Last week, the percentage of participants who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Infection Radar survey increased slightly (from 2.0% to 2.2%)* compared to the week before that. The daily average number of hospital admissions of patients with SARS-CoV-2 last week also increased slightly compared to the week before that (daily average admissions went from 97 to 102).** There were an average of 500 patients with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital last week; this is comparable to the week before that (average of 505 patients). Recently, an upward trend has been observed in COVID-19 figures: viral load in sewage, percentage of Infection Radar survey participants with a positive test result, and hospital admissions. This is consistent with the seasonal period in which respiratory infections caused by various viruses are more likely to be circulating. just trying to see how copying info works... 7 December 2023 | 16:00 Weekly update on the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2: 6 December 2023Starting on 6 December 2023, this update will be published weekly at 16:00 instead of 15:00. Spread of the virus and admissionsIn week 48 (27 November – 3 December 2023), sewage surveillance showed that the national average viral load increased (+23%) compared to the week before. Last week, the percentage of participants who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Infection Radar survey increased slightly (from 2.2% to 2.4%)* compared to the week before that. Hospital admissions of patients with SARS-CoV-2 last week also increased slightly compared to the week before that (daily average admissions went from 102 to 108).** There were an average of 541 patients with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital last week; this is comparable to the week before that (average of 522 patients). The average number of hospital admissions remained stable in recent weeks. However, the figures for the past few days show an increase in hospital admissions (source: LCPS). This is not yet reflected in this weekly update. In the period from 9 October to 20 November 2023, people over 60 who received a COVID-19 vaccination this autumn had a 77% lower risk of hospital admission due to COVID-19 compared to people who had been vaccinated previously, but had not (yet) received this repeat vaccination. [url]https://www.rivm.nl/en/coronavirus-covid-19/current/variants[/url] or https://www.rivm.nl/en/coronavirus-covid-19/current/variants ; Current situation: BA.2.86 sub-variants are most prevalent in the NetherlandsSince early 2022, most of the variants of SARS-CoV-2 circulating in the Netherlands have been in the Omicron lineage: sub-variants BA.1 through BA.5. Mutations are still emerging within these sub-variants. There are also recombinant strains that combine characteristics of other variants, such as the XBB variants, (including XBB.1.5, XBB.1.9, XBB.1.16 and EG.5). The same pattern is occurring in other countries as well. Multiple sub-variants of BA.2 and BA.5 are currently circulating in the Netherlands. From BA.2, for example, we are seeing sub-variant BA.2.75 (including CH.1.1). Sub-variants of BA.5 include BF.7 and BQ.1 (including BQ.1.1). There are also recombinant strains that combine characteristics of other variants, such as the XBB variants (including XBB.1.5, XBB.1.9, XBB.1.16 and EG.5). From week 7 to week 45 of 2023, EG.5 was responsible for the highest number of infections in the Netherlands. EG.5 is an XBB.1.9 sub-variant that was recently designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a ‘Variant of Interest’ (VOI), due to possible changes in characteristics compared to previous variants. Since week 46, the most common variant seen in pathogen surveillance is BA.2.86, a BA.2 sub-variant which has also been designated as a VOI by the WHO. This variant shows many genetic differences compared to the other variants currently circulating internationally, and is therefore being closely monitored worldwide. At this time, there are no indications that these sub-variants would be more likely to cause severe illness compared to previous Omicron sub-variants. The trends seen in sewage generally correspond to the trends observed in pathogen surveillance. The main variant currently observed is BA.2.86, and various XBB variants are still being found. |

- - We have an unprecedented situation in the Netherlands. JN.1 is probably taking over this week, which is expected to boost cases. But at the same time sewage concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 are already climbing and near an all time high. Hospital admissions of patients with SARS-CoV-2 last week also increased slightly compared to the week before that (daily average admissions went from 143 to 163).** There were an average of 881 patients with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital last week; this is higher than the week before that (average of 686 patients). DJ, both CoViD and Flu statistics for NL are "high" however healthcare -so far- not in any form of crisis (yet) here in NL. Very likely there must be a lot of "co-spread/co-infection" of both CoViD and Flu...Limited testing may see "flu" while in fact a person may have CoViD... Recently I hardly see any stories on CoViD in non-human hosts...maybe I miss them ? Last week, the percentage of participants who tested positive for COVID-19 in the Infection Radar survey decreased (from 3.4% to 2.6%)* compared to the week before that. Hospital admissions of patients with SARS-CoV-2 last week also decreased slightly compared to the week before that (daily average admissions went from 165 to 141).** There were an average of 784 patients with SARS-CoV-2 in hospital last week; this is lower than the week before that (average of 856 patients). Due to the holidays, less complete data can be provided on sewage surveillance, the Infection Radar survey and hospital admissions. However, there has been a visible decrease in average viral load, Infection Radar survey results and hospital admissions in the last week of 2023. Besides SARS-CoV-2, other viruses and bacteria are also causing respiratory infections. DJ, lots of data was NOT reported ...we may have THREE mass spread events...christmas, new year and schools/workplaces reopening monday january 8...all 1 week apart... I love to see a reason for optimism...The RIVM site showed the decrease of sewage viral load may be based on data not being reported....However 22/23 season also did see a "peak" for sewage in week 51... DJ-Are we supposed to believe this is a new normal ? This is where we should be ? |
