Did we ever find out the results on the possible New Mexico case?  Showing Ebola symptoms and coming from Sierra Leone.

The 30-year-old New Mexico woman is currently in isolation as a precaution at the University of New Mexico Hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to the virus which has killed more than 1,200 people overseas as of Tuesday, according to health officials. A New Mexico woman is being tested for the Ebola virus in Albuquerque after recently returning from Africa, according to state health officials.

And in Sacramento, Calif. hospital officials say a patient “who may have been exposed to the Ebola virus” is also in isolation as blood samples are tested to rule out the virus.

The 30-year-old woman is in isolation as a precaution at the University of New Mexico Hospital after experiencing symptoms similar to the virus that has killed more than 1,200 people overseas as of Tuesday, according to health officials.

The woman from Bernalillo County has had no known exposure to the disease but had been teaching in Sierra Leone, one of several African countries with known cases of Ebola, according to the state's health department.

They said blood work was sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta where it will be tested for the virus. They expect to have the results back by the end of the week.

"The Department of Health is working closely with UNM Hospital and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on this investigation," said Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. "UNM Hospital has isolated the patient, and is following the appropriate protocols to ensure other patients and health care workers are safe."

AP PROVIDES ACCESS TO THIS PUBLICLY DISTRIBUTED HANDOUT PHOTO PROVIDED BY CDC AP As of Tuesday the death toll from the virus, pictured, has surpassed 1,200 overseas, according to the World Health Organization. The majority of the deaths have been in Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone.

The unidentified patient returned to the U.S. earlier this month before complaining of a sore throat, headache, muscle aches and fever.

Those symptoms are usually followed by vomiting, diarrhea, rash and in some cases, bleeding if in fact infected with the virus. A person infected usually does not have symptoms from two to 21 days, according to the World Health Organization.

Less is known about the California patient, who is, being treated at the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center.

“In order to protect our patients, staff and physicians, even though infection with the virus is unconfirmed, we are taking the actions recommended by the CDC as a precaution, just as we do for other patients with a suspected infectious disease,” the medical center said in a statement. “This includes isolation of the patient in a specially equipped negative pressure room and the use of personal protective equipment by trained staff, coordinated with infectious disease specialists.”

As of this week there are no known Ebola cases in the U.S. other than two U.S. health workers who were evacuated from Liberia earlier this month.

A spokesman for the New Mexico Department of Health confirmed Sunday that the department and the national Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are working together to test a 30-year-old New Mexico woman for Ebola. University Hospital in Albuquerque has isolated the woman, who has no known exposure to the disease.

According to Dr. Robert Bailey, associate dean for clinical affairs at The University of New Mexico’s School of Medicine, it is unlikely the woman has Ebola, but staff wish to be cautiously prudent.

“There really isn’t a risk to the public at this point,” Bailey said. “The risk of Ebola is not having the patient in the hospital — being in a situation like the folks in Africa are experiencing right now with folks getting sick in rural villages and nobody recognizes it.”

Bailey said the hospital will send test samples to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and hopes to have the results by Wednesday or Thursday.

The woman, a Bernalillo county resident, was recently teaching in Sierra Leone and returned to the United States earlier this month. Sierra Leone, along with Liberia, Nigeria and Guinea, is one of several countries in West Africa with known cases of Ebola. According to the CDC website, Sierra Leone has had 810 suspected or confirmed cases, with 733 of those being lab confirmed, and 348 deaths as a result of Ebola.

A hemorrhagic fever virus, Ebola’s symptoms include severe headaches, fever, muscle pain, vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms generally show up between two and 21 days after victims contract the disease.

Ebola can be transmitted by blood, bodily fluids or by coming into contact with an object contaminated with the infection.

“It’s infectious through direct contact of bodily fluids of an Ebola patient.” Bailey said. “It’s not transmitted through the air.”

The Food and Drug Administration has approved no vaccine or drug to combat Ebola, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture recently warned that  online offers to provide such drugs are fraudulent.

Bailey said doctors can only treat the symptoms of Ebola, monitoring body fluids, reducing the fever and making sure patients do not get dehydrated.

Bailey said potentially contaminated items at the Albuquerque hospital would be removed and disposed of through a set of “well-worked-out precautions.” Hospital staff follow precautionary CDC guidelines for infection control in treating such patients: “The staff gown up with nonpenetrable gowns, gloves, eye shields, face shields, disposable foot guards and masks.”

Such precautions are not unique to dealing with Ebola, Bailey added. “The issue of a patient returning from overseas travel and then spiking a fever is a fairly common issue. Dealing with patients who may have infections spread by droplets or bodily fluids is something we do almost every day,” he said.

Two Americans — Kent Brantly and Nancy Writebol — are still undergoing treatment for Ebola at Atlanta’s Emory University Hospital after returning from Liberia, where they became infected while performing missionary work.

Vigil said the Bernalillo woman had not traveled to Santa Fe since her return to New Mexico.

Good job techno, thanks.   It's a little confusing as the article says she had no known exposure to Ebola, but she is coming from Sierra Leone?  Scratching my head over that one.

Been trawling the net and can't find any further Mexico ebola stuff.  There is a blogsite claiming the test was positive but no source is given and I suspect it is all hot air.  Sorry, I can't trace anything else.  Its like the "case" in Wales which just dissapeared.

I don't think this is a cover-up, its just that there is so much gruesome news out there the newshounds can't be bothered to report the negatives.

Incidentally, how's the neck?

lol, thanks for looking.   Neck is doing better.  The hole is almost half closed up.

I suppose if she or the Cal case was positive, there would be no hiding it either way.

I walked into work this morning to have a coworker inform "Ebola's here". I had a feeling he was talking about the Sacramento case, so I had to jump on AFT to see if test results were back yet - when I went to bed they were still pending. Still no word?

California Patient Deemed 'Low Risk' for Ebola

As the 2 Americans stricken with Ebola continue to receive treatment in Atlanta, a new potential case of the deadly virus has been reported in California.

According to a CNN story, the patient checked into the Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center. Much like similar suspected cases in New York, New Jersey, and other states, the patient is not believed to be infected with the disease.

A statement from the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) deemed the as-yet-unidentified patient as “low-risk” of having Ebola.

“People returning from the affected areas who may be at high risk for Ebola should be isolated and their blood sent to CDC for testing,” the statement said. “Some low-risk patients, like the one from Sacramento, may be tested out of an abundance of caution.”

The statement from CDPH also said that there have been no confirmed cases of the Ebola virus in the state or any “high risk” patients checking into local hospitals.

“The risk of the spread of Ebola in California is low,” the statement continued. “Any patient suspected of having Ebola can be safely managed in a California hospital following recommended isolation and infection control procedures. Suspect cases of Ebola will be investigated by local health departments in consultation with CDPH.” -
