My wife does not take prepping seriously.
Is there any alternative to stocking up on tampons?
They seem pretty simply in construction. Has anyone tried making them?

Look at the post on Diva Cups. This is a great alternative to tampons.
If you just do a search on Diva Cups you will see what I am talking about. She may want to use this now instead of tampons. On the posting many of the women say they really like it. I am too old for this stuff now but if I need to still use tampons I would use the Diva Cup instead. In the old days women use to place rags in their underware as pads. Then came the machine made pads then tampons. I do not believe it would be good to try and make "homemade" tampons but homemade pads would work. Hope this helps! |

I think if I used tampons I would just stock the tampons, it might be too dangerous to try to "make your own" with toxic shock syndrome or other infections if a small piece was left in or something. Maybe you could just check and see what type she uses and stock them for her or use the suggestions FluMom has, which are both good alternatives if you do not want to actually stock the items on hand.

I actually "roll my own". I also have a diva cup, but it leaks and I don't care for that. I buy 100% cotton shop towels and wash & dry them. I cut into strips about 2" wide and 6" long. I roll them tight and use embroidery thread to tie and leave 4" of string as a pull. I've done this for over a year now and have been very pleased with the results and super low cost. I don't leave my homemade tampons in too long (over 6 hours) as this is part of the problem (as I understand it) with toxic shock syndrome. This is unusual info to share with strangers, I hope it helps other ladies out there.
best regards. |

Please everyone, be very careful with this. I lost my sister to toxic shock 14 years ago when she was 32 and she left behind 3 children, ages 9, 11 and 13. She thought she had the flu and 10 days later she was gone. It is nothing to mess with. By the time they diagnos , it is usually too late. Due to the lack of medical people that may be available during a pandemic and the need to avoid hospitals anyway, I think I would opt for the bulky pads in exchange for my life.

Do a Google search for natural sponges (NS), NOT synthetic.
Many months ago I posted a thread about using NS as sanitary napkins. Can't find it now... |

You could try and get some Tampon coupons, and look for them on sale. Get them cheaper that way. Watch your Sunday papers for coupons, or look on http://www.thecouponclippers.com and order multiples for a fee. It is worth it in the end. Some people think it's crazy to pay for coupons, but when you have many of the same, and use them in a sale, you save hundreds of dollars, so it is all worth the fee. That is how I got $1,000 worth of groceries a month, for about $100-$150. You can get many of the same coupon, for something you're wanting to stock up on. When you get your coupons, watch the Sunday circulars, and see if you can find any on sale, to make for a better deal, with your coupon discount. If there's no sale, just find the cheapest store, and use them there. It would be easy to get enough for a year. That's my Coupon 101 ~ Tip of the day. lol
It is a creative idea, to make your own, as long as the user is "extra" careful with them. I am very paranoid about watching the clock, when I am using a tampon. That sounds pitiful, I know, but my mom was a big one about TSS, and pounding it's dangers in my head.If you choose to do this, use extreme caution.
Alternately, if you can sew or know anyone that can, it has become the new "in" thing for some, to make your own pantyliners and/or pads. They don't take very much material, and are washable.
This is the pattern many people are using. I love to sew, and have printed this off, but haven't made it yet. A
lot of girls on the sewing boards make and use these, though, and they love them.

I can understand the fear in using NATURAL SPONGES, but dang it, do your research!!!
Google can be your friend... Why is it that folk want an easy, immediate and, to them, an acceptable answer. Just do your own research. Sure you can spend $$$ for a year supply of 'napkins' (that's a lot of other supplies ya'll miss out on) ... You can sew your own 'napkins' (hope ya have the expansive water supply and detergents/cleansers required for sanitation)... You can wring your hands and pace the floor 'cause ya don't get the simple solution you seek... I don't post BS here. If you're concerned about feminine hygiene and need guidance and ya don't listen to those who are here to enlighten, then go use Google, your county health services (be prepared for some scorn), your family doc, etc. But please do not 'toss out' suggestions because they don't match your life experiences. When a local catastrophe hits, don't count on anyone except yourself, family and close friends.to be of aid. I would think that anyone that has concerns and are over the age of 16 can appreciate that the government will be the last assistance you'll get, if any at all! Sorry to be so curt and blunt, but when the SHTF, ya won't have the internet, available local store supplies, full medical services, etc. It will waaay too late. So PLEASE, if you're truly concerned, do your own research! The info is out there for you... |
