April 4, 2009 - the illusive tracking of bird flu in countries who will not report it.

Cianjur, West Java ::: Outbreak in chickens. One human suspect found.

Cianjur, West Java – Livestock, Fishery and Marine Service Kabupaten Cianjur affirmed the cause of fowls death in four districts was bird flu virus.

At least 132 native chickens found suddenly died lately in Kecamatan Mande, Sukaluyu, Cilaku, and Campaka. Twelve of them tested positive bird flu virus by rapid test. One human suspect, Ade (50), Kampung Cikeukeup, Desa Cidadap, Kecamatan Campaka was also reported to having bird flu symptoms. This suggestion made according to report of participatory disease surveillance and response (PDSR).

Head of Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health, Livestock, Fishery and Marine service, Kabupaten Cianjur, Ir Ardiyanto Wahidin mentioned that chickens were dead due to bird flu virus; 76 chickens in Kampung Cidamar, Desa Bobojong, Kecamatan Mande; 26 chickens in Kampung Cikeukeup RT 06/09, Desa Cidadap, Kecamatan Campaka, 23 chickens in Kampung Babakan Kamiran, Desa Selajambe, Kecamatan Sukaluyu; and 7 chickens in Kampung Rahong, Desa Munjul, Kecamatan Cilaku (7 ekor).

“Twelve chickens were tested positive and two chickens remained negative”, he said. He also confirmed that a resident of Kampung Cikeukeup was indicated to have AI inefection. The victim is now treated at one hospital in Sukabumi.

“He has bird flu symptoms, but we can’t be sure. He’s still under examination”, he added. Officials burned and buried the dead chickens to prevent further spreading.

Actually more people were probably hit by lightning, or meteors. Many times have posted concerning the real Pandemics - TB, Malaria, and Dengue Fever. The death toll from these and even the common flu is considerable.

It is the potential of a worldwide Pandemic- perhaps a fusion of H7N2 and H1N1- which could give us mortality rates up to 100% in some areas, and frequently 83% in Indonesia which often is close to Ebola in Zaire.

I always enjoy the dialogs. It is what makes the site interesting. Yet the logic for there even being an Avian Flu Talk site IMHO is for one- many diseases you cannot prepare for or calamities. Avian we can. We are currently working on several types of vaccines, ways to build communities during a Pandemic, and preserve the Infrastructure and our way of life.

None of the others are a true threat to globally kill 63% of those who catch certain diseases or engage in bungee jumping. High- yea a bit- but not like 83% in Indonesia who die when they catch H5N1.

One of the reasons for tracking Indonesia is because it is endemic in the bird population. Most of the 200,000,000 birds have it. Because birds are such an essential part of the economy as well as survival of the people in Indonesia, it not only threatens their health, it could subject them to starvation and abject poverty even worse than some are now in.

Based on human misery probably tobacco and alcohol could generate some pretty heavy statistics.

Since Indonesia stopped reporting cases, or are only a small representation of the real death toll, we would like to see Pandemic coming before it hits the main stream media. By then it will be too late to prepare at all.

"To every thing there is a season and a time to every purpose under heaven."
Ecclesiastes 3:1

And now is the time to prepare for the Avian Pandemic which is coming, and one way to do so is note and post on deaths in Indonesia. A truly devastating Avian epidemic has the potential to destroy society as we know it, kill millions - millions of people - and leave us vulnerable to attack from foreign nations.

In the time it took to post that, probably many people died from cancer from smoking, killed innocent familes from driving while drunk.  We can't stop people selling and buying and smoking cigarettes. We cannot end the misery of famlies with alcoholics and drunk drivers.

We can however save million of lives by storing food, becoming informed on Avian Flu, and most of all form a strong and solid community of people who care about each other as well as the topics we discuss.

That is what makes AFT... AFT.

INDODESIA - AVIAN

March 31st, 2009

date on page does not coincide with original text when searched... nonetheless- the data remains significant. Original search done with a search exclusion of 2008, 2007, 2005, 2004 to be sure older pages were not listed. M.C.

“The human mortality rate from bird flu in Indonesia is the highest in the world,” said Dr. Joseph Domenech, the agency’s chief veterinary officer, “and there will be more human cases if we do not focus more on containing the disease at its source in animals.

Indonesia has confirmed 129 cases of H5N1 flu, of which 105 were fatal, according to the World Health Organization. The only other countries reporting human cases thus far this year are China, Egypt and Vietnam.

comment: approx 81% CFR

Health authorities are also worried, however, about poultry outbreaks in Bangladesh and India. This month, Bangladesh reported culling at more than 400 farms. Across the border in the West Bengal state of India, the government claimed to have wiped out its outbreak, then found new cases. Since the disease was found in crows, it presumably crosses borders there easily.

Dr. Domenech also noted that new H5N1 strains were evolving in Indonesia, possibly rendering current poultry vaccines useless. In Egypt, newly emerging strains found even in vaccinated flocks suggest that bad vaccine matches are speeding mutations.
