I'm trying to determine the best way to vac seal sleeves of saltines without crushing 'em. I want to eliminate the most air possible, so round mailing tubes are out. I even found a source of 2" square plastic tubing. But that would co$t about $.75 a sleeve. My next try will be cardboard cut to fold into a square.
I wish I could find the ol' tins!
BTW, I'm talking about saltines; not wafers, biscuits, Town House or Ritz. I LOVE saltines.

Tupperware has saltine keepers and I searched and found containers for single sleeves at http://www.thehomemarketplace.com/product_detail.aspx?item_no=MCCC&position=5&cid=5154&sort= Very reasonably priced too - Ebay has many of the vintage Saltine tins. |

I leave mine in original sleeves, then put in Ziplock bags, and then put them in my cold storage room. I open a sleeve here and there, and have yet to find a soggy one...I have some over a year old that are as good as new. Now, it seems to me, and Im just shooting from the hip here, but if you get a stale cracker, you could just bake it a few minutes, or throw it in a hot pan, a few minutes. I guess that's what I'd try. Otherwise, stale crackers can be used for thicken soups and sauces, they can be left out to dry with old bread and be made in to stuffing......(when I say stale, Im refering to when they lose that crunch we all love...) Just a thought, nawty |

One thing to remember, there are levels of vacuum pressure. If you just remove enough air to tighten the bag against the food, it already has a vacuum. And also, the sleeves will need a hole in them to remove the air from inside the sleeve.

That's my fallback method. I did the same for a batch of dried bananas. Worked out fine.

Saltines last quite a while...
I'd try putting them (loose) in a gallon freezer ziploc bag, sealing the bag almost all of the way, and sucking the air out of the bag with my mouth....then, seal the bag. Of course, you COULD always just use a regular vacuum sealer... If you want an added level of security, putting a silica gel moisture absorber or two in the bag wouldn't hurt. If you REALLY want to make it work, try Broadsword's MountainHouse group buys...they sell #10 cans of nitrogen flushed "pilot crackers". |

I inquired 'bout pilot crackers when I placed my last order with BS & DJ. I was told they are more like a town house cracker. I WANT MY SALTINES! Besides I already have my current order in with them so I'd have to wait until the next group buy.
I did vac pack 12 sleeves last week. I sure hope they survive!

You might want to consider just MAKING your crackers. Its very easy, fun, and gives you, and the kids (if applicable), something to do in a lockdown situation. Pretzels are fun too. A coleman camp oven works great and it takes a very short time to make a sheet of crackers.

Tilia (foodsaver folks) make a vac. sealable container in a variety of shapes. Both Walmart and Target carry them. You could transfer the sleeve of saltines into the container (you'd have to unwrap it first) and then vac. seal it.

I bought the last tin of Sky flakes at my grocery store, they said they had a run on them , interesting because they are twice the price of crackers.
I wonder if they are on alot of peoples preps |

I opened my cardboard boxes of saltines, and cut a small slit into the top of each sleeve. Then I closed the box back up and put in a vacuum seal bag. I vacuumed until the sides of the box began to suck in, then I stopped the vac and sealed. I think it will work nicely!
BTW, before now I never even realized saltines expired. I've eaten some from my cupboard that were probably 2 years old and never noticed a problem.
