Also "western support" to the "rebels"in Syria is supposed to increase. China might be trying to take advantage of the situation in the South China sea. We are in a very dangerous tima-frame. Stephen Cohen quotes Churchill "it is better to talk, talk, talk, then to fight, fight, fight". Since the times of Churchill the situation in the world did get far more complicated. A  big "East-West-confrontation"simply means Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD !) http://scgnews.com/the-ukraine-crisis-what-youre-not-being-told ,
http://www.debka.com/article/23766/US-Seals-seize-runaway-North-Korean-flagged-tanker-to-recover-Libyan-oil-cargo

War is not an option and should not even be discussed as an option. Politicians who forget that should be send away by the public immedeatly !

Dutch Josh, we are definitely stumbling with poor foreign policy that puts us nose to nose with theRussian military in several areas.  They literally were nearly on top of ships which were blocked in harbors in the Ukraine.

The move of other leaders to fill a power vacuum left in terms of ineffective and bad foreign policy moves, seems fairly clear.  China is moving to claim control of fairly large areas, Russia is basically trying to take back and control the Ukraine and Crimea, and even the Philippines will be targeted by China.

Sanctions have not stopped Iran from continuing to develop nuclear weapon technology and the talks in many countries including Afghanistan appear permanently derailed and ineffective.

The backlash from this is a shift in the global balance of power and despite a military and nuclear arsenal that could wipe out the planet in the U.S., leaders look to the strong and those who follow up even on threats, to fear and truly negotiate with.

Icons of the stature of Lawrence of Arabia who thundered cross the anvil which "had never been crossed" and George Washington who when charging alone to demonstrate raw courage later found numerous bullet holes in his clothing, are nearly non-existence in non-veteran leadership.

We have had few hard chargers in the U.S. recently, except those who have gotten us involved in truly costly wars or tied us up for years in conflicts going back 3,000 years and unlikely to be resolved in the near future.

It is a lesson in the use of resources to "pick ones battles".  Rome ignored it and wound up fighting elephants in India and so spread out the armies which  were fighting mostly to rape, pillage, and burn. This also goes back to Alexander the Great, who met considerable resistance in India.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_elephant

What is being said here is we have come to come up against our elephants, not in India, but all over the world- the Taliban.  This one emerges from the cover of the landscape and with many cells in place now threatens to take over unstable Northern Africa.

Point - if we said we were going to go in and kick butt in Syria, we should have done just that- not fight a battle by proxy using Al Queda affiliated cannibals and those murdering catholic priests.  We probably would not have gotten in a war doing the same thing Israel does frequently hard hitting targets in Palestine and blowing things and people up.

Perhaps we have followed the talk softly mentioned by President Roosevelt,  but having lost the big stick.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Stick_ideology

The line begins at the voting box and is truly the only real effective big stick either male or female voters can wield to implement change. Unfortunately, some lines only form every four years.

http://www.theweek.co.uk/europe/ukraine/57830/why-are-polish-men-london-getting-military-call-papers  NEXT time you take a tray of tea and custard creams to the nice gang of Polish builders renovating your semi, they may seem a little distracted and anxious. Ask them why, and they will answer that some of them have in the last few weeks received call-up papers as army reservists.

Turkish P.M. Erdogan is said to be supporting the Muslim Brotherhood in the Arab World. Due to regional elections he banned Twitter because of tales of corruption and having an affair are not in his favour. Some reports claim Russian ships moved closer to the Syrian/Turkish coast. Russia still hasa navalbase in Syria.

In Transnistria the army shot down an Ukraïn-drone spying on that country on the west-side of Ukrain (Russian speaking Eastern-part of Moldavia).

Another frontline might be Bahrein. The Sunni-government is backed by Saudi Arabia (also with troops, Bahrain is linked via a roadbridge with the K.S.A.). On the eastern side Iran is supporting the Shia-majority in the population in its demonstrations for more freedoms.

