Topic: Egypt’s 2015 bird flu death toll rises to 11 Posted: February 14 2015 at 2:24pm |
Egypt’s 2015 bird flu death toll rises to 11Ministry Of Health - YOUM7 (Archive) CAIRO: A 35 year-old man died of H5N1 avian flu in Cairo Thursday, marking the 11th death in the country from the disease in 2015, the Health Ministry announced Friday. Three new cases have also been discovered and the patients have been hospitalized, according to the statement. “The infected patients include a two-year-old child in Delta governorate of Beheira, a 42-year-old man in Cairo and a 39-year-old man from Delta governorate of Sharqia,” stated the ministry. So far, 33 reported bird flu cases diagnosed this year. They include 10 cases which have recovered, 12 undergoing treatment and 11 deaths, Youm7 reported Wednesday. Most avian flu cases in Egypt have been detected in impoverished rural areas, where villagers traditionally raise poultry on the rooftops of their homes to supplement their diet, Ahmed Abdel Hamed, a former health ministry official previously told Youm7. The disease first appeared in Egypt in 2006. The death toll of bird flu in the country reached 10 in 2014. The health ministry has repeatedly urged citizens, who deal with poultry and livestock, to be cautious and take preventive measures to avoid infection. It also called on those who suffer from symptoms of the flu to head to nearest hospital within 24 hours to increase the chances of their recovery. From 2003 until October 2014, there were 686 cases testing positive for H5N1 globally, of which 393 were fatal, according to a World Health Organization (WHO) report published in October.

Every single time a human is infected with this H5N1 virus we are one step closer to a global pandemic.
This is very serious indeed.
On 10 February 2015, a human case of A (H9N2) influenza was detected by the routine national avian influenza surveillance system in Aswan ...

Two die from bird flu bringing Egypt's 2015 death toll to 10Most cases of bird flu in Egypt have been found in rural areas where women often raise poultry in their homes A 16-year-old girl in Egypt’s Nile Delta governorate Sharqiya and a 33-year old woman in Cairo died late Tuesday from bird flu, the health ministry said; bringing the total deaths in 2015 from the H5n1 virus to ten. A two-year-old girl in Beheira governorate in the Nile Delta was cured from the virus, according to a health ministry statement. The statement also highlighted that 11 cases are currently being treated. Last year, 11 people died from bird flu. Most cases of bird flu in Egypt have been found in rural areas, where villagers, especially women, tend to raise poultry in their homes, increasing exposure to live or dead infected birds. The virus first appeared in Egypt in 2006.

The WHO report up till the 26th January 2015 has 23 cases and 11 deaths. http://www.who.int/influenza/human_animal_interface/H5N1_cumulative_table_archives/en/So the figure of 11 deaths is at least a month old (they are reporting just once a month so the figures to near the end of February should be out soon). ps. the figures for Egypt for 2014 were 31 cases and 9 deaths. So January was as bad as that whole of the previous year, albeit from a low number (so it might not be significant yet).

Egypt bird flu death toll reaches 15 in 2015 The Health Ministry announced Tuesday the death of a 33-year old woman in Cairo of bird flu, the infection of a 16-year old girl in Sharqiya, and the cure of a 2-year old child in Beheira. The woman's death has raised the number of victims in Egypt this year to 15. The ministry added in a statement that the number of bird flu cases receiving treatment at Health Ministry affiliated hospitals is 11 to date. Other recent deaths include a young man who died on Wednesday 25 February and two other victims who passed away earlier in February. All were from Fayoum. The death rate from bird flu is at 37.4 percent in Egypt, compared to 55 percent on the international level, particularly in China. According to the State Information Service, approximately two million people involved in the poultry industry and eight million of their relatives have been affected since the emergence of bird flu in Egypt. In 2014, the World Health Organization published a report on influenza A (H5) activity from 18 February to 23 September of that year. The report mentioned that influenza cases in Egypt included poultry and humans.

Egypt’s bird flu death toll rises to 13 in 2015: Health MinistryPoultry Farm - YOUM7 (Archive) CAIRO: Two women from Egypt’s Delta governorates of Menoufia and Sharqia have died of H5N1 avian flu, marking the 12th and 13th deaths in the country from the disease in 2015, the Health Ministry announced Saturday. “Three cases, including a two-year-old child from Cairo along with two men in their 40s from the delta area have also tested positive for the virus and have been hospitalized,” according to the statement. So far, 38 bird flu cases have been diagnosed this year, including 10 cases which have recovered, 15 undergoing treatment and 13 deaths, Youm7 reported Saturday. Most avian flu cases in Egypt have been detected in impoverished rural areas, where villagers traditionally raise poultry on the rooftops of their homes to supplement their diet. The Health Ministry announced Thursday an “exceptional plan to combat the virus.” It has repeatedly urged citizens who deal with poultry and livestock to be cautious and take preventive measures to avoid infection. It also called on those who suffer from symptoms of the flu to head to nearest hospital within 24 hours to increase the chances of their recovery. The disease first appeared in Egypt in 2006. I think the news sources are being very lazy. Some may be keeping tab on that is happening, but my guess is that (say in the last posted article) they just looked up the last official figure and added the current number to it, ignoring any other cases they might have reported in the preceding days. I also thing that in the rush to get instant news there is not the time for proper investigative journalism. Also it might be like "old uncle Tom" after a few at the pub with his "why let the truth get in the way of a good story?", which in this case translates "why let research delay the publishing of this breaking story?"

the news source is their ministry for health....
and the other worring aspect of this is,
they only test for h5n1 if the sick person has been in contact with
chickens........
