Monsoon fuels fears of swine flu resurgence in Maharashtra

With Maharashtra experiencing pre-monsoon showers on Friday, the cooling of temperatures has sparked fears of a renascence of the lethal H1N1 virus which has already claimed two lives in the State as the death toll crossed 530 since January this year.

According to health authorities, two persons, one in Mumbai and the other in Nashik succumbed to swine flu while a further four cases, two of which are said to be critical, have been reported.

A 50-year-old woman, a resident of Mumbai’s Mankhurd area died in the city’s KEM hospital last month while another woman passed away at the Civil Hospital in Nashik on May 30.

With this, the total death toll in the State now stands at 535 with more than 5,270 swine flu-infected cases being diagnosed since the beginning of the year.

Alarmed at the surging death toll, the Devendra Fadnavis government, late last month, accepted the recommendations of the 12-member technical committee it set up in April this year.

The Maharashtra Communicable Diseases Prevention and Control Technical Committee had proposed vaccination of people falling under the high-risk category to counter the galloping pace of the swine flu virus in Maharashtra.

As per the committee’s classification, the high-risk category includes people suffering from obesity and diabetes as well as pregnant women and children with asthma.

As per its suggestion, the State government ought to conduct a vaccination drive before June 15 as the rate of H1N1 virus transmission could soar rise after July when the monsoon sets in.