Satori,a "small" nuclear war would not destroy the world. All of our governments have told us this for years so that they could milk more tax money out of us to prevent it. I DO NOT mean that I want a small nuclear war or one of any size, but it would not destroy the world. Johnray1

http://beforeitsnews.com/war-and-conflict/2014/03/world-war-3-main-events-kiev-to-fall-within-hours-as-intelligence-reports-russian-invasion-of-ukraine-likely-2451386.html

Beforeitsnews is good in speculation. Russia might take more steps against the Ukraine but so far they did not invade other parts of the Ukraine. Putin might wait a while to see how the IMF takes over control in Kiev and the effects that has on the already very low incomes of people in the Ukraine.

Turkey has elections the 30th of March. Erdogan (PM) might be interested in more aid for the "rebels"in Syria. On the other hand also the US/EU is loking for ways to "support" the "uprising"from Jordan. Israel will take actions to prevent arms falling in the hands of major riskgroups for Israel. Without the west the "civil" war in Syria would be over, dictator Assad would have won, Russia (and China Iran) would gain influence.

Saudi Arabia has problems with Iran. If Israel would attack facilities inside Iran they would do so over Saudi-air space. China would use termoil elsewere to take further steps in the South China sea. I think that North Korea is "the unfriendly face"of the P.R.C. Without China North Korea would not exist.

Yes, my friends we are indeed involved in war.  Realistically I would imply the war which was generated after the twin tower disaster is coming back to where it started from.  This war has traveled around the world.  Is that not a world war?  Does a world war directly imply the use of nuclear weapons?  What about a currency war?  Have those nuclear weapons already been used and sold off as "tests" "drills" or "accidents"?  I.E. Fukushima Daiichi reactors #1 through 4?  What about the BP oil rig explosion and the "oil leak" that followed?  What about the millions of gallons of Corexit 9500 and 9527 solvents used to "clean up" the massive oil spill?  Coorperate espionage?  All acts of some kind of war?  What about the war on drugs, crime, poverty ect.?  I suppose by definition these are not components of "WW3" but suppose rather every man, woman and child must be armed to be considered WW3.  What defines "WW3"?  What about the supposed "Swine Flu"?  Everyone must panic thier way to the vaccine stands, which never actually happened.  Yeah there were a few gullible people that bought into it and got thier shots.  Those poor souls found out that it was not in thier best interests to get this swine flu shot.  If you read back what I wrote you will see the NBC's that are not of any sorts from my imagination.  For the unintiated let me clarify "NBC" Nuclear-Biological-Chemical and that is a reference to 3 types of illeagal warfare prohibited by the Geneva Conventions Rules of warfare and engagement.  My friends, WW3 has happened and is still happening right under our noses.  Must a bullet or two be fired directly at you to consider this WW3?  Where does the line get crossed?  Please decide soon because the fate of millions more rely on a clear understanding that we are smack in the middle of it.  If one can not come to grips with that then there is nothing more I can say.  How many more countries must fall before it is observed the WW3 is upon us?  How many millions more must die?  How many Trillions of more dollars must be wasted?  How many economies must collapse and how many more homelss are you looking for?  How many franchises must go bankrupt?  How many more bank bailouts do you need?  For me, one of any is to many.  I don't know if I can trust any of you to take on that kind of responsibilty or make that kind of judgement.  From my point of observation if it hasn't kicked your door in and taken you hostage, it isn't happening.  When you look at it from a casualty perspective it makes more sense to call it a war.  I read an article not to long ago about a 4 year old Syrian boy wandering the high desert because his homeland is at war.  I can not say if there is merit to this article or if it is media sensationalism to sell Americans another illeagal conflict however if the news observes it then it should be looked into for further investigation.  You see, as an American you will never see the stigma put against you by other nations citizens or as I should stand corrected, You don't see.  Put yourself in the minds of the Iraqi citizens for a moment.  From that perspective Americans seem the likeness of the Nazi SS movement of WW2.  What about Libya?  What about Afganastan?  Now let us take a look at the Ukraine.  How far will the United States push this war?  Must the U.S.A. provoke Russia and China to a full scale nulcear attack?  Must the U.S.A. be invaded and occupied by all manor of foriegn troops?  How far does this have to go?  Would it suit you to have American blood spilled on American soil to be considered a World War 3 scenario?  You have to tell me, educate me because pehaps I have lost the meaning and don't fully understand.  I suppose the BIG question is, are we going to allow this?  Well, the answer may be too little too late.  I suppose if I were one of the control systems operators I would target the entire U.S. population next and eradicate them as they pose a serious threat to my global domination game.  Perhaps the Americans have already been targeted and eradication must come to full swing very soon so I could wrap things up and move on to the next big thing.  I can't have an American population armed with all kinds of fire power either, that makes eradication very difficult.  Granted not impossible but the struggle that would ensue would call for a massive suppression with even greater fire power.  You know, if I spent all that money on arms, it would be a shame to waste it when I could write laws that prohibit Americans from having access to any fire power.  That would save me a lot of time and ammo.

