Texas to develop state-of-art Ebola treatment center

A state-of-the-art Ebola treatment and infectious disease containment center will be developed in north Texas in response to the Ebola scare that has rattled the state and the nation.

Gov. Rick Perry on Tuesday revealed plans for a Dallas County facility, the centerpiece of a plan put forward by Perry's recently formed Texas Task Force on Infectious Disease Preparedness and Response.

The announcement came one day after the 21-day Ebola monitoring period concluded for 51 Dallas area residents who had contact Thomas Eric Duncan, the only U.S.-diagnosed Ebola fatality. Duncan died Oct. 8 at Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.

More than 100 people are still being monitored, and two nurses who treated Duncan contracted the virus that has killed more than 4,500 people in West Africa.

Both Texas nurses were moved to facilities in other states for treatment.

The Dallas County center will focus on protecting health care workers and the public from the spread of pandemic diseases, Perry said.

Methodist Health System will allow the use of an entire floor of the Methodist Campus for Continuing Care in Richardson, including an Intensive Care Unit wing, for the care of infectious disease patients. Two other hospitals are providing equipment, staff and expertise.

"In the event of another diagnosis this facility will allow us to act quickly to limit the virus' reach and give patients the care they need in an environment where health care workers are specially trained and equipped to deal with the unique requirements of this disease," said Gov. Perry.

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston has also been designated an Ebola treatment and infectious disease center, the governor said.

"We are fortunate to have such talented and dedicated leaders here in North Texas, and at UTMB Galveston, who are willing to step forward during a time of need," he said.
