New swine flu trends: Prolonged ventilation, fatigue, weakness
Ankur Tewari,TNN | Mar 16, 2015, 09.17 PM IST

AHMEDABAD: With the city emerging as swine flu epicenter in the country, doctors treating the patients are now perplexed with new patterns that are emerging every day. Patients who have been treated report extreme fatigue and feebleness even after the recovery. Doctors said this kind of feedback was not seen last year.

"Since January 1, we have admitted 199 patients, of which, 140 were tested positive for H1N1. Surprisingly, most of the patients complained of extreme sluggishness and weakness even weeks after being discharged from the hospital. This is the new trend I have seen for the first time," said Dr Jai Kothari, consultant, critical care at Apollo Hospital in Gandhinagar.

Dr Kothari said even the recovery span is more it is taking almost a fortnight to recover from cough and nasal congestion. "Until 2014, cases of secondary infection like bacterial and viral used to be less. But this time, numbers have drastically increased."

He said it is being noticed that patients have a longer stay in quarantine wards this year and most of them have to be put on prolonged ventilation.

Another senior consultant physician Dr Manoj Vithlani echoes Dr Kothari's views. "Cough and other respiratory problems are common symptoms of swine flu, but the number of patients developing such complications has certainly risen this time."

He said other side-effects of a drug used to treat swine flu symptoms, include breathlessness; swelling on face, lips, tongue, and throat; hallucination and blistering. Dr Vithlani said patients are also complaining of prolonged mouth blisters this year.