http://www.debka.com/article/23878/Saudis-parade-nuclear-missiles-for-the-first-time-in-defiance-of-US-Iranian-nuclear-accord Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has nuclear weapons against Iran. In a sort of aliance with Israel KSA might be preparing to unable nuclear installations in Iran. (Also Turkey is believed to be after nuclear weapons. Israel and Pakistan, North Korea, make things dangerous).

Nergal, in a certain way historians have the idea that "world wars do not stop", the French-German war from 1870-71 led to World War 1 wich brought us World War 2, maybe even that story can go further back. How Rothschild made millions after Waterloo in 1815, Napoleontic-wars.

Wars demand money. For that matter it could be argued that some groups might be interested in putting more value behind their currency to make their currency more than just a piece of paper, metal or digital idea. Energy wars can back currencies.

http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2014-05-31/israel-deploys-3-nuclear-armed-subs-iran-coast-iran-warns-forceful-response-evil-act

Russia has made a billion-roebel, 30 year-gas-deal with China last month. Saudi Arabia and Iran seem to be getting better relations. In Syria Assads forces are pushing out a very divided opposition. Assad still backed by Russia and Iran, some rebelgroups by Qatar and KSA, others by NATO or Israel. China now is in conflict with Japan and Viet Nam (and Philpines, Taiwan) over South China Sea.

Last month in the Netherlands the number of refugees, a lot from Eritrea, (just south of MERS-KSA), climbed from a 1000 a month to a 1000 a week. MERS mixed with civil war in Libya and Iraq.

A hundred years ago world war 1 started. There is a lot of attention for that fact. But the Spanish-Flu may have cost more lives than both world wars put together.

General Discussion in my opinion, on this site, should be connected to the main-subject-that is flu (by definition flu is avian !). Global unrest and upcoming virusses may increase the spread of those virusses.

In my opinion putting posts on religion can do great damage to this forum. Religion, what people see as basic importance in live, is important but should be discussed elsewhere.

I am trying to understand who is fighting who, backed by who, in the Middle East. ISIS in Iraq and Syria was backed by KSA, Gulf States-even trained in Jordan and Turkey by NATO/CIA. Till things got out of control and the same ISIS became a threat for KSA, Jordan, Turkey and even Israel.

The present war between Gaza and Israel will likely escalate with Hezbollah firing missiles from Lebanon and ISIS getting active from the Golan Heights.

Saudi Arabia and Egypt send troops to the Jordan-Iraq border, ISIS is trying to check some border control points with Jordan and the KSA.

At the moment both the US and Iran are fighting against ISIS in Iraq, with help from other nations. The situation in Afghanistan, Pakistan, western China/Uyghur/Sinkiang is not getting better, China's relation with its neighbours does not look promissing.

The parallels between the lead up to world war II and what we have now are scary.

Global stock market crash and subsequent financial crisis. This caused massive wealth movements.

currency wars and trade wars developed (which we have now)

Skirmishes between Japan and China (check)

Fighting over Poland/Ukraine

Highly militaristic and aggressive national ideology behind many nations. USA is Insane in this area. If you watch China News a huge portion is devoted to military issues.

There are many more parallels. Do some research

Its definitely a dangerous time..

http://rt.com/op-edge/171244-isis-violence-reminds-khmer-rouge/ ISIS is extremism, a bit Khmer-rouge-like but also reminding me of the Taliban blowing up statues or the Islamic extremists in Timbouctou, Mali, destroying century old monuments.

http://rt.com/usa/171680-ron-paul-arm-syrian-rebels/ at least Ron Paul has a vision that would keep damage limited; do not go into a conflict that is not in your interest without a good plan !

