Novel AI virus discovered in China

Chinese researchers who analysed influenza viruses from poultry in live-bird markets say they have discovered a novel H5N9 virus that represents a hybrid of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu virus and a human H7N9 virus, along with other elements.

The Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) of the University of Minnesota reports that Chinese researchers who analysed influenza viruses from poultry in live-bird markets say they have discovered a novel H5N9 virus that represents a hybrid of the highly pathogenic H5N1 avian flu virus and a human H7N9 virus, along with other elements.
The authors took samples in 2013 from seven chickens, a quail, and a duck at two live-bird markets in Hangzhou, a city in Zhejiang province, where human H7N9 cases had occurred, according to their Jun 17 report in the Journal of Virology. The report does not indicate that any of the birds were sick.

13 viruses

The team isolated 13 viruses from the samples: 1 H5N1, 2 H5N9, 4 H9N2, and 6 H7N9. By sequencing the whole genomes of the two H5N9 isolates, the researchers determined that their hemagglutinin (H) protein matched that of a 2012 H5N1 isolate from Vietnam, while their neuraminidase (N) component derived from a human H7N9 isolate from Hangzhou. They also noted that the structure of the H cleavage site is characteristic of highly pathogenic viruses. The six internal genes resembled those of H5N1, H7N9, and H9N2 viruses.
The pathogenicity of the novel virus in mammals was tested by exposing mice to various doses. Some mice exposed to the highest doses died, but mice that received lower doses didn't get sick, and the authors concluded that the virus causes low mortality in mice. They also found that the virus didn't spread from infected mice to others placed with them. The team determined that the novel H5N9 virus prefers avian-type cell receptors, known as alpha2,3 sialic acid, rather than the human-type receptor, called alpha2,6. They said this may explain why the virus caused low mortality in mice.

Live bird markets potential transmission risk to public health and poultry industry

The report says a highly pathogenic H5N9 virus was found in turkeys in Ontario in 1966, and low-pathogenic H5N9 strains have been found in mallards, northern pintails, and occasionally chickens in the past few decades. But the novel virus is "totally different" from those, the authors concluded. "This newly isolated H5N9 virus is a highly pathogenic reassortant virus originating from H5N1, H7N9, and H9N2 subtypes," they wrote. "Live bird markets represent a potential transmission risk to public health and the poultry industry."

That's cheery - an avian hi path H5N1/H9N2 and human H7N9 hybrid

Once again I would like to thank the Nation of China and the Chinese people for making this all possible!

Being the diplomatic person I am with phrasing things, ya, China is a cesspool of diseases.   I still swear that their best kept secret that spawns these diseases is largely from eating what we consider pets.

Exactly right, arirish. They are single-handedly coming up with just about every novel flu virus we're seeing, and now newly adapted human strains are mixing with hi path viruses to produce some seriously scary combinations. While we're watching the obvious candidates, a completely novel strain could hit the ground running at any one of a number of wet markets and overwhelm us in a matter of months. Thanks, China Thumbs Up

They have a dinner platter called the poo poo platter.

Their experiment on the H5N1/H7N9 hybrid sounds quite reassuring. If youre a mouse lover.

Exactly. Since when have mice been used to test flu viruses? Last I looked, I don't resemble a mouse Ermm

I personally think govts (not sure which ones) are intentionally creating these viruses right now and getting them into the bird population.

I've followed AI aloooonnnnnggg time now and I can't get over how we suddenly had a number of new flus show up last season and now we have a different version over here in our birds and now we also have MERS spreading, Ebola that won't go away it seems and now more novel flu viruses.

Anyone else seen this many new viruses pop up so, so, so suddenly?

El Niño, La Niña, global warming, global cooling, earthquake activity up then down, solar cycles, etc. I think it's nature at play here as well. I don't trust the government (whatever that is), for very differant reasons.

There are quite a few proposed explanations for why we are seeing a jump in AI worldwide.  My favorite is that, as populations grow and formerly poor nations (China, Egypt, Indonesia etc.) become wealthier, they desire more meat in their diet; in order to provide this meat, their primitive agriculture systems are pushed to limits and beyond.

We've known for many years that flu outbreaks tend to occur on flyways (I learned that in 1979!), so there is a natural reservoir of viruses in these countries that infects domestic fowl via feces in water, air etc.  Also, oriental agriculture tends to be vertically integrated, where the wastes of one critter (say, ducks or chickens) are fed to another (often swine).

Don't grimace, we feed plenty of poultry litter to US beef cattle!

So, the combination of all of these forces is that the Orient is a large, fertile mixing ground for the incubation of all sorts of viruses, particularly AI.  Throw in some corrupt businesspeople and a government scared to admit flaws, and these things tend to explode rather suddenly.

Pass the soy sauce!

Yes, and also farmed tilapia as the chicken litter aids in algae development which that fish loves.

I agree with your assessment but I also think that down the road we may see an unusual absence of new bugs emerging. Unless 'n' if something doesn't get us all first. Then we won't be here to know I guess.

Relax! - Any viruses - old and new - can be killed the moment they touch us! - You wanna stay absolutely healthy all the time? - You got it! - Only my discovery (the greatest one of all time on Earth and maybe in the Universe) can rid this world of any diseases - I got the power (and everybody can possess it) to erase any diseases from the face of the planet in a matter of days - I got my WVCD - The Weapon of Virus and Cancer Destruction - By far more powerful than the human immune system, keeping it intact all the time, for any pathogens are killed the moment they touch us - Just an exercise for a minute a day - The cure and prevention of any diseases, known on Earth for millions of years - Infections, Cancers, Diabetes, MS, Alzheimer, Parkinson's Disease, Cardiovascular Diseases and Strokes - Even Tibetans and Yoga don't know how to stay absolutely healthy all the time - Staying absolutely healthy all the time means living in another, higher dimension, like the extraterrestrials do - The price of the WVCD for the whole world is 5 billion EURO - Just 25 million EURO per country - Can be paid to me by the governments of all countries in the world - Then everybody (kids and adults) will stay absolutely healthy all the time - Never getting sick of any diseases even for a second - Like Extraterrestrials!

Alright, I'll bite. How do we know extraterrestrials never get sick?
