It's hard to believe it's July! So what is everyone going to prep this month? I am going to defrost my freezer this weekend and clean anything old out of there. Then that will lead to restocking it. Not sure what else I'm going to work on.

Well I defrosted my chest freezer and put in my survival seeds in there. Have lots of dried tomatoes and herbs in there too. All I have left to do is straighten up my basement that will take a day or two so in no hurry.
Am visiting my son at college, spent the last two days cleaning. His definition of clean and mine are a little different...lol. He is working and doing summer classes so I had plenty of time to clean. Happy 4th! |

This year we are having an early strawberry season - so the strawberry preserves for the year are now in the pantry. It is very sweet so I don't use much at a time but it is worth making for the wonderful red colour (it doesn't go brown like some strawberry jams). A splash of colour in the preps is good for the soul!
I am not sure of the shelf life, but it is good for at least one year (it tends to get eaten before the new crop is in), but I guess the shelf life would be a couple of years at least if not more. |

I actually did get my freezer defrosted today. It's a job I hate doing, but fortunately only have to do it once every couple of years, so now it's done. Got older stuff cleaned out, now time to restock.

Heading to costco to get a stash of meat for my freezer. Another case of green beans/corn and tomato sauce. Will get some more peanut butter. Also will get some more canned chicken and tuna. The big thing for me is water. Do not have any stored right now. I buy cases and then we end up using them for camping and water parks so go through them. Will work more on that!

Me too! Lately, Ralph's in Southern CA has had 50% off chicken and 50% off pork sales in their weekly ads. I also buy meat in bulk and I am finally going to be investing in a dehydrator soon. I'm mostly keto/low carb now, but I still do indulge in rice and noodles on occasion, so I don't need to buy as much of that. When the season is right, I'll start growing my broccoli again and hope the maintenance doesn't kill my organic balcony garden, this time around.

Hachi, if you are going to dehydrate meat you need a machine that will do up to 165 degrees. My dehydrator just died today! I am disappointed because I have not used it that much over the years...but if TSHTF and it went out I would not be happy. I just purchased a "solar" dehydrator because I do not want to be without a way to dehydrate easily without making frames and screens for a homemade solar dehydrator.
I don't dehydrate much any more since my DH is gone and my son is in college. Have not had a garden for 4 years. May do one next year. I am growing a couple of pots of tomatoes and herbs so I am doing drying of the herbs now. When I use this new solar dehydrator I will give a report. I will do some apples this fall to see how it works. |

I have a new toy...I mean...bug out vehicle - a 4WD Jeep Grand Cherokee. Spent the last few weeks equipping it with 31" tires and a 3" lift. By the fall, it should have off-road lights, roof rack, extra gas cans, etc.
