Initial testing on bird flu vaccine prove disappointing

WAVY-TV

WASHINGTON New worries over a vaccine to protect against bird flu.

A top government medical expert acknowledges "we have a long way to go" after the first tests on bird flu inoculations proved only modestly effective.

The government hinted last summer that the vaccine had flaws when it began stockpiling 162 (m) million dollars worth of shots. The test results published today in "The New England Journal of Medicine" suggest health watchdogs are right to worry about brewing a better vaccine.

In early tests, little more than half the people who were given two mega-dose shots actually wound up with some apparent protection against the potentially deadly strain.

Researchers say they're still working to see whether adding certain chemicals to the shots might boost their power.

Yeah and somebody will make money digging graves if the pandemic hit. So what?

Btw..Roche announced yesterday, after it invited in over a dozen other companies to help out with Tamiflu production, that the orders governments said they were going to place are not coming in, it can meet demand and if orders do not match capacity may have to scale back production eventually.
