Scientists find key to 'turbo-charging' immune system to kill all cancers - Telegraph By Sarah Knapton, Science Editor 7:00PM BST 16 Apr 2015 Imperial College scientists are developing a gene therapy designed to boost immune cells A protein which ‘turbo-charges’ the immune system so that it can fight off any cancer or virus has been discovered by scientists. In a breakthrough described as a ‘game-changer’ for cancer treatment, researchers at Imperial College found a previously unknown molecule which boosts the body’s ability to fight off chronic illnesses. Scientists at Imperial College London, who led the study, are now developing a gene therapy based on the protein and hope to begin human trials in three years. “This is exciting because we have found a completely different way to use the immune system to fight cancer,” said Professor Philip Ashton-Rickardt, from the Section of Immunobiology in the Department of Medicine at Imperial, who led the study. “It could be a game-changer for treating a number of different cancers and viruses. “This is a completely unknown protein. Nobody had ever seen it before or was even aware that it existed. It looks and acts like no other protein.” The protein – named lymphocyte expansion molecule, or LEM, promotes the spread of cancer killing ‘T cells’ by generating large amounts of energy. Normally when the immune system detects cancer it goes into overdrive trying to fight the disease, flooding the body with T cells. But it quickly runs out of steam. However the new protein causes a massive energy boost which makes T cells in such great numbers that the cancer cannot fight them off. It also causes a boost of immune memory cells which are able to recognise tumours and viruses they have encountered previously so there is less chance that they will return. The team made the discovery while screening mice with genetic mutations. They found one type produced ten times the number of cancer-fighting T cells, suppressing infections and becoming resistant to cancer. Researchers found that the mice with enhanced immunity produced high levels of the unknown protein which is also found in humans. They are hoping to produce a gene therapy whereby T cells of cancer patients could be enhanced with the protein and then injected back into the body. It could end the need for harsh chemotherapies as the body itself would be fighting the disease, rather than toxic drugs. Dr Mike Turner, Head of Infection and Immunobiology at The Wellcome Trust, said: “The discovery of a protein that could boost the immune response to not only cancer, but also to viruses, is a fascinating one. “Further investigation in animal models is needed before human trials can commence, but there is potential for a new type of treatment that capitalises on the immune system’s innate ability to detect and kill abnormal cells.” Charities said the protein showed 'great promise' and were eager to see if it could be translated into humans. Dr Alan Worsley, senior science information officer at Cancer Research UK, said: “This exciting work in mice is still at an early stage and only looked at one type of cancer. “Cancer often finds a way to suppress the immune system, but drugs that overcome this and allow immune cells to target cancer show great promise. Research into the biology of the immune system could help develop more effective treatments by increasing the number of cancer-killing immune cells. “The researchers now need to figure out how to develop drugs that target this molecule, and whether doing so would be safe and effective in cancer patients.” The research was published in the journal Science. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/science/science-news/11542544/Scientists-find-key-to-turbo-charging-immune-system-to-kill-all-cancers.html |

I pray that Nancy can hang in there for a few more years. This sounds to be the biggest of the biggest discoveries. Maybe you can begin now to get her in to be an early testee. I would do it myself.

Wow, what a find, Oneflu! I would go for the trials myself. As the protein is already found in the body, the possibility of adverse reactions is lower. I really hope they push for human trials soonest.
Hang on Nancy. Fight! There is a real point to that terrible chemo'.

Albert and all, this discussion forum may turn out to be the most important thing that you have done. I have a question to. There is new product(at least to me) called 4-MU. It has been shown to stop the spread of prostate CA and a possible cure for prostate CA. This 4-MU is an over the counter in some countries, but I can not seem to find it for sell. I learned of 4-MU from the evening FOX NEWS from their medical expert. I know that is not a good source, but what he said was good.
Do any of you know where I can legally buy 4-MU? Even though 4-MU is not meant for Endometrial Papillary Carcinoma. This is the only product that I have ever seen on a National TV network that let this be announced. So I am thinking that there are other over the counter products in some countries that could help her. I want to know how I can buy 4-MU legally for myself. Because we all know that any man who dies of any thing but Prostate CA.has died a premature death. I would appreciate any help on how to legally buy 4-MU?I would take it myself and also give it to my wife, because I have never seen a product that was suppose to CURE any kind of Cancer. Please every one continue your prayers and also let me know what you know of 4-MU and any other cancer cure products.?Johnray1 |

You have been with me and for (Nancy) mu wife, since I first posted my wife's diagnosis. I thank you for this. This 4-MU that I am talking about is suppose to an over the counter product in some countries and was announced on an international Newa station by their medical expert. You may know far more about this and other products than any of us,because you had the good sense to turn away from the conventional stuff probably years ago. So if you will search your brain and your friends brains. You may know more than you think that you do.
Please tell your husband hello for me, I know what it is like to be supposedly disabled from combat, but still know that you can contribute and no one will let you.Johnray1 |

Johnray, did you clear your computers temporary internet files, aka cache, aka cookies? If so it would have erased your log in info if you had it set to automatically log you in every time you come to AFT. That would be why it might show up as a guest post. Just a thought.
Praying for you & Nancy still, how are the house chores going? Did you ever convince her to use the bedside potty?

