question.... went on in mexico for a month before you guys even knew about it....restat your question...why hasn't there been a change in a phase...they need to knpw how efficient and sustained it is ...working on it....we are preparing....actively working.....who dosen't change our very forward efforts...we are looking at the isolate and preparing for vaccine (if needed)
Helen Branswell.... question. not convinced it is on the radar....is the message out..yet?
ans we are in close communication with top levels....we have gotton the message to the leadership....severe.... but have to put it in perspective for peoples everyday lives....
any testing CDC has done...is there something else out there...
ans.... severe disease is happening in Mexico....mild disese in US looking for severe disease here in the US...we are challenged because there are so many types of Resp. disease. Why does it look diff in the 2 locacitions....too early to determin and rate alert...
next WSJ...
ques
non suspect cases? how widely has it spread?
ans
we have a number of investigations going on...it takes time to confirm them...impossible to give number of cases under investigation.... this is widespread can't contain the spread....
containment isn't feasable...as it isn't with seasonal flu. So far cases in US have been mild. (not in Mexico)
next ques
person who traveled to mexico
poss. cases in Mexacali across from san diago... ?
ans
ask san diego county....many traveling to and from Mexico in that area
efforts are just getting organized ...for surveillance....we expect to find more cases throughout the country
CNN
ques
Why is it more virulent in Mexico?
Has Pres been briefed?
Is it like reg flu?
ans
more virulent in mexico? Can;'t speculate....exploring and evaluating...
on spread.... we are looking in more detail on the transmission properties...public health is working with leadership to inform (state and local)
BBC
ques
any more info on NY students?
ans
actively investigating...refere you to them....we are in contact
new person....
ques
Vaccine?
ans
we are taking initial steps...it does take months to make a vaccine.... we are preparing vaccine candidates.... we can scale up more rapidly than we used to....taking an agressive forward leaning posture.
ques
washington post...
Is the mexico outbreak ongoing???
Is it a rising or falling curve
CDC
I do not know the ans to those questions....reletively non specific....severe pneumonia....ability to link viral testing with clinical syndrome.... is ongoing...looking for increases...none yet...Mexico will tell us if things are escalating...seems ongoing at this point
ques
lab info
14 tested 7 pos.
contact members of US patients...
ans
those were pos. severe cases in mexico we are prioritizing cases from Mexico...for most urgent assessments....strains for Mexico and US are same essentially....1st rate testing going on
Labs ... doctor , clinic....rapid test....forwarded to public health labe to differentiate....can tell if untypeable....
untypeable strans go to CDC Lab
CDC gives confirmation.
........................................................
ques
testing... why did you wait til cases surfaced in the US to ask for samples from Mexico?
CdC is a WHO colaborating center...we get specimens from Mexico all the time...they share with us....
CDC hase been sharing reagents....
reagent situation...we send out reagent kits to labs...more complicated kits are sent around the wold....we now have a better test to be sent out to over 140 labs....it is a new virus and we will be sending them out
USA Today
ques
how many specimems are waiting to be tested
ans
quite a few...no not avail.
new ques
MSNBC
response effort
ans
guidence to all states....active investigations.... planning efforts ques need to be answered early....waiting for info...from Mexico...who is considering carfully.
if things get worse we will be looking at diff questions later...important findings may come from other sectors...
PRESS BRIEFING 3pm eastern time.... and another tomorrow afternoon.
please excuse typos...

the 1918 came in 3 waves, the first was not so bad, the second was a real killer and the third was just mopping up the ones it missed in the second wave.
So this being the first, if we have a repeat, should not be so bad, but come fall and the cooler weather, the second wave might be on the horizon. This is certainly the time to get all your preps in order, load up on ammunition, if you don't know how to use a gun, it's time to pay someone $50 or so and get some instructions. Prepare to be able to barricade your home. Like in a hurricane, be able to secure your windows, a piece of glass doesn't do the trick. Silver dollars are still available and will work as currency during any type of crisis, I doubt toilet paper in the form of a greenback will do the trick. Like everyone else, I hope this is all for not, however it's better to be a little prepared then not at all. |

