Gee guys on the East Coast, the grocery stores are empty, gas lines very long, some gas out, no plywood, think East Coast people need to prep.
I hope people are leaving because this looks like this could be really bad. My sister has her 96 yr old mother-in-law in Palm Bay and she did not know this bad hurricane is hitting in 24 hours at her MIL home. This very old lady (who can not walk) and her daughter at 66 yr old are 20 miles from the ocean. My sister thinks they are far enough away...lol this is the same sister that thinks I am crazy for prepping! I can't believe that people have been looking at this hurricane for a week and did not have their cars topped off and gas cans filled especially if I was going to leave. I would have had water and food stocked so when I came back I had food and water. Anyone who lives on the east coast and does not have hurricane shutters is NUTS! People are not finding any plywood to cover their windows...go figure. Storm surge and rain will just ruin your home with tons of water. Do we have anyone on AFT in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina? |

NC here; I wanted to get a new portable generator for my parents tuesday because their old one finally died and was already having a hard time finding one. Sams Club said that had 4 of the largest ones and that was about it. Had to go to Greensboro or VA otherwise.
Not sure if it's related but I did see some gas stations on monday who were showing out of regular gas. I don't know why because the pipeline that was broken has been fixed for over a week now and most stores are back to normal. My coworkers in Raleigh who didn't grow up in the coastal plain (I grew up in Kinston, NC) were clueless. They asked me about it yesterday and were non-chalant about it but I pointed out to them that we're in the fall and it's time to get ready for winter ice storms now too. They need to go ahead and buy up the stuff they'd need for at least two weeks of sheltering in place for ANY event within the next 4 months minimum. Duh! Only one coworker paid me any mind. The rest think I'm nuts for how I feel about always being prepared. One reason I love this board... you get it. You don't live in a panic but you believe in being prepared. |

oh yeah, forgot to answer the main question... yes, those in the coastal plain were saying yesterday that all the stores were already out of the staples we love to grab for hurricane food/drinks. water, bread, canned food, snack food, etc were wiped out in most places.

There's a video clip on our newspaper website that shows empty shelves at Walmart this morning, and I'm with you FluMom, they are all crazy not to be prepared. Seriously, who would wait 'til the last minute when living in such a prone area? You'd think, at the very least, that you'd have a stack of plywood sheets, cut and ready to fit the windows of your house, just sitting in the garage waiting for the next hurricane. It's madness not to be prepared.
The thing that some people still don't seem to realise is that being prepared can literally save your life. |

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I agree with all you said but want to remind that not everyone has available cash on hand to be prepared all the time. I know I didn't when I was in college. Lots of people live check to check and do the best they can and still barely make ends meet. Those people are the ones who I really feel for during this tough time.
I am originally from Kinston, NC and it's having historical flooding right now that is on a scale I have never seen in my life and I am 56 yrs old. I personally know of lots of people who have lost everything and are displaced right now. |
