Does anyone know how to go about purchasing IV supplies? Can I purchase them without prescription? Also, should I get a nebulizer? Thanks.

No on the nebulizer -it spreads the virus big time. As for IV supplies no you cant get them without a Rx. You wouldnt want to try an IV anyway. You could cause more harm than good  to many things could go wrong - you wouldnt want to try and help one of your children and end up hurting them.

Oh BTW welcome

Janetn is right, hon.  You can't buy iv bags of fluid anywhere.  You wouldn't know what kind to use in what circumstances, anyway, or how much to use, or how to monitor the patient's fluid status, or what to do if you cause a blood infection by sticking someone with a needle into a vein.

There are resources out there on how to care for someone with the flu.  Whether we like it or not, we have to try the hospital if the person cannot drink fluids or is in respiratory distress or unconscious.

Again, I'm not recommending anything...

BUT, vet supply catalogs & pharmacy supply are resourse.  No scrip required.

Iv's are tricky and dangerous to use if you dont know how to insert them, prevent sepsis(infection), and especialyy if you are uneducated on type of fluid and electrlytes needed to replace. As a physician I have stocked quite a few dozen liters of the stuff . It is inexpensive and has a long shelf life). God help us all if I need to go to that shelf or my defibrllator.

I am starting to really worry and now my wife has finally got the message especially when she saw how ill my 4 year old daughter was with just plain old flu  3 weeks ago. Take care everybody. Look out for yourself and your loved ones and pets. No one else will!

Hope for the best, but prepare for the worst!

My wife is an RN, she does IV infusion( infectious disease clinic) all day, starts IV's, etc. So, if I could find a site that sold catheter, tubing, needles and just plain saline for rehydration. As, it is illegal to take stuff from the hospital, and the IV bags 1000ml are controlled.

We have phenegran oral/suppository, Lomtil, but no way to quickly get fluids in a ill person.

IV setups.... vet supply

IV solutions.... medical supply catalogs.... google should get you there.  Check with your wife, plain saline is NOT recommended for IV fluid.

You could also check with your wife about gastronasal tube for re-hydration & my early slapdown argument, hydration via the rectum.  Just search this site for gatronasal & anal hydration.  You will find all the fights and arguments and conclusions.

Hydration is of utmost importance for a BF patient.

For those of us that are not needle savy..I had read somewhere one time about using a rectum I.V..use just use a ziplock bag and a straw and you get wtaer into the cavity of the rectum...does not sound great, but it is suppose to work..I have stocked up on straws and of course I have ziplock bags..worth a look see if google has anymore information on this...

an old fashion hotwater bottle works for this also..something about the system will absorb the water through the rectum....

I do not see the rectum IV being effective with diarhea or at all. how fast can the rectum absord fluids. My wife is qualified to start IV's she is an RN and doesit daily, so I just need the material to buy, without having to resort to stealing from a medical facility.
