First of all. thanks to the owner(s), moderators, sponsors and all the warm hearted, like minded, knowledgeable and questioning members of this site!Clap

I've read here about 'nuking' rice prior to storage. What other bulk items are suitable and for how long? I plan on vacuum packing individual meals/servings for storage.

BTW, I would like to second zoe17's recommendation on the Mountain House Group Buys here: http://warrifles.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21106 ! I spent over $500 on the last buy and will spend that much again on the next one!

You can nuke any dry goods. Beans, flour, sugar, rice, grains etc. A lot easier and faster than freezing, IMO. My freezer is not that big, so that doesn't really work for me.

Do not forget the food grade Diatomaceous earth in your rice supply. About a cup per bag will make the stuff storable for a LONG time because it'll kill all the bugs that want to partake of your supplies. Best part about it is that it'll even kill the bugs that try and eat your poop, like flies, but is totally harmless to you.

 ... that'd be a cup DE per 50 lb bag, right ...

I also have limited freezer space.  Could you tell me how long you nuke the dry goods?

I just put my dry good into a relatively shallow bowl and nuke for three minutes, stick my finger in to make sure the center is hot. If it's hot, you're done, if not - keep going.

I looked into the DE treatment. I read that you should insure that it is mixed well enough to coat each grain. That's a lot of mixing! Plus DE would require opening the packages/containers. This is why 'nukin' looked to be the best pre-storage procedure.

I have had great success using Diatomaceous earth, I prepped heavily for Y2k and used this in all of my dry goods except sugar.  When I started prepping for bird flu my intention was to go thur my old supplies and throw the stuff out that wasn't any good.  I just about fell over when the stuff I had stored with the DE was still good.  Once you get started mixing your dry good it's not so bad and can be fun if you get the family involved.  What if you acquire more staples that needs to be stored for long term and we have no electricity.  It's always good to have some on hand.

I have used food grade DE for many things...even watered plants to get rid of those darn flying gnats that drive you nuts. I wonder if perhaps DE doesn't have even more value...since it does kill many bugs  and is so tiny, I think I remember reading somewhere it can be used for human parasites and euuuuuuuuuuuuuuu worms....think there is value to perhaps even taking a bit with some liquid when BF hits? Never thought of it till I read these posts....

DE sounds like a very good approach.  Can anyone tell me where to buy this stuff?

Microwave also sounds good.  Is each batch limited to =/- 2 cups?

How long do you nuke rice etc for and on what power?  Doesn't it make beans go hard as they do when old?  How does it affect other foods.  I'd really like to know as I have no room in my freezer and it would take forever to empty it to freeze my preps.  Beth
