I started catchng a cold two weeks ago. I thought it would be a great opportunity to practice some BF cleanliness procedures but without masks or gloves. Let me tell you, it is NOT easy!

Instead of mentally 'walking' through the procedures, actually do 'em for 24 hours. Put a rubber band across your palm/back of hand to remind yourself of the exercise. Why the palm? I've tried it on my wrist but would get use to it and forget it was there. With the rubber band across the palm it is 'there' whenever you wash your hands, blow your nose, etc.

I was quite surprised with:

...the amount of paper products used.

...how often I went to my eyes, nose and mouth.

...how many objects can be contaminated.

...the amount of water used to decontaminate.

Wearing a mask and gloves would require additional concentration to properly remove and dispose of without self and environmental contamination!

So just as with firearms, survival tools/appliances, recipes, etc, your procedures should be

Practiced, practiced, PRACTICED!!!

this is a great topic. Did you by any chance track how much of each item you used? Paper-towels, disinfectant, gloves? It is so hard to estimate how much you will need in a pandemic for things like this. I'm trying to have six months of preps.

Practice makes perfect. I'm planning a practice session where I am totally bedridden for an upcoming weekend.

I will remain in bed the whole time. To simulate severe flu symptoms I will alternate between roaring drunkenness and terrible hangover. My bride will wait on me hand and foot to apply caregiver methods. . .

I have yet to schedule this and will report back once this exercise has been completed.

[slapping forehead] Unfortunately I did not. [/slapping forehead]

All I know is that I was constantly washing my hands with either antibacterial soap and water or the waterless disinfectant (WD99%). In a SHTF scenerio I would use the WD to save on water and towels.

Bath/hand towels and my clothing was washed together. I did not take any other contamination precautions, such as bagging. In a quarentine mode that would have to be addressed.

I had a seperate trash bucket lined with a pull-top closure plastic bag for the any waste that wasn't flushable. Mostly I used TP for blowning my nose, softer you know, that took the sewer system tour.

Guessing, I would say I went through a roll of TP and less than a quarter of a 8 oz hand sanitizer in 24 hours.

I'm warning ya'll: It's tedious!

Question I have been pondering is that when it's time to get rid of the trash (now considered a bio-hazard)  what's the best way to dispose of it ... to burn/incinerate it?

I did some poking around here and couldn't find anything besides 'burn or bury'.

I wonder if you put a bit of bleach disinfecting solution in a plastic bag if that would suffice for contaminated solid waste. Bleach in the bottom, half fill bag with waste. Seal bag, remove. Dump outside, let dry. Then burn. Long process but you can't be too careful.

Any other ideas out there?

And, on top of THAT, then you would have to make sure that the disposal container is operable without human hand touching it. Because, person blows nose, disposes of kleenex and then washes hands in that order. So, if a person were to have to touch the container area in order to dispose of the kleenex, then that area becomes contaminated.

Am I over-analyzing or does this make sense to anyone??

Sam,

Good catch with the garbage bag squeezing. Mask or no mask, you don't want a concentrated "plume" engulfing you. . .

I see two different scenarios with your concerns . . .

One, you have a sick patient. . . They should be isolated if possible . . . The WHOLE room should be considered contaminated. The patient is going to be grabbing the kleenex box (if they have the strength) and dropping them into (or close to) the garbage can next to the bed. Treat everything in the room that goes out as bad stuff. My thought of adding water / bleach solution is to reduce airborne when you do close by making everything wet and  as an added extra, disinfecting stuff too.

Number two, Is the non infected house or the non infected area of an infected house. . . Have multiple "Snot Stations" (Copyright pending) where you have a box of kleenex, a lined garbage can and a bottle of hand sanitizer. If no one has symptoms, consider this to be, well. . . dirty kleenex. When you empty the trash, stay out of the "plume" just in case.

Gilmore
P.S. My test weekend is currently been put on HOLD. . . (read: Honeymoon OVER)
