I am just beginning to look at solar power for my home if power goes out. I don't know the electrical ratings, usage, etc of my home, although I remember the twonship electrical inspector telling me that we have a 300-amp panel. It is a 4600 sq. ft home, with 5 BRs, several appliances such as as fridge, freezer, etc.. Obviously I need to pick and choose which appliances/lighting I need to power on. If the power is out in winter, then a heater needs to be powered on in a addition to possibly a small TV, laptop for work, etc. If it is summer then a couple of fans need to be powered. I have read recently about homeowners switching to solar power that is connected to grid and they seem to cost upwards of 20K for a home of mine. I am not looking for that now, even though in future I may want to go all solar considering we average about $500/month in electric bill in winter.

But for now looking to buy the following:

2 of Xantrex XPower 1500 Powerpanel at $275 each.

2 of SolarPro 100 Watt solar panel at $700 each.

I am hoping this will statisfy the need for basic power needs. While it may hurt to fork over 2K for this set up, the need for power can't be ignore in the prep work to be done.

Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks.
