Here are some natural types of antivirals. Does anyone know anything about these?
1.) Curcumin (Need to take with Piperine, which is found in black pepper.) 2.) Scullcap (scuttellaria) 3.) Resveratrol 4.) Inosine 5.) Cat’s Claw |

Hello, I grew up on an organic farm and my mother is a natural homeopath. She and others including myself believe that one natural anti-viral agent is Colloidal Silver. Through out my childhood and to this day we as a family have taken it and we believe it has helped us be healthier than your average person. I highly recommend looking into this and do your own research on Colloidal Silver. At little history, The Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and many peoples from the "Dark Ages" used silver in one form or another to preserve food and water. In the "Middle Ages," during the plagues, silverware protected the wealthy from the full brunt of its ravages. In the old west, pioneers used silver coins to preserve milk and water. In the last century, man was beginning to develop more sophisticated forms of silver to kill germs. In 1938, the FDA was formed, Penicillin was introduced and the modern pharmaceutical industry began to dominate anti-microbial science. Since silver preparations were more expensive they receded from favor. The use of some silver preparations in modern, mainstream medicine have survived until this "Modern Age." Among them are the use of dilute silver nitrate in newborn babies' eyes to protect from infection and the use of "Silvadine," a silver based salve, in virtually every burn ward in America to kill infection. A silver coated nylon material was patented as "Silvalon" and licensed by FDA as an antimicrobial bandage. Clearly, silver has been established as a germ killer in the historical record. I forgot about Colloidal Silver. I have used it in the past to cure sinus infections and stomach problems when nothing else would work. |

Here is a link to a Chinese Herbal Medicine site. Check the article in the center of the page re Chinese Herbal Medicines response the Influenza. Antivirals and preventitive herbal protocols are listed. The Dr. that is the founder of "Seven Forests" brand of herbs uses TCM, Western herbs as well as other modalaties, such as ayurevedic herbs. He is a chemist and has taken herbal analysis and treatment to a whole new level. If your a TCM practioner and you want results, you carry this brand. He puts together formulas based on not only TCM theory and concepts but on through chemical analysis, does extensive laboratory testing on compounds, double blind studies etc. His formulas are second to none. The website has sections for herbal study and further info. As an asside, my daughter got a nasty flu like bug last week. Yellow sticky cough, stuffy nose, fever, HA... (Obviously NOT H5N1) Usually this bug has been knocking people out chills fever, body aches, nasty cough w/ chest congestion, and hanging on for weeks. We used a Seven Forests formula spesific to her S&S and it was gone in four days. No cough, no congestion, nothing. Nope it wasn't just a cold. This is what I'm stocking up on, will be giving to my kids and patients. Check out the site. It lists herbal formulas and treatments for Influenza. Although H5N1 is obviously different from the "normal" flu, the treatment theory still applies. You can also buy the book called "Bag of Pearls" that have all the formulas listed with S&S that may make finding what you want easier. I don't know if you can purchase the herbs on this site but you can google "Seven Forests Herbs" and find a seller. Hope this is of some help. Peace. |

Colloidal Silver is ingested (drank). It is mixture of water and silver. Yes silver... I highly recommend doing a query search on the WWW. and be your own judge. It is no secret that there is quite a substantive body of evidence to support it's medicinal uses. The product you can buy at alternative health food stores but it is quite expensive. I would suggest purchasing from the net a Colloidal Silver maker.
Dejuan "Silver is a disinfectant for non-spore forming bacteria at concentrations three or four orders of magnitude below the levels at which it is toxic to mammalian life (about 1 gm/day for humans or 500 mg/L in their drinking water). This extreme mammalian-to-bacterial toxicity differential is the definition of an oligodynamic material. Sterilizing contaminated water occurs at 40 to 200 µg/L and 250 µg/L is strongly germicidal to gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria . The low concentration necessary for oligodynamic activity allows silver or one of its insoluble salts to be used indefinitely in contact with sterile liquids without silver levels building up to concentrations harmful to people (Thompson 1973). Russian spacecraft used silver as a germicide to convert polluted wastewater to potable water (MRI 1975)."

