Nurses organization claims workers are not trained to deal with Ebola

HOUSTON -
The National Nurses United, which is the largest organization of nurses in the United States, is speaking out and placing blame. They claim health care workers aren’t being trained and hospitals aren’t prepared to handle Ebola.

The latest two victims are both health care workers who took care of Thomas Duncan, the man who died from Ebola at a Dallas hospital last week.

“Initially what was said was that nurses weren’t following protocol. What the nurses are saying …there was no protocol,” said Roseann Demoro with the National Nurses United.

What’s happening in Dallas is sparking serious conversations about hospital safety everywhere, including Houston.

Local 2 reached out to the nurse’s union, which also represents nurses in the Houston area for an interview. We spoke by phone to one registered nurse who asked not to be identified for fear of losing her job. She lives and works at a hospital near Houston and said they have been given very little information about Ebola and there has been no training, not even a formal meeting to discuss the possibility of handling a patient with the virus.

She said many nurses are scared, She said they feel unprepared and mistakes are bound to happen, which puts even more people at risk.

Local 2 reached out to Texas Health Presbyterian in Dallas for comment about the criticism, but they have not responded.
