'We know what you are doing': UK PM Theresa May slams Russia for election meddling
61 reading now London: Dispensing with diplomatic niceties, British Prime Minister Theresa May on Monday night charged Putin's Russia with attempting to "undermine free societies" and "sow discord" in Britain and the West by "weaponising information" and "deploying its state-run media organisations to plant fake stories." "So I have a very simple message for Russia. We know what you are doing. And you will not succeed," May said. "The UK will do what is necessary to protect ourselves, and work with our allies to do likewise." May's condemnation, in a speech before business executives in a London banquet hall, are quite different from the remarks over the weekend from President Donald Trump, who appeared to take sides with Russian President Vladimir Putin. "He said he didn't meddle," Trump said Saturday, answering questions in the press cabin on Air Force One, about growing evidence of Russia's involvement into the 2016 campaign. "I asked him again. You can only ask so many times. . . . He said he absolutely did not meddle in our election. He did not do what they are saying he did." RELATED ARTICLESTrump believed Putin was "sincere" in his denials, and even felt insulted by the accusation, according to a Washington Post report. May is confronting Russia now because of growing concern in London of widespread attempts by Russia to manipulate social media across Europe, "included meddling in elections and hacking the Danish Ministry of Defence and the (German) Bundestag among many others," the prime minister said. Yin Yin Lu, of the Oxford Internet Institute, told The Times of London that 54 accounts on a list of 2752 linked by Twitter to the Internet Research Agency tweeted about "Brexit," Britain's planned exit from the European Union. The Internet Research Agency is a Russian "troll factory" in St Petersburg, the newspaper said. |

Dutch Josh-We have the same kind of "discussion"here in the Netherlands. When politicians do not get what they want they blame it on Russia. Basicly politicians want to tell you what "fake" news is and what is real.
Freedom of press is a cornerstone of democracy. Politicians seem to be willing to give that up for a powergrab. Internet could bring freedom to find a lot of information but governments turn it into a controlmechanism. The "totalitarian democracy"is on its way ! The 2028 news; Everybody loves politicians, there is no poverty, healthissues, climatechange etc. North Korea as a role-model for western democracy ? UK Prime Minister Theresa May did offer reassurance to everyone in Britain: “I have a very simple message for Russia, we know what you are doing and you will not succeed.” You could hear the sigh of relief. With May showing she doesn’t have a clue what she herself is doing, Britain can at least take solace in the fact she knows what someone else is up to. May’s speech writers must be thanking their lucky stars for Russia. They needed an easy target that didn’t involve mentioning any of the following during this keynote speech: • Brexit is heading for the cliff edge. The government has realized that no matter how much rhetorical twaddle it fires at the Eurocrats, they’re not budging in negotiations. • No Tory intern appears to have entered Parliament for a couple of decades without being groped. • May’s own ministers now apparently don’t have enough respect for her leadership to even regard it as an inconvenience. • Since it became clear she is one disaster away from losing her job, there have been at least four. May told the audience, the absolute definition of establishment, that Russia “is seeking to weaponise information deploying its state run media organisations to plant fake stories and photo shopped images in an attempt to sow discord in the West and undermine our institutions.” To paraphrase, Britain’s centuries old institutions are at risk because someone in Russia is accused of tweeting and messing around with pictures. Turns out that nuclear deterrent was a waste of cash after all. GCHQ should just hire a group of teenage girls to send some nasty trolling tweets back. This would be over in minutes! It’s just a little insulting for the institution she was addressing, which has been around since 1189. May said Russia had been “meddling in elections.” That must have been the booze talking, because the following morning her spokesman confirmed she hadn’t actually seen evidence of that. The real fake news was more evident in May’s ability to just say things which ignore the reality of Brexit altogether. |
