Just a heads up. I just bought all 12 of the Foxfire books as recommended here. They are nice to read and a very interesting and wonderful piece of Americana. They also would be good if you were plopped down in the middle of some remote or wooded area with nothing but your wits and the books. You could build a house, butcher a hog, make a spinning wheel or even your own shoes. Directions for all these things are included. But for regular city dweller's or people in a suburb with just a small backyard and a couple of trees on their property, these books wouldn't be of much help in my opinion.
I was interested in home remedies in case medical help isn't available. Advice like, and I quote, "Take a mole's foot (his left front paw) and tie that around the baby's neck and you won't hear a sound out of it," for teething pain isn't exactly what I had in mind. Some of the remedies sound do-able though.
I bought them all used from Amazon and still paid $120 for all 12. They are fun to read although the author is a bit wordy in places. Just not worth the money to me as far as survival is concerned. I'm hoping to re-sell them. Anyway, many people seem to like them but I'm just giving an opposing viewpoint as I'd hate to see people waste their money.

Thanks Sam. I do have Crisis Preparedness by Jack A. Spigarelli and the bird flu book by Dr. Woodson. I haven't looked at the first in depth yet but I am very pleased with the bird flu book and the other one looks good from skimming it. I know the bird flu one is on the internet free now (but of course, after I bought it! ) but I'd rather have the book and it was only $5. Yep, I think the moles will be happy. They just got lucky.
