A Colorado teenager died earlier this month just days after coming down with flulike symptoms caused by the plague. Yes, the plague.

Taylor Thomas Gaes was a promising athlete who was killed by septicemic plague, a rare form of the bacterial infection that he was thought to have contracted from a flea bite.

Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona have occasionally seen cases of the plague due to bites by infected fleas. However, last year’s Colorado outbreak had some cases that were thought to have spread to other people from a person who had been infected by his dog.

comment: As we have seen in the past this can be carried by fleas and with our very large pet population - animals that are not well cared for could become carriers of the fleas that spread this.

It's pretty widespread in the Southwest, and we've been seeing signs posted at most of the SoCal campgrounds about plague in the wildlife for many years now. Tragic death considering it's treatable when caught early enough.

"Buy it cheap. Stack it deep"
"Any community that fails to prepare, with the expectation that the federal government will come to the rescue, will be tragically wrong." Michael Leavitt, HHS Secretary.
