I guess summer is in full swing. I hope everyone has their gardens going? I didn't even plant anything in pots this year. My peach tree is loaded with peaches. The two plum trees I planted last year are still alive so that is good, I guess a few more years before they get fruit. I am still working on paper products this month a continuation from last month. I am also cleaning out closets and making space for paper products and getting rid of stuff I don't need. What is everyone currently working on?

Got a post hole digger and a pick ax for outhouse digging. Ground is hard and rocky in Colorado and as I saw my new fence going in I bought myself both those tools. If TSHTF I will be building an outhouse right away.

I didn't do anything for June & it looks like July isn't getting off to a great start either. Anyone ever have a dog with major digestive problems... I'm talking IBD type stuff? I've got a 2 1/2 yr old Shih Tzu with problems from day one but 2015 has been especially bad. She's on her 5th dog food for 2015. Costing me an arm & a leg when we have to go to the vet. She can't seem to go more than 6 weeks w/o vomiting. But she's no stranger to the other problem either. Have tried premium dog foods and one vet food. Trying to avoid putting her on the most expensive vet RX food. Vomiting returned this week. Might be picking up dog kibble #6 today. I'm at my wits end with this dog, I'm telling you.

Sick pets are expensive! I had a cat once that had anxiety issues and the vet put her on Prozac, lol. Then I had another cat that had to have a urinary tract surgery that cost $800 and had to eat $40 a bag cat food after that.

Sorry to hear that, Jen.
Penham - we had urinary tract crystal issues with one of our cats. Fortunately, no surgery needed other than catheter placement on two occasions. We got by after with a name brand food that was specifically formulated for that problem. We just had to force feed a cat that decided to stop eating. They're notoriously picky eaters, and when they become anorexic they lose their appetite altogether. After that, they progress to something called "fatty liver" and the odds of recovery go down dramatically. I looked into what it would cost at the vets, and it could easily have run into the thousands if they'd kept him for the duration and put in a feeding tube. We did it ourselves by wrapping him in a towel and forcing high calorie food using syringes two or three times a day for a couple of weeks. I gave him subcutaneous fluids as well because he wasn't drinking. Thankfully, it turned out well and he started eating again and gained all the weight back - and then some. |

I am counting this as prepping, been working towards this for 15 years. I paid my house off yesterday, 2 months early. I am very excited that I will no longer have a monthly payment.

Try a Costco chicken. Maybe add a tiny bit of leftovers, peas, rice etc, not too much, and use the skin and juices and a tiny bit of water. If your dog can digest rice OK then a rice/chicken blend makes this way cheaper than any canned dog food and your dog will always love it. I make four freezer bags per chicken and freeze them. Best thing is its dog food that we can eat too! ; ) |

Jen, my dad was good friends with our local vet and we had a dog with arthritis. The standard treatment was very costly and involved injections into the affected joints, and the vet told us to skip this and to give the dog parsley and cod liver oil every day. He said that these two elements would guarantee the health of any dog, regardless of age or illness. The amount he suggested was one heaped tablespoon of finely chopped parsley stirred into the dogs food every day, and enough cod liver oil to fill the indentation in a saucer every day.
Well, my dad followed his advice and the arthritis stopped being an issue and that dog lived to be 17 years old and died in her sleep. That was 30 years ago and still, at my parents house there is a bank of self sown parsley about 6m long.

We are trying to stay away from Chicken & Turkey oneflu. We are on a LID food trial. One novel protein & one carb. Just went from Lamb (which she had soft stools with) and now on Salmon. She didn't vomit on the Lamb but don't want problems on the south end of things either. Up next would be Duck & Potato. I really don't want to jump the home cooked or Raw bandwagon, it's too expensive & time consuming.
I could have the biopsies done but at a cost of min $2000, & I just can't do that right now. But that would give us the definitive answer is this IBD & if so what kind, for example food allergy/intolerance. Even for dogs that you do go through with the biopsies it's still trial & error to find the food that works for them but it narrows the field greatly. Worst case is Prednisone for the inflamed gut... but I'll avoid that at all costs. Side effects are horrendous. I'm in a dog's with IBD group on facebook & as bad as I have it some of them have had to put their dogs down it's so bad.

I don't know if its available in the states, but if you can get it have you tried "Chappie". Jen? It is dirt cheap and fish based. It works like a charm on delicate tummy dogs.