The stock-market is pumped up by the central banks, politicians do not seem to understand either economics or foreign policy most of the time and act like puppets for their sponsors. There is no "free-market", there is no market when a few people control almost all of the money.

War is an act in the interest of a few, at present what wars have in common mostly is that they are energy related. The most serious situation at the moment might be the Middle East. In relation to this forum, the number of refugees, with health issues, (MERS, with a bit of bad luck even Ebola etc, TB) will likely increase/explode. The spanish flu got that dramatic due to W.W.1.

Dutch Josh, it is always a trap or an ambush when the Israelis invade Gaza. The land area is so small that you can not hide a build up to invade. The Palestinians know where the attack will come from.-----But the large invasions are usually accompanied by many smaller scale attacks, some groups no larger than 4 men. They do most of the pin point work. Johnray1

http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/Analysis-Israel-is-looking-for-the-middle-ground-in-Gaza-362358 The analysis is talking about two options, a small invasion of the Gaza strip but repeating that kind of operation every time when Israel thinks such an operation is useful or taking over the Gaza strip.

A third option in my opinion should be serious peace talks. Maybe Russia and China can mean something ? Maybe even Assad in Syria might be willing to talk with Israel, the Egypt leadership ?

This third Gaza-war is costing the Israel economy millions of us$/€ per day. Without serious initiatives from new "partners for peace" this war can explode. There are groups now in Syria that want to get Israel more involved in that war.

Some of the ideas expressed in this thread are terrifying and I wonder where they came from.

First off, there is NO such thing as a small scale nuclear conflict. If anyone uses a nuclear weapon anywhere with malicious intent there are no limits as to what can happen. The only thing that can be predicted if such an event occured is that there will be a reaction. The size and scope of that reaction cannot be predicted exept that none of us here will be ready for its magnitude. Its worth knowing that modern nuclear weapons are orders of magnitude more powerful than the ones we see on tv from the 1950's. Its also worth knowing that when a nuclear weapon goes off, only 3 to 4 percent of the material actually explodes, the rest gets spread far and wide. The blasts you see on tv from Bikini Atol or similar are like comparing a fire cracker to a MOAB.

I know its comforting to think that Russia is broke. Look again. In the years since the cold war ended, the Russian Federation has set itself up as an energy broker to the whole of europe. Sorry, but they are one of the richest countries on earth right now whereas the US is broke. The cost of keeping the US army in the field since 9/11 has had 2 effects other than making the US bankrupt. The first is the personnel are tired and fed up, the second is the equipment is worn out and in need of replacing or upgrading. It doesnt look like the US has the money to do either of those things.

Shock and awe may have looked impressive, but it was followed up with scaled escallation and troop rotation which has only served to train those who were thought defeated in exactly how the US military machine operates, and where its weaknesses are. Those alive in the 60's and 70's have seen this happen before, and seen how defeat is inevitable once your enemy starts putting all it has learned about you to use.

If further proof of just how strong Russia now is, is needed, just look at Ukrain. I can guess how the US government and media are presenting that, but the reailty is the US and her allies have had their faces rubbed in just how strong Russia truely is now. The lack of any response apart from some truely pathetic sanctions shows just how over extended the US has become.

In case anyone had not noticed, Russia is not afraid of the US anymore.

You are right to make the distinction between government and people. One of the problems though is the rest of the world tends not to differentiate, and they dont differentiate between institutions either. Right now the damage being done to the reputation of the US military by all the spying going on towards allies is making those allies consider distancing themselves in a big way. I strongly suspect that if the American people elect the event horizon of pure evil, Hillary Clinton, next year we will see the end of the US as a dominant force in our lifetimes. Thats a scary prospect.

But what is the alternative? We all watched what the GOP did to Ron Paul, and we all saw the horror that was Mitt Romney making a complete ass of himself during his world tour after being selected as candidate. The guy seemed like some wierd attempt to create the ultimate politician out of bits of other politicians..the problem was they didnt program him to shut up.

