Indiana HIV outbreak cases now 81 as virus continues spread in, around rural southeast county
 

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — State health officials say 81 people have now tested positive for HIV as an outbreak of the virus in southeastern Indiana continues among intravenous drug users.

The state Department of Health said Friday there have been 74 confirmed HIV cases and seven preliminary positive HIV cases.

The agency says all of the preliminary positive cases so far have later been confirmed as positive.

Mike Pence declares emergency as HIV epidemic rocks Indiana

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence declared a public health emergency in one county on Thursday in response to an HIV epidemic linked to intravenous drug use in the southeastern part of the state.

The Indiana State Department of Health has confirmed 79 people have tested positive for the virus, with all cases originating from Scott County, officials said. The county normally sees fewer than five new HIV cases in one year.
