HFMD outbreak: Melaka records 50pct rise in cases

By Bernama - July 22, 2018 @ 9:53am

MELAKA: Melaka recorded 1,446 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) so far this year – representing a nearly 50 per cent rise compared to the same period last year.

However, despite the rise in numbers and with several schools and child centres here ordered closed, the outbreak is still under control, said state Health Committee chairman Low Chee Leong.

He added that various initiatives have been taken by the Health Department to contain the disease’s spread and to raise awareness among the public.

Meanwhile, Melaka Health director Datuk Dr Ghazali Othman advised the public to practice good hygiene.

He also told parents with children showing symptoms of HFMD not to send them to school or take them to public places, to prevent the disease’s spread. – BERNAMA