You should check out Black elderberry in a preparation called "Sambucol", or in any form. It is a clinically tested natural antiviral, that has effects as good as tamiflu, believe it or not.
Any of the high anthocyanin containing fruits or vegetables have some minor antiviral effects, but you would need to eat a ton of it to get any medical bennefits. I found some studies on the web, and most of them stated that the best form of antiviral in a natural form, came from the black elderberry plant. |

IMO I rather go with oregano oil and curcumin.---my personal choice anyway- if you check the chinese herbalists they are trusting other sources in herbs...I guess it is a matter of personal opinion.

I am relatively new to this forum and had some questions about sambucol and its use. After reading recently on BBC news online about its use in fighting the flu, I managed to purchase some lozengers here in Finland ( Apparently they will not stock extract before this summer). Co incidentally a week later I did contract the flu from one of my students, so decided to " test" sambucol. I dont know if it was the strain ( of flu) I had contracted or not, but I felt like I had been hit by a truck ( the worse case of the flu I have ever had in my entire life). When my husband came down with similar symptoms days later, I suggested he take some.sambucol also......All it did was give him a very upset stomach. I am now over the flu and as an experiment , took one lozengers ( the suggestion on the package is when " not sick ",to take one per day as some sort of preventative measure. Within 30 minutes I was vomiting and thereafter nauseated the entire evening. Now I am looking at the 4 bottle I bought and wondering whether to risk ever taking this again...of even considering giving them to our 5 children ( the label and insert says they are safe for even small children) Now for my question: Has anyone had a similar experience with sambucol? I know someone mentioned in the topic that you had discussed it previously but I cant find the link. Could both of us possibly have some sort of allergy to elderberries? Thanks for any responses beforehand. Trish in Helsinki, FINLAND |

Welcome Trish! Here's what I know about Samboucol. Elderberry is a hemaggluttin inhibator. Standardized Elderberry Syrup Shortens the Severity and Duration of Influenza in Adults There are two sides to the story of using Sambucol in the fight against Bird flu. The first is that it has shown to be effective in limiting the virions ability to replicate. The second argument is based on the products ability to raise cytokines and hence possibly exacerbate a cytokine storm. Both arguments have merit.

This is information from Butch Owen, one of my most trusted suppliers of essential oil. His website is:
http://www.AV-AT.com * - - - - - - - - - - - FACTS ON THE ORIGANUMS - - - - - - - - - - All of the Origanums except the Origanum dubium Linalool Type are carvacrol-rich and carvacrol is the active therapeutic component people seek.* Higher carvacrol aromatic plants are more expensive to purchase. * We have some plants that will produce oils with carvacrol levels over 80%. This means you get more bang for the buck when mixing it with olive oil or whatever.* You use less oil to get the same results. Origanum vulgare is the best seller.* Maybe people associate the name and the fact that there is one company making some fairly sound health claims and selling it as "Oil of Oregano" in a 10% Oregano/90% Olive Oil mixture for as much as $29.95 per 2/3 ounce bottle.* So people see mine as being less costly.* With mine, one can mix their own and create a dozen bottles of the $29.95 product for less than half the price. Origanum onites has been the next best seller and that might be due to some things I've written on it and a portion of the lecture I gave at an AT Conference in Toronto, Canada in September 1999.* I presented research conducted by five prominent professors in Turkey using Origanum onites in a project involving lung tumors in rats, using three different groups and three treatments, one of them being normal cancer treatments. I presented the study, showed the audience colored micro slides of the lung tissues.* The Origanum onites not only stopped the growth but also caused recession of the growths!* The lung tissue was reverting to its previously normal pink and clear state!!* I made it clear that this is not an indication that it will cure cancer in humans but it shows a great need for further research and such research is ongoing. Origanum dubium (Carvacrol Type) is the next best seller, possibly because it appears to have a lighter odor than the others.** Turks generally prefer it for home medication. Origanum dubium (Linalool type) is in its own class .. a very nice odor and dual therapeutic value.* It's high in linalool, as is lavender, and high in carvacrol, as is oregano.* It has healing properties of oregano and lavender .. so much so that the common name in Turkey is Lavanta Kekik (Lavender Oregano.)* It's endemic to Turkey - not found elsewhere and even here it's only found in a very small corner of the Southeast. When people get samples of it from us, they buy it.* I normally use it for inhalation and it is great for diffusion - I love the odor. I prefer Origanum vulgare, Origanum onites and Origanum dubium for kicking Big Bad Bug Butts but I do not make recommendations to others on ingestion of essential oils. I recommend buyers consult their doctor prior to this manner of usage. So - one can choose based on the above descriptions of each oil. For colds and flu, I use the onites, vulgare or dubium.** For diffusion any one will do the job but just for inhalation, I'd go with the O. dubium (Linalool type) because I love the odor.* All have proven antiseptic, antimicrobial, antifungal, anti-spasmodic properties and they are believed to be capable of stimulating the immune system. *********************************** On a personal note - I have used O.vugare pure essential oil for treatment of colds and flu. I use 3 drops in a gelatin capsule - and it always stops the cold right away. I have given this to friends and family when they are fully engaged in the cold/flu - and they have taken this dose 2x a day up to 3 days - really helps! I would not recommend this for someone with liver or gallbadder problems. |

