we had an extended power outage here several years ago, what amazed me most was my reaction to it--- lost.  all we did was focus on when things would get back to normal. it was an obsession. our  nerves were frayed and we were all pretty depressed. i do not know if was lack of control or lack of struture, or what.  we had many basic conviences, so food, heat etc - not an issue.  i do know that if bf comes and we need to isolate ourseves, people are going to get mighty strange.they say that kids thrive on struture, i think we all do,  so  i have added to my plan a schedule of daily activities to help me gain some control.  if anyone has any ideas regarding long hours to fill- please let me know

Go to the craft store. Buy some yarn, some crochet or knitting needles and learn to make afgan blankets. :) Its fun, constructive, relaxing, and takes a LONG time to do. There is actually a good booklet for about $5 called "Mile-a-minute Afgans" which is excellent for beginners. Other arts and crafts are fun too and many are not very expensive. You can get a ton of water color supplies for just a few dollars.

There are also many other things to do, board games, cards, monopoly (thats one that can go on forever!), etc...

You can also pick up some used school textbooks for a few dollars to set aside some learning time for children. A fun project for children also is creative writing. Everyone can take some time to make up a story, and then take turns telling stories to entertain each other.

It may be prudent to get some kind of exercise equipment (treadmill or indoor bicycle) and have everyone spend 30 minutes a day on that. It will make a big difference to everyone when they start to feel cooped up. And excersize is a great way to reduce stress and get a sense of general well-being. Right now is an excellent time to find used exercise equipment in the classified ads, you can probaby get something nice for about $50. Many people purchase these items new for Christmas and for their New Years Resolutions and are now deciding that they are not as motivated as they thought they would be...

Oh, nerf toys. Lots of nerf toys. They even make an indoor basket ball hoop you can hang on the door and the balls are soft enough to not damage anything indoors.

Ok, can you tell I am a mom? LOL! There just arent enough hours in the day...

Justme, that knitting is a fantastic idea.  My grandmother made an afghan for each grandchild even though her eyesight was starting to fail.  Since I was one of the youngest, I got an afghan made of what was left in her yard bin.  It's a strange sight of pink, purple and green but I still love to nap with it.  Even though it seems repetitive, people must still enjoy it because Louisville just had it annual Chicks With Sticks meeting and the whole Galleria was filled with knitters.  This would be an excellent opportunity to be productive especially if cooped up without television.  You have stoked my interest know in crocheting (not sure how to spell it) as a potential activity in case this insiduous bird flu does start up.

Halogen, I WON'T EVEN tell y'all what I saw in my mind's eye when I read "Chicks with Sticks"!

I too, have several crochet baby blanket/child afghan projects in various stages of planning and completion & am gathering inspiration and supplies for several quilts to work on if I find myself unemployed due to a pandemic.  My soon to be here grandson will have plenty to keep him snug even though it doesn't get that cold here.

When the power went out here we got out books and read them.  Then we played games such as monopoly and trivial pursuit. We also got a few card games to play.  I got a lot of model airplanes to build and paint.  I have around 100 models to build. We willl survive and we will do well in life.

We will also have lots of cheap novels to read.  We will take lots of puzzles and games with us. The thing that we have is lots of books to read. I have a library of over 500 books to read. I also have a lot of shortwave radios. we dont need to worry much about that. I can take my library with me too.

Might not suit everybody, but in additional to plenty of books, I've amassed about 8000 hours of  old time radio shows in mp3 format on cds.  With a portable Cd player and headphones, I can escape from the monotony of being holed up.  (I have solar panals to recharge my batteries).

OTR shows can be download for free off the net, or purchased already on cds.

I'm also talking my immediate neighbors into getting Family Service Radio walkie-talkies. We'll set up a daily (or twice daily) radio net, to keep in touch, and issue alerts, or calls for assistance.

Other than that, I intend to re-learn how to play the guitar and will try to keep a poker game going 12 hours a day.
