US Soilders returning from Africa will be quarantined 21 days in Italy before returning home.

U.S. soldiers returning from Liberia are being placed in isolation in Vicenza, Italy out of concern for the Ebola virus, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reports.

The soldiers being monitored include Maj. Gen. Darryl Williams who was the commander of the U.S. Army in Africa but turned over duties to the 101st Airborne Division over the weekend, Martin reports. There are currently 11 soldiers in isolation.

They apparently were met by Carabinieri in full hazmat suits. If the policy remains in effect, everyone returning from Liberia - several hundred - will be placed in isolation for 21 days. Thirty are expected in today, Martin reports.
10,000 people have been infected with Ebola in the outbreak that came to light last March, and nearly half of them have died, mostly in Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia.

Maj. Gen. Gary J. Volesky, commander of the 101st Airborne Division, assumed command in Liberia on Saturday of the growing contingent of U.S. forces in Liberia.

"You need our support demonstrated with action not words, and action is exactly what we are going to provide," Volesky said.

A 25-bed hospital in Monrovia, Liberia's capital, should be fully operational in the first week of November. American doctors and nurses will care for infected health care workers there. About 600 U.S. service members are now in Liberia - which was established almost 200 years ago for former slaves from America, according to the U.S. Department of Defense. The U.S. also set up Ebola testing labs.

Soldiers coming back from serving in Ebola-hit Liberia will be kept in quarantine for 21 days, the U.S. Army said Monday — even though they were kept apart from any Ebola patients.

A dozen soldiers, including Major General Darryl Williams, their commander, will be confined to a housing complex with barracks, a dining hall and a gym but no outside access at their home base in Vicenza, Italy, the Defense Department said. They will not be able to return to their homes or interact with other personnel at the base, except those working in the quarantine area.

Williams turned over command of troops in Liberia to Army Major General Gary Volesky and his 101st Airborne Division on Saturday.

Two defense officials said the Joint Staff is reviewing whether to follow the Army's lead and recommend that all service members returning from Ebola-stricken areas be under 21-day quarantine. Army Chief of Staff General Ray Odierno decided over the weekend that all U.S. soldiers would be quarantined when returning from Liberia and Senegal but the other services have not amended their rules yet.

Soldiers and military contractors including engineers, medical specialists and logisticians are not directly treating Ebola patients but are helping build medical centers and training local health-care workers. About 600 U.S. military staff are in now but President Barack Obama has committed to send at least 4,000.

The World Health Organization says more than 10,000 people have been infected in the Ebola epidemic in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea and says the only way to stop it is with a giant push of medical aid.

New Jersey governor Chris Christie has been battling fallout from his state’s controversial decision to forcibly quarantine a Doctors Without Borders nurse, Kaci Hickox, who initially showed a fever when she left a flight arriving in Newark from Sierra Leone Friday but who was released Monday after testing negative for the virus.

Like 21 days is a big deal. Good grief.   Hickox is beyond a wimp. Could do 21 days standing on my damn head. The MSF heros have the balls of field mouse.

The "ball to body" size of field mouse is very significant. They are actually quite large.

Ya pheasant, you would know buddy. Lol I'm kidding. Boy this thread is taking a sick turn. My attorney always uses that analogy about people. I'll let him know the truth. No difference between a horse and a mouse in that regard. Now if you start telling me about the horse... Then I know something is up.

Nahh, your right Albert, I was just adding some twisted humor, but the 21 day quarantine is what is necessary, no one can deny that.

Some sort of either supervised home isolation or quarantine.  They need to stay put and not go anywhere, period.  It's for their safety as well as ours.   All it takes is for one case to shed the virus earlier than expected, such as a day or two before the elevated temp, and that cough or sneeze could be a killer.  A lot of people think that patients can be infectious just before a temperature.  The stakes are very high in that case and not quarantining or fully isolating is reckless and border line crazy.   They're gambling by waiting for them to show a fever first. Until they know more about this, they should tighten this thing down hard - and now.  The only info they have on this thing is from people like Spencer and Hickox who are doing 30-day tours of duty, so not a lot of solid information.  Since they clearly don't understand this virus fully, then full quarantine or secured home isolation.  Give Hickox and Spencer a damn ankle bracelet if need be.

Another problem is that we're banking on the elevated temp too much as the first sign.  Diarrhea, headache, or fatigue could come first before the elevated temp, meaning you're infectious now, and then you chalk up the signs to drinking a few too many at the bowling alley the night before and disregard it.  Should be isolated and quarantined and hickox should toughen up a bit.

Also think Fauchi should go to Sierra Leone and hug a couple "probable" cases prior to symptoms to show how harmless it is.   Let's say they're on day 5 after exposure, and then Fauchi can give them a big public hug and kiss to prove how safe.   Margaret Chan ate Chicken in China to prove her point during the H5N1 scare years ago about how harmless it was.  Of course she was later widely accused of downplaying the situation, but that's another story.

Anyway, since this thread is done and falling by wayside, thought I would get off a couple last thoughts/shots
