weight increased. The other thing is that with the compound bows is that once you've gotten past the draw into the holding position, you're only holding maybe twenty pounds.

Since you're in California your gun laws there are problematic. That said, the laws there only really apply to Semi-automatic (One bullet per trigger pull) and magazine fed firearms. A Mosin Nagant is a bolt action rifle that holds five rounds in a non removable magazine.  It is 100% legal for you to own.

And 7.62x54r is about the only ammo still on the shelves here but expensive - Winchester is almost $30 for 20 rounds, but military surplus is cheaper if you can find it, although it needs a lot of cleaning after you shoot. Big 5 used to have sales on Mosin Nagant rifles all the time at $89-99, but I haven't seen any on display for a while.

TurboGuy, do you use the same screen name of ARFCOM? I do, been there since 05-06. Some good threads on ARFCOM tracking this as well. One is pinned in the Outdoors/Survival section.

I'll tell you what, I have never seen the level of interest in firearms the way I'm seeing it now.

Strangest thing is that I'm seeing interest from people that six months ago I'd have never thought in a million years would even handle a BB gun, much less buying an AR15, a couple thousand rounds of ammo and getting training in not just gun safety, but urban carbine and "Tactical" classes!

At the shooting range in Hudson WI a week ago I saw two upper crust women come in with a rifle case and an ammo can full of .223. The one pulled out a rifle that looks like something I'd take to a tactical or threegun match, loaded it up, and they started drilling their targets.

She came over and checked out what I was shooting, an M1 Garand, and said that it was a beautiful rifle, but didn't know what it was. After talking to her for a while I found out that she was worried about her safety if things got bad and started shooting a year or so ago and caught the bug. She's been taking classes and even went to one I'd been to. This woman could SHOOT! And she was smoking hot to boot at 42, but she looked like she was in her late twenties. Too bad she was married. I'd have pulled out the Ol' Turbo charm and said something profound, like, "huh huh... You're pretty... I like pretty."

I let her fire a couple clips out of the Garand, which she said she now needed one, and went back to her friend. I was floored, I've never seen women like that going to a gun range before.

I've seen more people shooting and buying guns now than ever before.
