.

"When the Spanish flu started in 1918 it was a relatively wimpy virus. Then it heated up," killing 40 million people, Osterhaus told the Journal. "I wouldn't be too comfortable that this swine flu virus isn't hot yet."

It's mild now....  and they have no idea yet what catagory ...

At least we are not unaware.

We have had Pandemics before with No Social Unrest.

In 1929-1930......There was a Pandemic of Porcine A/SW/31

In 1947..........    there was a Pandemic of  A/FM/1/47/H1N1

In 1957.............there was a Pandemic of  A/SING/1/57/H2N2

In 1968-1969..... there was a Pandemic of  A/HK/1/68 / H3N2

In 1976 ............there was a limited epidemic of   (porcine) SWh1n1

In 1977.............there was a Pandemic   A/USSR/90/77/ H1N1

The data demonstrate that the A/USSR/90/77 strain is a recombinant virus.

(look for this strain again...)

I think the worry is that, while you're right in saying we've had pandemics before without social unrest, we've never had a major pandemic in a modern society like ours which operates on the just in time system for just about everything. In the event that the stores became empty, the lights went out, fresh potable water was no longer available at the turn of a faucet, and hospitals became completely overwhelmed, I think we could expect things to get pretty unpleasant for a while.
"Buy it cheap. Stack it deep"
"Any community that fails to prepare, with the expectation that the federal government will come to the rescue, will be tragically wrong." Michael Leavitt, HHS Secretary.
