Ebola – Sierra Leone to lock down 2.5 million people to fight the virus

Sierra Leone is embarking on its second three-day curfew, aimed at keeping people at home under quarantine, to stem the tied of Ebola that has hit hardest in that country. The first in September last year was considered a success by officials, despite some criticism. The number of Ebola cases has slowed considerably since the peak of the outbreak that began in December 2013, but the experts say the virus is far from eradicated. There is clearly no room for complacency. – Marika Sboros

The lockdown is aimed at controlling a recent spike in the three districts which threatened to undermine the recovery.

 ‘Tremendous progress’

Good find Kay.  We've been hearing a lot about complacency with Ebola.   West Africa has had nearly 5000 new cases since the beginning of this year (since it supposedly slowed), and they're STILL averaging 400 cases a week?

I wouldn't worry about it much anymore. Our troops are home so we're safe...

If I remember correctly, in the height of the outbreak we were seeing 500 - 700 cases per week on average, and now it's about 350 - 400 per week and holding steady.    Cases were  reduced by about 40%, and that's about it,  but if you listen to various health agencies and officials, there are hardly no new cases these days, lol.  Apparently the public has been snowed a bit on that one.

For the last few weeks Liberia has been trumpeting "NO new cases" (broken yesterday), but the figures that they gave WHO (as published in the road map report) for the week ending 18th March showed an increase in 183 cases and 62 deaths from the figures they gave the previous week.  If the 'no new cases' was true, then the Liberians are stage managing the release of the old data and the weekly averages are next to meaningless.

The figures Liberia has provided so far show nearly one death out of every thousand people in the population.  I believe the true figures are much higher, but even the lower figure is horrendous.

It isn't over ...... renewed concern has been triggered by fresh setbacks in these countries Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea. Today 235 suspected cases in Sierra Leone's lock down, meanwhile Guinea declares Ebola 'health emergency' in five regions.

The fat lady is not singing and Chucks warning about Ebola becoming a chronic problem may be correct. Perhaps the only way out of this mess is a safe efficient vaccine.

Sierra Leone Ebola lockdown exposes hundreds of suspected cases
Mon Mar 30

FREETOWN (Reuters) - A three-day lockdown in Sierra Leone has exposed hundreds of potential new cases of Ebola

961 death alerts nationwide during the lockdown's first two days and 495 reports of illness of which 235 were suspected Ebola

Mr Conde said he was declaring "a reinforced health emergency for a period of 45 days in the prefectures of Forecariah, Coyah, Dubreka, Boffa and Kindia" in a statement published in national media.
The focus of the virus "has shifted to our country's coastal areas," he said

Apparently GlaxoSmith's vaccine isn't working after all, and hopefully it's not causing more problems.   The timing is a little suspect with the vaccine trials now in phase III over there.  I have a feeling their test subjects are going to be a little disappointed for being Guinea pigs.

They will probably have to go down the whole virus ” vaccine "route, and not a vaccine that just contains parts of it, I.e. a full live attenuated virus vaccine.

To do this they have to use the original virus weakened. This way the immune system responds to all of the ebola virus instead of just a few parts.     Problem comes by how they weaken the virus. They have to get a balance between the vaccine strain still being the true Ebola virus but distorted enough not to be pathogenic.
