Well we're overdue for an 8.3 or larger down the great Alpine fault. It regularly ruptures every 290 years and the last one was in 1717, so we're 11 years overdue. Statistically it's been proved that it is more likely to rupture this afternoon, than tomorrow morning.
Where I live we are surrounded by fault lines, so I expect when the Alpine fault goes, our ones will go too. When the Kiakoura quake happened in Nov 2016, which was a 7.8, our house shook continuously for exactly 2 minutes. We were all in bed at the time and just stayed there (which is the recommended action if you're in bed). It felt lovely, but obviously we were far enough away and live in a strong enough house to have sustained no tangible damage. But since we've lived on our farm, the whole landmass has tilted and doors that used to sit level now close or open themselves. My stove in my old house was once level and now fried eggs slide to the back of the pan. We have since built a new house next to our old one, and that was laser levelled but then the Kaikoura quake happened (we moved into the new house the following month), and the new house now also tilts very slightly. Perhaps the Alpine fault will set it all back level again, or make things much worse. Who knows? I'm looking forward to it though. I just hope it happens while I'm still young enough to enjoy it.

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesnโt accord with the facts.

A day after a massive earthquake near Alaska sparked tsunami alerts for the U.S. West Coast, a magnitude 6.2 quake was reported early Wednesday off the coast of Japan, officials said. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake hit at 9:50 p.m. local time about 64 miles northeast of the island of Honshu, at a depth of about 24 miles. The temblor on Wednesday was much deeper and weaker than the one off the coast of Alaska. No tsunami watches or warnings were issued from the Japan quake, and there were no immediate reports of injuries. The location of Wednesday's 6.2 magnitude earthquake off the coast of Japan. (USGS) 'RING OF FIRE' FURY STRIKES ALASKA, PHILIPPINES, JAPAN It was just the latest spark of activity this week along the volatile "Ring of Fire" seismic fault system. More than half the world's active volcanoes located above ground are in this ring, according to the USGS. A map showing the "Ring of Fire," where more than half of the world's active volcanoes above sea level encircle the Pacific Ocean. (USGS) The region is the location of most of Earth's subduction zones, where oceanic plates slide under the lighter continental plates. Earthquakes tend to happen when those plates scrape or subside underneath each other, and, when that happens at sea, it can spawn tsunamis So far this week, activity in the area has included volcanic eruptions in Japan and the Phillipines, and Tuesday's earthquake off the coast of Alaska. |