So for now I guess your stuck with a complete fake who cant even forge his own birth certificate and thats so sad. I bet Nixon could have forged his using nothing but a penknife, some ink and a potato. The problem is he managed to introduce socialism into the US with obamacare, and when the costs for that ramp up, and they will, the us military will suffer and get starved into none existance due to lack of funds. Just like every single other country that promotes dependency on the state as appose to freedom of the individual.

You are right, its up to the American people, lets see what they do when it comes time to vote.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4-l0o3tOXw0 Soldiers who want to be a hero, number practically zero, but there are millions who want to be civilians. War is not a sign of strenght. It makes poorer more poor, does increase healthproblems, makes problems larger. Looking at history there is a link between wars and pandemics.

NATO’s Europe commander advocates stockpiling a base in Poland with enough weapons, ammunition and other supplies to support a rapid deployment of thousands of troops against Russia, British media reported.

General Philip Breedlove’s idea would be presented to members of the alliance at the upcoming NATO summit in Wales in September, according to The Times.

The present US administration has a foreign policy without any direction or clear goals. The bases for that policy is decades of wrong decisions, supporting the wrong leaders (from Saddam Hoessein against Iran to Osama bin Laden in Afghanistan against the Soviet Union).

Commander Baldwin was in Kiev for high level consultations with the Ministry of Defense.  In the course of his meetings with DeputyDefense Minister Ihor Kabanenko, Baldwin announced on behalf of the US government that:

“The United States of America is considering the possibility of granting Ukraine the status of an ally without membership in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

… Baldwin said that the American side highly appreciates its cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and that it is ready to provide comprehensive support to them.

He stressed that a draft law on prevention of Russian aggression, adoption of which will allow Ukraine to obtain the status of an ally of the United States without NATO membership, is currently under consideration by the United States government.

… President Petro Poroshenko has asked the United States Congress to declare the self-proclaimed “People’s Republic of Luhansk” and “People’s Republic of Donetsk” as terrorist organizations and declare their members as terrorists.Poroshenko believes that when sanctions are not working, there are grounds for appeal to the United States Congress to grant Ukraine the special status of a major ally outside NATO (like Israel, Australia, and the Philippines) to enable it to solve its security problems.(Ukrainian News, July 24, 2014, emphasis added)

The granting of the “status of ally outside NATO” would set the stage for the possible deployment of US and NATO forces inside Ukraine in the context of joint military operations with the Ukraine Armed Forces and National Guard.

In the Middle East a third "Intifada" (Uprising) on the West Bank seems to be on its way, Hezbollah in Lebanon is preparing attacks against Israël. Israël seems to blame Iran for the "terrorist attacks" and fears Iran capabillity for nuclear weapons wich may result in an Israeli attack (with support from the KSA) on Iran.

Russia will be looking into the MH-17 story. They know what role they played. I do not think Russia allows Buk-missiles in the hands of separatists. Those weapons are wanted by terrorist groups all over the world and worth millions of € or $. The Buk-system also has a safety-system, I do not expect that a rebel simply can push a button and there goes the missile. Even if the separatists did "steal" the weapon from the Ukrainian army Russia does not want the separatists to have them, nor would that system be of much use for them. High flying airplanes are not a major threat for them.

If the Russians did not fire the missiles, if the separatists did not have them, who fired them and why? Russia knows wether Putin's plane may have been a target. If, in their perspective, Ukraine tried to kill Putin, how are the supposed to react ?

The IMF-appointed government in Kiev is not doing its job and getting more and more dependend on western support. Wich side will make the first move into the Ukraine, Russia or NATO ? Will that coincide with further escalation in the Middle East (or North Africa, China ?)

Russia voiced concern on Thursday over a U.S. proposal to station elements of a missile defence shield in South Korea, saying the move could provoke an arms race in the region.

The commander of U.S. troops stationed in South Korea last month said he had proposed deploying a THAAD advanced missile-defence system to the country to counter the threat of North Korea's weapons capabilities.

"Such U.S. statements cannot but cause concern," the foreign ministry said in a statement. "This development will inevitably have a negative impact on the strategic situation in the region and could provoke an arms race in Northeast Asia."