I checked it out Techno & we cannot get Chappie. Sounds interesting though. I read on one message board that it is comparable to Hills Science Diet Sensitive Skin & Stomach but I'm not sure if that's true & Hill's did not work for my dog. Thanks though :)

Sorry to hear that Jen. Have you tried Satori's probiotic idea?
Another thought to try exploring is milk/lactose intolerance. Lots of commercial foodstufs for pets contain milk, even though it is the commonest source of problems - I have several lactose intolerant cats and finding a feed with no milk is like looking for a needle in a field of haystacks. Yoghurt should still be ok as the lactose is eaten up by the bacteria that make it probiotic. If probiotics help, then adding in prebiotics (innulin from artichokes, soluble fibre from beans) may help. People with IBS type symptoms often avoid fibre to prevent flare-ups, but in the long run this makes things worse. Re-introduce very gradually or you will get flare-ups! DRAMATICALLY MESSILY! In humans, the main cause of IBS is having the wrong bacteria in the gut. Though probiotics can help massively there is a more radical, permanent solution: Take a long course (or rather get the dog to) of an antibiotic cocktail and wipe out as much gut bacteria as possible. THEN take a small amount of pooh from a healthy family member (dog in this case - this has got to be easier for dogs as they lack the YEUCH reaction) following this with a good varied probiotic finishes off the process nicely. |

Had a friend with a dog that had a bad stomach. They fed him cooked rice and with cooked hamburger meat in it. Dog could digest that and keep it down. Not sure if this will help or not. I know when you have a dog it is like a child and you will do anything to help them eat!
I pray you find an answer. |

I have! So tired lol Still working on it actually. We rented a U-Haul van and I loaded most the stuff in from my old place, and we got movers for my new place because there is no way I can lift a queen sized mattress by myself up the stairs. I originally rolled it down the stairs though.
I should be completely moved in by tonight. Thanks for asking :) |

If what is happening in Greece happened here? Could you survive on your preps? What else would you need to survive and be comfortable?

The best thing I remember about that area is one time I went to the west coast surfing championships at Huntington Beach, I was soooo excited cause I had never got to go the west coast ones before. I lived in the Virginia Beach area and always went to the east coast surfing championships. No I don't surf, lol, just like to watch.

I could survive for a year and would have to cut wood for the next year. To be comfortable my neighbors need to be preppers but they are not and I would have to help organize them. At least we have two cops in my 1 block area who are friends. It might help. People will be shocked if this happens here which it can. |

I was listening to a piece on the radio the other day that was discussing the impending shortage of food in Greece, and it got me thinking about my preps again. What I think I would need versus what I would actually need has been constantly changing since I started prepping, and I think it's time to go through what I have and see if it fits with my current assessment. And as always, water is the problem (wish they made freeze dried water - it would make it so much easier to store...), and I hope to address that one soon.
My bug out vehicle was my old motohome, but unfortunately she's at the point where a full rebuild is necessary (and I'm not allowed to get rid of her according to my son, who named her Bessie), so she's going to be repurposed into a truck because the original manufacturer used a Ford F350 dually chassis. A flat bed would suit my needs much better now, and I'm trying to think of a way that I can add some living space to the bed - even pitching a tent back there would make her useful in an emergency. The planned 7'x11' stake bed would allow us to move an ungodly amount of supplies if we had to, and she'll be more than up to the task of towing another vehicle. That would likely be my latest toy - a 1968 Baja Bug. That's going to be turned into the ultimate zombie apocalypse vehicle (although I plan to give it to my son when he graduates). Should make for an interesting convoy if we ever have to leave town. |

Did you go to the U.S. Open of Surfing? I think that's what it's called haha I like Huntington Beach, but it's hard to find parking so I typically end up in Long Beach at Alamitos Beach. Laguna Beach is a bit too dirty for me. :/ |

Yes, Hachi, West Coast Open I think it was called, it has been years ago. I used to go to the East Coast ones in Virginia Beach cause I used to live there, so when I just happened to be in California, in that area, one year when they were going on I had to go, just because. I miss the beach....

It's funny, as close as have always lived to the beach, I don't go as much as I should. Right now, all Los Angeles County beaches are closed due to heavy thunder and lightning. According to the Long Beach Comic-Con Facebook fan page, the power outages are still ongoing there.
