This isn't good.. Hope he's negative! 5-year-old boy being tested for Ebola in New York City By Larry Celona and Kenneth Garger October 27, 2014 | 3:30am Modal Trigger 5-year-old boy being tested for Ebola in New York City Bellevue Hospital Photo: AP A 5-year-old boy who just returned from West Africa was transported to Bellevue Hospital Sunday with possible Ebola symptoms, according to law-enforcement sources. The child was vomiting and had a 103-degree fever when he was carried from his Bronx home by EMS workers wearing hazmat suits, neighbors said. “He looked weak,” said a neighbor. “He was really, really out of it.” The boy returned with his family from Guinea Saturday night and five members of the family were being quarantined inside their apartment, sources said. Boy in New York to be tested for Ebola
Oct 27, 2014
Reuters) - In New York, a 5-year-boy who visited West Africa and has a low-grade would be tested for Ebola, City Health Commissioner Dr. Mary Travis said on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program.
The boy's exposure history to the virus was unclear, she said. "He has ... traveled to one of the three affected countries and has a fever, and that's what triggers an assessment," she said. He would be tested for the virus, with results available later on Monday, she said. His fever was low-grade, she said. Local media said the child lived in New York City's Bronx borough. |

Boy who traveled to West Africa being tested for Ebola at Bellevue Hospital, results expected MondayThe child had a high fever when an Emergency Medical Service ambulance crew rushed him from his Bronx home to Bellevue Hospital about 9 p.m. Sunday. A source said the boy had recently been in Guinea, West Africa, but had not displayed any symptoms after going through a check at Kennedy Airport on Saturday.NEW YORK DAILY NEWS The city’s health commissioner said they will know later Monday whether there is another confirmed case of Ebola in New York City. A 5-year-old Bronx boy who recently returned from Ebola-wracked West Africa — and who was being tested for the deadly disease — had a “low grade” fever when his temperature was last taken at 7 a.m., Dr. Mary Travis Bassett told MSNBC. The fever “triggers the fact that we’re going to keep him in the hospital and test him,” Bassett said. “He has no clear exposure to Ebola, but his exposure history is unclear. By early afternoon we should know the results of the test.” Mayor de Blasio urged calm and said the boy is at Bellevue Hospital with his mother, who sources said is 40-years-old. “The child at first did not appear to have any symptoms,” the mayor said. “The fact that the mother shows no symptoms at all is a very encouraging sign.” The boy had been visiting relatives in Guinea for month with his family and returned home on Moroccan Airlines early Saturday, landing at Kennedy Airport, sources said. When he was rushed to Bellevue on Sunday evening, he had a temperature of 102.7 degrees and bloodshot eyes, the sources said. If confirmed, the boy would be the second New Yorker to come down with the disease since an Ebola epidemic erupted in the poverty-stricken nations of Sierra Leone, Guinea and Liberia. The boy is in an isolation ward at Bellevue Hospital — the epicenter of the city’s response to the Ebola crisis. Officials have also quarantined his 52-year-old father, a sister, who is 15, and two brothers, ages 13 and 2, sources said. “As a further precaution,” a team of so-called “disease detectives” are now tracing all of the young boy’s contacts “to identify anyone who may be at potential risk,” an official said. MIKE SEGAR/REUTERS A 5-year-old boy from the Bronx was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and is being tested for Ebola.
The wife of the building super said the sick boy’s family have “lived here for a while.” “It’s scary,” said Clara Gonzalez, 59. “If I go out, I ain't going to touch the door. I don't want to take any chances. They say it's not airborne, but better safe than sorry.” Bellevue is also treating Dr. Craig Spencer, a 33-year-old emergency room doctor who is the city’s only confirmed Ebola patient. Health Department employees also retraced Spencer’s after he arrived at JFK on Oct. 17. He didn’t show any Ebola symptoms until six days later. Spencer, who had also been in Guinea and working for Doctors Without Borders, was rushed to Bellevue on Oct. 23 after he reported having a fever. He was listed Monday in stable condition. Ebola has killed nearly 5,000 people in West Africa but claimed just one life in the U.S. — a Liberian who was visiting his son in Dallas. With Dale Eisinger, Nancy Dillon and Jennifer Fermino |

So, this 5-year-old boy "returned" from W. Africa which means he went there for a time and then came back. I don't know the circumstances surrounding the 5-year-old's going w/family to W. Africa, but I can't imagine putting any little ones at risk like that. |

Did he go there by Himself?
Who else might be involved. |

Good question. This problem is going to be bigger than we first thought. Once they ban outgoing flights, that will end, because next time they go it's on a one way trip.

Yes if we get more cases. The pressure to do something would be too great even for the most complacent politician. That is what happened in New York & New Jersey, although some say it was a knee jerk reaction spurred by fear... it was actually what the people were calling for. You let them get a few more cases imported in & the people will have Christie's head or any other Governor that did not do something!

Ulimately Obama will be criticized for acting too late and his legacy will be shot. With the out going flights, no screening on the planet can stop imported cases, and they will increase. The airport scans is smoke and mirrors and will do nothing. There is a 21 day incubation, lol. Would the thermal scans have identified Duncan or spencer when they arrived? Of course not. It's a useless way to spend tax dollars.
Yes, I'm afraid ultimately they will ban outgoing. |
