http://bonhamjournal.com/2016/01/18/ebola-resurfaces-in-sierra-leone-hours-after-world-health.html

After covering the outbreak on here for some time it appears that just as they were pronouncing West Africa free of Ebola it is back.

A body has been tested positive for Ebola in northern Sierra Leone, just hours after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared West Africa Ebola-free, a local health ministry official said. "We still anticipate more flare-ups and must be prepared for them".

Already 10 other flare-ups have taken place in areas where the spread of Ebola was thought to have ended, raising new questions about World Health Organization procedures in assessing whether an epidemic was really over.

The U.N. health agency said Friday that Sierra Leone's government was moving rapidly to contain the new threat, but it was not clear how the 22-year-old woman who died may have contracted Ebola.

"Authorities are tracing the woman's contacts and have dispatched teams to the area for investigations, the AP reported. Certain areas will be quarantined", Kellie said.

"We are now at a critical period in the Ebola epidemic as we move from managing cases and patients to managing the residual risk of new infections", Bruce Aylward, WHO's special representative for Ebola response, said in a statement.

In total, more than 28,600 people worldwide were stricken with Ebola during the outbreak, according to the WHO. He called the announcement of Sierra Leone's latest case on Friday "unfortunate timing"

The outbreak in Sierra Leone has started.

http://www.cnn.com/2016/01/21/africa/sierra-leone-ebola/index.html

A second case of the deadly Ebola virus has been reported in the West African nation of Sierra Leone in as many weeks -- just seven days after health officials declared a major epidemic in the region had ended.

The two cases are connected. The latest patient -- a woman being treated in the capital, Freetown -- is an aunt of a 22-year-old woman who died of Ebola last week in Sierra Leone, World Health Organization spokesman Tarik Jasarevic said Thursday.

The aunt, who had cared for her sick niece, tested positive for the virus after developing symptoms while in quarantine Wednesday, Jasarevic said.

^Not surprising, since the virus infects bats, porcupines and other sources of "bush meat" in the region.

I'm sure there is always a low-level of infection of Ebola going on in the bush.

Completely agree, Chuck. I'm actually surprised that health officials aren't qualifying their statement with "but it's going to be back". They must know that an animal reservoir is probably now well established in West Africa, and like the Congo, Ebola is going to continue to reappear in outbreaks of varying sizes for the foreseeable future.
Hopefully the population of the countries most affected now understand the disease better than they did at the beginning of the outbreak, and will deal with it better next time. Because there will almost certainly be a next time.

  • The Government of Sierra Leone (GoSL) confirmed a new Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) case in Tonkolili District on January 14, following consecutive EVD-positive post-mortem test results. A rapid response team deployed to Tonkolili the same day to assist case investigation and response efforts.
  • On January 21, the GoSL confirmed that a family member and close caretaker of the deceased individual subsequently developed EVD, and immediately began receiving treatment at a specialized EVD treatment unit (ETU) in Freetown, Sierra Leone’s capital city.
  • Guinea began a 90-day period of heightened surveillance on December 30, as the Government of Guinea (GoG) and humanitarian partners transition to surveillance and recovery activities

A new case of Ebola has been confirmed in Sierra Leone, officials said Thursday, the second since west Africa celebrated the end of the epidemic last week.

The World Health Organization said the new case involved the aunt of 22-year-old Marie Jalloh, who died of Ebola on January 12.

Sierra Leone's head of medical services, Brima Kargbo, has announced a vaccination programme for those quarantined following Jalloh's death in the central city of Magburaka.

The vaccine being used, VSV-EBOV, is the first to have proven effective, according to experts, and Kargbo has said the operation would continue "until all the contacts are vaccinated."