To All, I am asking for all of your prayers again. My wife Nancy is having severe G.I. problems,I think that it is damage from the Radiation treatments. If she not improve by tomorrow or the next day,I am going to have to take her back to the hospital and she will probably end up with a colostomy. This is the last thing in the world that she wants. She has even said that she will refuse it.
I am asking for all of your prayers for my wife and for me. Johnray1 |

I have a friend with a colostomy. I do not know if this will help, but she tells me it is the best decision she ever made.
Yes it has its problems. But she got married recently and it did not cause any problems there. She even has a few pretty lace tubes to cover the thing, along with the rest of her midriff, and has done some (almost) nudisim with it! She looks better with her clothes off than I do - the cow! Maybe if Nancy can hear this she will feel more positive about it. You get the prayers anyway.

John I'm sorry I'm just now seeing this. We have been crazy busy this weekend. My son was lucky enough to be invited to American Legion Boys State all last week & this weekend were closing ceremonies. So proud of him!
Am glad to hear that Nancy has hurdled another obstacle even if it's temporary. Every win matters. Yes hard times lay ahead but don't neglect to see the good for today or even each hour. Looking for the good no matter how small will help make something terrible more bearable. No matter what it is... could be Nancy ate better that meal or was in a better mood than you've seen in awhile, or a old friend calls, or a funny show on television takes you away for a few minutes... or you spot out the window a few deer cross your yard. I live in a more rural area so we actually see deer but if you live in a more suburban area you might not but you get my point. There's something good in each day you just have to see it, God is always with you, I'm praying for His comfort for you & Nancy.

May God bless you both with peace and love. Nancy sounds like a smart lady. Only advice I will give you is let Nancy make the decisions about what treatments she will and will not do. I did that with my husband and if you knew me it was hard because I wanted him to fight to the last. He decided to live in comfort until the last and I did not fight him. He was happy until the end and that was worth it.

Jen 147.everything that you say here is correct. Plus the best looking 8 point Buck that I have seen in years was standing in my drive way, against the garage doors the other night.
Plus,my fearless dog laid in the house on his butt all last summer and the deer eat basically all of my beans and he did not bark one time any night and I live in a small town.Johnray1 |

FluMom, my wife does and will continue to make her own decisions. She surprised me when she decided to take the Radiation treatments and the Chemo. She watched her mother die from cancer and she swore that she would never have any treatment if she did get cancer. She Not only got cancer, she got an incredible cancer. even with Radiation and Chemo.(They were suppose to buy her another 2 or 3 years). There is no 5 year survival rate with this cancer. There is no 3 year survival rate with this cancer.----But she decided to go ahead and have the treatments. I can not image another 1 1/2 to two years like she is suffering now.But I will be with her and her primary care giver until it is over.
It is very surprising at how many people and family members no longer stop to visit. The number has dropped to zero. Johnray1 |

Truthfully, Johnray, a lot of people drop off from your life when illness strikes. I had it happen when I had my health dxs. Nothing is fatal/terminal, but they start to see you as a burden. I just think, well the ones I still have in my life are the ones that really matter. A person I know left their terminally ill mate twice because they went together again out of pity, and then that person backed down again. People don't realize the effect that kind of thing has on a person. I am very glad you are sticking by your wife. I hope she finds many good days, even if it's a small triumph, that still means a lot. :)

Jen147,My wife is doing very bad. I expect her to die today because of 2 dreams that I had last night. In one of the dreams,Nancy told me that she was leaving and she turned her back to me and walked off,she has not been able to walk for weeks now. In the other dream,I saw two balls of light and they left toward the sky,but one seemed to be leading the other. But no one knows for sure. 2 of our 3 kids are here.My youngest daughter came about a week ago and she has basically taken over Nancy's care. I was on my last legs.I was more worn out than I thought.I have slept a lot since she got here. She has not eaten or drank anything in days.It does not look good.Johnray1

