Happy New Year everyone! It's a new year, a new start. I have decided I am really going to work hard this year to get my house, my WHOLE house reorganized and reprepped (is that a word?). I know you know what I mean, go through all my preps and make sure everything is good. We have had crazy weather, sickness, power outages, etc. I think it's just time to look and revaluate everything I have at this point. And since I have the next 4 days off work what better time to start now.

So what is everyone else going to work on this month?

OTC and pet preps. More canned food too since El Niño is on the way. I also hope to get a dehydrater, this month. Happy New Year!
Be prepared! It may be time....^_^v

I've been thinking about going through my preps and re-prioritizing what I have. I need to go through my garage so badly and toss a bunch of stuff - we just inherited a washer/dryer from my in laws after they moved, and I consequently lost the storage space where they now sit. It's nice not to have to go to the laundromat, and we're definitely saving money, but space was always at a premium and now it just got worse.
I see more shelves in my future...

I had a 3 plaque Pro Com ventless gas heater installed today as an alternative heating source. Heats up to 700sq. feet. It has an electric blower that can be used if you want to but works awesome without. I am using it now. I had it installed on my living room wall, since that's where the gas line was. So between this and the ventless gas wall heater in the bathroom, I can probably heat about half my house during a power outage, enough to be comfortable anyway. I tried to post a picture of it, but I can't figure out how, lol.

It seems that California will get hit with some big storms next week, so I think I will get some extra water and definitely more cat food/litter earlier than planned.

Aw let's hope none of us have power outages. Now I kinda wish I chose the apartment with the fireplace (was worried my cats would try to get into it - they try to touch the oven when I am baking).  It is supposedly going to rain for seven days straight in Northern Orange County and about six days straight in the Northern Central Valley (my hometown area). I live on the second floor of my complex, so I don't think I really need sandbags, but told my family to get some back home. I just hope my wooden balcony will be ok to walk on after all the rain.

Good choice on getting heat in your home Penham. We all need backups because we never know when we will need a secondary source of heat.

Looks like we are going to get some snow from that CA storm! Love the snow!

good move with the back up heating Penham
always a good idea in a cold climate

we have gas logs in the fireplace which will heat a good portion of the house and
if worse comes to worse
we can retreat to the basement and use the wood burning stove

This is the heater that I got, only mine was about more because I opted for the electric blower one, which can be used off or on. I have been using it in without the blower for right now. But nice to know if I wanted to use it I could.

I am using it with natural gas, but can also be used with propane.

If you guys are expecting big storms and power outages, be sure to stock up on some porridge oats and powdered milk. All you need to add is water and porridge cooks in under 10 mins. The big advantage of porridge as a food is that it generates heat inside the body (ask the Scots if in doubt). You can eat it when you are freezing cold and I guarantee you'll take off at least one sweater by the time you've finished.

We're still in summer here so i'm bottling some fruit. I'm about to kill and process 20 geese and about 20 chickens (not all at once!!!!). I'm going to bottle the geese in goose fat. I think it's called confit.

A few years ago I had a strange sort of premonition that the Alpine Fault would rupture. I was reading about the fault and sort of said to myself - in my head - I wonder when it will go off and I very clearly heard a voice say "April 16". I'm not the type to have weird premonitions or anything similar, and I'm sure it'll amount to nothing but still it's playing in the back of my mind that maybe it will rupture then. The thing is I don't know if that means April 16th (in any year) or April in the year 2016. Anyway, just in case, I'm going to stock up on cat and dog food as we're just fine for everything else.

Kiwi mum I believe in premontions so listen to your gut. Do you have a way that you keep you glass can goods from falling and breaking? I am a real worrier about stuff like that.

I have wooden bars on the front of all my pantry shelves, and the shelves in the kitchen where we keep the in use ketchup, jams etc, and also on the shelves where my teapot and glasses sit.

I have a book on the memories of people who were children at the time of huge Napier earthquake in 1931, and one man remembers coming home from school as soon as he could after the earthquake to find his mother in tears in the kitchen. His father was grim faced as he pushed the wheelbarrow straight in through the back door and then started shovelling all the broken jars out of the pantry. The quake happened in Feb, which is late summer, early autumn, and his mother had put up hundreds of jars of bottled fruit. The broken mess was over a foot deep. He also remembered how their tea cups used to hang in a row from hooks, and all that was left were the handles hanging in a row.

I generally keep things that won't break on the top shelves and and heavy items and breakables lower down, behind the straps.

Here in NZ you have to strap certain items to the structure of your house. So our hot water cylinder, woodstoves and cooker are strapped to the wall frames. We've also strapped our fridge and large bits of furniture like the dresser and sideboard. I had a picture fall off of the wall and land on my head in the 7.1 Sept 10 earthquake.

I bought 3 boxes of laundry detergent, some more canned veggies and some individual cartons of milk that you do not have to refrigerate.
