There is a fire centered in Wuhan. A viral fire. And embers from this fire are drifting all over the world. Each one has the potential to ignite new fires. I have seen variants of the analogy "drifting embers" used to describe the risk posed by carriers of Wuhan virus by several commentators. I think it is apt. It is clear by now that Wuhan virus will cause a pandemic. Indeed, it really already has. Sustained human to human transmission has occurred in China. Not just in Wuhan, but in multiple provinces. Human to human transmission has occurred in multiple other countries. The only question now is how long it lasts. China will have a hard time stamping it out. But other countries still have a chance to avoid the disaster that is befalling China, if they act fast. To the best of my knowledge, every single instance of Wuhan virus in countries outside of China has been due to air travel from China to those countries. Had air travel between China and those countries been stopped, these cases would not have happened, outside of China. There is a simple way to stop this pandemic. Ban travel from China to the rest of the world. Now, I know I will hear that studies have proved that this will not work. That is not true. To my knowledge, none of these studies assume a complete travel ban. They give various percentages for how effective travel restrictions are. But they never pick 100%. Why? We do have the ability to absolutely prevent more Wuhan virus cases from being imported into North America. We simply ban travel from China, or other countries where the virus may become established, to countries in North America. Note, I mean all travel. Not 90% of travel. Not 99% of the travel. Not 99.9% of the travel. 100% of travel. American citizens wishing to return should be screened and agree to self-quarantine for 2 weeks. This is not a big ask to protect our country. In 2014, candidate for President, Trump tweeted this: “Stop the EBOLA patients from entering the U.S. Treat them, at the highest level, over there. THE UNITED STATES HAS ENOUGH PROBLEMS!” The Trump administration has instituted travel bans on residents from a number of countries because he believes they pose a risk to the US. Mr. President, I ask you this question. Why no travel ban for China? There is a clear and present danger to our country. It is your responsibility to protect this country from that danger. And there is exactly one way to do this. Ban travel from China to the US. Now. |

It's too late now. The horse has already bolted.
I agree with you that a complete travel ban would be required but that should have happened 3 weeks ago and included all ships. Of course no politician will ever agree to that as it would be political and economic suicide. We are all driven by money. |

Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

I completely agree with you... 100% travel ban at least until it's no longer spreading in other countries