Frankly i am surprised it has taken a bug this long to adapt, Its always been just a matter of time before one did.
I find this little artical a bit silly " U.S.Total
reaches 19 with a couple in Kansas, schoolchildren in New York City and
a person in California believed to have mild cases of swine flu. It is
not clear yet whether virus is easily transmitted"
1000+ cases in Mexico 19 or so in the USA and they are not sure if the bug is "Easily Transmitted" Mehh .. I bet these are the same type of people who would believe the earth was flat after evidence showed it wasn't. http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-sci-flu26-2009apr26,0,2116819.story |

Especially when most people have herd immunity to the 1918 strain of Avian Flu now. And today's political satire riddle is... http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7336683 How do you sell thousands of doses of Tamiflu which several strains of flu are now 100% resistant too... pause....? You infect a few people with a "new flu" which almost looks custom made which just happens to respond to Tamiflu. Then you demonstrate the foolishness of not being treated soon enough with Tamiflu in Mexico where actually still only 27 cases have been (unless the CDC official page changed) were actually confirmed- and have a few more emergent cases so EVERYONE has to take Tamiflu, thereby selling the stock that would go bad and unsold. Profound remark for today - but it can't be seasonal flu- the flu season is over. Well true, the 1918 Pandemic started in October- so in terms watching for a Pandemic seasonal flu levels are kind of a moot point. A virus can mutate and a Pandemic can begin at any time of the year.. and the fact there is less monitoring when the virus are usually mutating the most- is not exactly effective. Second most profound remark - we are really concerned this could start the next Pandemic. (none of the cases so far in the U.S. have even been fatal or showed worse symptoms than classic flu) Third remark - WHO is going to meet and discuss raising the alert level. On the basis of what- don't we need we need increased human to human to transmission. So far, they haven't even determined the source of the infection. Another- we have never seen this type of mixture before... a similar mixture was found and published in 1999 of avian, human, and swine flu together. This is not new. Most alarmist reaction to an outbreak. In 1976, President Ford had most of the population vaccinated but the epidemic never happened. Trivia question- 1,000 of people die in Mexico City from what? Levels of major air pollutants in Mexico City routinely exceed the maximum ... pollution levels lead to thousands of premature deaths a year in Mexico City. ... There are over 100000 taxisMexico City On my last visit to Mexico City while staying in Zona Rosa - the air was so bad I could hardly breath. More than five years ago people were wearing masks to work because of the bad air. here's one which she said had "pandemic potential" because it is an animal virus strain infecting people... exactly what has Avian Flu been doing for the last 5 years? Wasn't this an animal (bird) strain infecting people? current... This information is current as of 20:59 - April 25, 2009 This information is current as of today, April 25, 2009 at 20:59Updated: April 25, 2009 http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/contentSwineFluMexico.aspx CDC has confirmed that seven of 14 respiratory specimens sent to the CDC by the Mexican National Influenza Center are positive for swine influenza virus and are similar to the swine influenza viruses recently identified in the US among residents of California and Texas. CDC and state public and animal health authorities are currently investigating 8 cases of swine flu in humans in California and Texas that may be related to cases in Mexico. At this time there have been no severe illnesses or fatalities seen in the United States. Medclinician |

most of the population vaccinated but the epidemic never happened.
Maybe because Ford had everyone Vaccinated ? Maybe that is why the epidemic didn't happen. (we shall never really know) Trivia question- 1,000 of people die in Mexico City from what?" I don't know.. Who ever said 1000 people died in Mexico ? As far as i know the current number of deaths is between 50-80 in Mexico. |

Med, good to hear from you. several states do have a few cases of swine flu each year. Especially the big pig producing states. The worry is the spread...if it does spread, swine flus have an amazing ability to change quickly and .... wish they had some real facts to give out. Wonder why they mentioned a day care in the Bronx. according to one pfficial...
Before any aspect of the pandemic plan can be set in motion, one official explained, there has to be some idea how many people in Mexico are infected. Fewer than 100 deaths from pneumonia or flu-like illness in a city of 20 million is not very many.
