Now 6500 in quarantine.   I'm guessing 10+ new cases will be reported later today.   The higher the increase in qurantine, probably the higher new cases.

South Korea MERS death toll rises to 20

SEOUL, South Korea (CNN) —South Korean officials announced one more death in the country's MERS outbreak Wednesday, raising the total death toll to 20.

Eight new cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) were also announced, bringing the total number to 162 -- 18 of whom are in an "unstable" condition, according to South Korea's Ministry of Health.

The number of people under quarantine in South Korea, both in their own homes or in quarantine facilities, rose by 922 from Tuesday to 6,508.

The World Health Organization said Tuesday that the number of new cases "appears to be declining" -- indicating that the outbreak could be slowing down. But it also warned that "all outbreaks are unpredictable."

"This is especially true for a comparatively new disease like MERS" where many facets of the virus are not well understood, the WHO said.

Earlier this week, there had been a sign of a possible return to normalcy, as thousands of schools across South Korea re-opened after closures due to the deadly outbreak. But it came with heightened awareness; children's temperatures were monitored in classrooms and teachers warned students to practice personal hygiene and frequently wash their hands.

Not all schools have reopened; 440 remain shut as officials seek to stop the spread of MERS.

The WHO had recommended re-opening institutions last week because transmission of the virus had not been linked to schools. The MERS outbreak remains largely confined to health care settings

South Korea reports 20th MERS death, local media slams government's ability to contain the outbreak

Posted about 6 hours ago

South Korea has announced its 20th death from the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS), as criticism grows over authorities' ability to contain the outbreak.

A 54-year-old woman died from MERS this morning, about two weeks after being diagnosed on June 5, the health ministry said.

It also reported eight new patients, bringing the total to 162, a day after the ministry said it was cautiously optimistic that the worst was over as the number of new cases appeared to be falling.

Almost all infections so far have been limited to hospitals, particularly the Samsung Medical Centre in Seoul.

But several new patients diagnosed in recent days were not among those placed under quarantine.

One new patient had developed symptoms on Saturday, but continued normal daily activities, including going to work and taking a trip to a public bathhouse.

The 52-year-old public servant, currently in isolation, visited his mother in late May while she was a patient in the Samsung hospital, and his sister was also diagnosed with MERS on June 10.

Another patient, an ambulance driver at the Samsung hospital, also continued to go to catch the subway to work days after developing symptoms.

Seoul's major conservative newspaper, Dong-A Ilbo, slammed the government for "unrealistically" playing down the magnitude of the outbreak.

"All the optimistic words and predictions from health authorities have turned out to be wrong so far," it said in an editorial.

"We are concerned whether [health minister] Moon Hyung-Pyo... will ever be able to keep the situation under control."
