The infectious person in this article/video probably thought they had a mild illness with no real risks attached.

DEAD WRONG!

New York – An El Al Airlines flight attendant is now in a coma and battling encephalitis after contracting measles. Israel's Ministry of Health says she may have contracted the disease in New York, in Israel, or on a flight between the two.

The 43-year-old woman was seemingly healthy before coming down with a fever March 31, CBS New York reports. Due to complications from measles that resulted in brain inflammation, she's now been in a coma for 10 days and needs a respirator because she can't breathe on her own.

The flight attendant, whose name has not been released, received only one dose of the measles vaccine as a child, according to reports.

It's not just their own health they risk.

There has been a measles out break in our area here in NZ, and I was interested to read the medical advice in the paper saying that no one over the age of 49 needs to have the MMR as it is assumed that they were exposed to measles as a child.

When I recently saw a doctor I asked her about this and why, if everyone over the age of 49 is fine, why should younger adults need to worry about it. She couldn't tell me as she didn't really know.

So I'm wondering if, as children, everyone over the age of 49 was exposed to measles, why wasn't it seen as a serious disease back then? I remember my brother getting it, and the rest of us, plus the neighbours 3 children, all being put in the same room as him so we could catch it too. My mother wasn't even slightly worried about the disease. So why all the fuss now?
Those who got it wrong, for whatever reason, may feel defensive and retrench into a position that doesn’t accord with the facts.

The UK has published measles statistics back to 1940. It seems that the mortality rate has varied a lot, and could depend on other areas of care. At the beginning of WWII the death rate was between 2 and 3 per thousand cases (in my opinion a very high rate). It dropped towards the end of the war to 1.5/1000. Then to when I would have had measles it had fallen further to 0.2/1000 cases. I presume that with better nutrition and better health care the numbers of deaths decrease.

I also guess that the time of our childhoods, there was not much to be done to prevent so our parents couldn't do much about it.

However, you must also remember that for every death there is at least one child who is left disabled by the disease, so the serious effects are more than just those shown in the death rates. [I also wonder if the death rates could be higher in populations that have other "issues"]

Measles cases quadruple globally in 2019, says UN

Quote It is worth noting these figures are provisional, the WHO says the true figures will be much higher. And that measles is far from harmless. It kills around 100,000 people, mostly children, every year.

Measles Difference:

Measles is a viral infection and is of two types. Ordinary measles is referred to as rubeola and is more serious that may cause permanent damage to the victim. On the other hand, rubella is also known as German measles and is relatively mild. It is also called three day illness that does not lead to any complications in children. However, if a pregnant woman catches rubella (German measles), it can have severe consequences with as babies can be born with defects such as cataract, deafness or mental retardation. In some cases there may even be miscarriage of the pregnant woman. Rubella is best known for a distinctive red rash on the body. On the other hand, measles, or rubeola or measles should not be confused with German measles or Rubella though there are many similarities in the symptoms of the two infections. Both viruses are different and measles is far more severe and serious than rubella.
Rubella (German measles), also called three day measles is a mild disease that produces red rashes on the body of kids and usually goes away in three days. This becomes serious if pregnant women catch it and leads to birth defects and even miscarriage.
Measles (rubeola) is caused by rubeola virus and is also called hard measles or red measles or simply measles. It continues for many days though people get well finally. However, it is sometimes associated with pneumonia or encephalitis.

I had the Hard Measles and almost died. I remember the Doctor coming to our home several times and giving me a shot of penicillin, I think. I ran a High temp of 104-106 at times and my mother had to wipe me down with a cool cloth to try and bring it down. I think I got the penicillin to avoid pneumonia, in the "old" days the doctors used everything they had so kids like me did not die.

So when I had a child they got all their vaccines. Do not take a chance with your child's life.

The main reason that no fuss was made, was there was no escape. There was no vaccine.

Death and maiming rates do vary widely. |The standard death rate now is just under 1/1000. The same each for post infection encephalitis, blindness and deafness. The encephalitis risk lasts for a whole post exposure year.

In times of famine, depravation and other concurrent illnesses, and/or with no access to modern medicine, rates have risen as high as 1/10!
