Typhoid outbreak declared in Kudat
Monday, 25 Feb 2019 KUDAT: A typhoid fever outbreak has been declared in the district after five people were confirmed to have contracted the illness. District health officer Dr Omar Kwang Kugan said the cases were confirmed by the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s pathology department. A circular from the district Health Department has gone viral on social media after the cases were confirmed by the hospital. Dr Omar said the hospital has been on alert for the disease since Thursday. He said an operation centre was activated the following day to deal with the outbreak. Kudat district officer Sapdin Ibrahim meanwhile said the situation was still under control. “The district office will raise the awareness on the outbreak,” he said adding that the outbreak was brought in by those coming in from the Philippines. Typhoid is a bacterial infection that can lead to a high fever, diarrhea, and vomiting. It can be fatal. The infection is often passed on through contaminated food and drinking water.
