I have seen a few articles on bird flu in Antartica and wondering why that was such a big deal. Seems like it was only a mater of team so why the fuss? I have read the articles, so just looking for peoples opinions or take on this. thanks! |

H5N1 has been moving towards Antarctica the last months...so for that matter it is "no news"...it is a major risks for penguins...may be "the end" of some species... Related https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGkJSEOd1R4 or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eGkJSEOd1R4 ; For decades, Antarctic sea ice trends seemed to defy climate change, until…they didn’t. In just two years, Antarctica lost as much sea ice as the Arctic lost in three decades. Statistics say that the record low sea ice in 2023 was a 1 in 700 BILLION year event, suggesting that the models in this case may be broken, or that this anomaly was caused by climate change. And a new study asked the question: does this represent a STATE CHANGE? And what would that mean for one of our most iconic species, the emperor penguin? And what does reduced sea ice mean for Thwaites, the Doomsday Glacier? With summer sea ice hitting the third-lowest extent in recorded history, it's time to check-in. Watch this episode to find out. DJ, warm ocean water is melting sea-ice from under the ice...warm air from the top both land and sea-ice...Sea-ice is also keeping glaciers flow into the ocean at limited speed-so less sea-ice (+ more warmth) may speed up glacier-flow... The "ice-crisis" in polar regions may endanger penguins, icebears etc because food for them may be on other places...ice-bears need icebergs to rest upon...They often swim to catch food... Food crisis is increasing disease risks...H5N1 in penguis, mammals is hardly tested...for that matter we also may only see "the tip of the iceberg"... |