Sir I don't propose to have a cure but I can give a some guidance.
Firstly all cancers propagate via FERMENTATION processes, FERMENTATION is very inefficient compared to our combustion process therefore adopting a calorie restrictive diet (avoiding high carbohydrate foods) this will help slow cancers progression eg avoid high calorie foods especially SUGARS, STARCHES ect, only sugar intake should be for hydration purposes only. Cancers biology apparently cannot metabolize Ketones , our biochemistry allow us to obtain energy from Ketones in the form of a Ketogenic diet this is another method accoriding to Dr Dr_D_Agostino I refer you to Dr_Mercola_Interview with_Dr_D_Agostino on Cancer Metabolism, I think its on youtube ? Vitamin C is a interferon promoter will help attack cancers, for advanced cancer I would consider getting regular high dose vitC IV treatments. Vitamin D is known to promote Cytokines that are known to have very good anti-cancer properties such as anti-angiogensis properties, matasis antagonist by preventing cancers cells from maturing as well as other beneficial effects, Caution here CYTOKINES are very powerful and I recommend you do not overdose on Vit D only take recommended daily dose. If obtaining vitD from vitamin tablets you should consider taking Vitamin K2 as this acts as a Calcium regulator and will help avoid some of the toxic effects of vitD such as random calcium deposits in the internal organs ect, if you cant get K2 than reduce you calcium intake. incidentally raw eggs are a good source of VitD & K2 and the human body can produce VitD naturally when the skin is exposed to UV from the Sun I would recommend you get the WHO 2008 IARC working group reports vol 5 Vitamin D & Cancer. I would consider taking Zinc, Selenium as well as immune support vitamins A & E as well. WARNING >>>> You must not exceed Zinc or VitD these are very powerful immune regulators To know about VitC and cancer I would refer you to the Linus Pauling work on VitC for Cancer |

Oh Johnray, I am so very sorry. We may all fail to agree on what God is, but I think we all agree that is where she is now.
In a life with such a sad end, at least she had you to the last. If I were faced with similar, My husbands strength would be what I needed most. I know there is no effective conciliation I can offer you, but you were probably her silver lining: I deeply hope that can be yours. You are both in my prayers. Maggie

I have been where you are at, lost my wife 5 years ago. No words can change the feelings that we feel when this happens, loneliness, remorse, guilt. But remember that she is resting peacefully now till the resurrection when Jesus comes. Hang in there as the second coming of Jesus is soon and we will be rejoined with our loved ones in perfect health.

Terrible news, my old dear friend here on AFT. A very sad time indeed. I'm really not sure what to say John. Very sad news. This journey over the last 6 months has touched a lot of hearts, and thank you for letting us be a part of your life. I think we all feel that we've come to know Nancy in a small way over the months. 43 years is absolutely astounding, and true testament to love. If I only had what you had my friend. A very rare love that was meant to be. We will all be thinking of you over the coming days, and beyond.
And to HappyCamper, my condolences to you as well my friend. Time never seems to heal many things with pain at that level. The following is probably a little too soon to post for John, but HappyCamper's post somewhat prompted it: _________________________________________________ From the depths of old internet comments comes another incredible gem of a story. One user wrote the following heartfelt plea online: "My friend just died. I don't know what to do." The rest of the post has been deleted, only the title remains. However, the helpful responses live on, and one of them was absolutely incredible. The reply by this self-titled "old guy" might just change the way you approach life and death. I'm old. What that means is that I've survived (so far) and a lot of people I've known and loved did not. I've lost friends, best friends, acquaintances, co-workers, grandparents, mom, relatives, teachers, mentors, students, neighbors, and a host of other folks. I have no children, and I can't imagine the pain it must be to lose a child. But here's my two cents... I wish I could say you get used to people dying. But I never did. I don't want to. It tears a hole through me whenever somebody I love dies, no matter the circumstances. But I don't want it to "not matter". I don't want it to be something that just passes. My scars are a testament to the love and the relationship that I had for and with that person. And if the scar is deep, so was the love. So be it. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are a testament that I can love deeply and live deeply and be cut, or even gouged, and that I can heal and continue to live and continue to love. And the scar tissue is stronger than the original flesh ever was. Scars are a testament to life. Scars are only ugly to people who can't see. As for grief, you'll find it comes in waves. When the ship is first wrecked, you're drowning, with wreckage all around you. Everything floating around you reminds you of the beauty and the magnificence of the ship that was, and is no more. And all you can do is float. You find some piece of the wreckage and you hang on for a while. Maybe it's some physical thing. Maybe it's a happy memory or a photograph. Maybe it's a person who is also floating. For a while, all you can do is float. Stay alive. In the beginning, the waves are 100 feet tall and crash over you without mercy. They come 10 seconds apart and don't even give you time to catch your breath. All you can do is hang on and float. After a while, maybe weeks, maybe months, you'll find the waves are still 100 feet tall, but they come further apart. When they come, they still crash all over you and wipe you out. But in between, you can breathe, you can function. You never know what's going to trigger the grief. It might be a song, a picture, a street intersection, the smell of a cup of coffee. It can be just about anything...and the wave comes crashing. But in between waves, there is life. Somewhere down the line, and it's different for everybody, you find that the waves are only 80 feet tall. Or 50 feet tall. And while they still come, they come further apart. You can see them coming. An anniversary, a birthday, or Christmas, or landing at O'Hare. You can see it coming, for the most part, and prepare yourself. And when it washes over you, you know that somehow you will, again, come out the other side. Soaking wet, sputtering, still hanging on to some tiny piece of the wreckage, but you'll come out. Take it from an old guy. The waves never stop coming, and somehow you don't really want them to. But you learn that you'll survive them. And other waves will come. And you'll survive them too. If you're lucky, you'll have lots of scars from lots of loves. And lots of shipwrecks. |