more info:
The USDA's Agriculture Research Service has a Phytochemical and Ethnobotanical database compiled by Dr. James Duke. His entry is for Origanum vulgare, without distinguishing whether it is the species or one of the subspecies, or a mix. However, the constituents are probably closely similar, if not identical; the concentration of the constituents will vary according to whether it is the species or one of the sub species that was analysed. The data additionally identifies, amongst the 119 or so chemical compounds listed: alpha-humulene, antitumor activity; low amounts of beta-elemene, anti cervix cancer activity; caffeic acid, antiviral, anticarcinogen, antioxidant, antiinflammatory, anti sunburn, hepatoprotectant, immunostimulant; delta cadinene, antiacne, antibacterial, testosterone inducer; rosmarinic acid, antianaphylactic, antibacterial, antioedemic, antihepatotoxic, antiherpetic, antiinflammatory, antilipo-peroxidant, antifreeradicular, antishock, antiviral, cancer preventive, pesticide; ursolic acid, anti-HIV, antiarthritic, antidiabetic, antihepatotoxic, antihistaminic, antiinflammatory, antimutagenic, antioxidant, antitumor, antiulcer, antiviral, cancer preventive, hepatoprotective, pesticide, piscicide Carvacrol is one of the most important and characteristic components of oregano essential oils. It has been noted as having antibacterial, antiinflammatory, antimelanomic, antioxidant, antiplaque, anti free radicular, antiseptic, antifungal and anti worm activity in greater or lesser concentrations, along with other positive, and some negative, activity. The activity is sometimes only present when concentrated in the laboratory to an un-natural degree. Oregano oil distilled from the leaves and flowers has been shown to be active against both fungi and bacteria. The phenolic compounds carvacol and thymol have well known antiseptic properties, and both oregano and thyme (which also contains thymol) have been used for millenia as effective herbal remedies (Theophrastos, who lived from 372-287 B.C., described oregano and its use ). The activity of some compounds is uncertain, as is the effect of all the compounds working together, but may well play an important part in the protectant and medicinal effect of true Greek oregano. When the leaves are dried in controlled optimal conditions, the health giving benefits are conserved in the dried kitchen herb. General antioxidant effects A recent study (Zheng, W. et al. 2002. Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, Vol 49: pp 5165-5170) of culinary and medicinal herbs identified oregano as the the herb with the greatest antioxidant activity. It scored higher than any fruit or vegetable previously tested. Oreganum had higher antioxidant activity than even vitamin E. ****** A good website is: http://www.positivehealth.com/permi...rapy/baud55.htm |

St. John's Wort is good (I take it daily) - but Oregano is still my biggest gun! *********** The antiviral and anti-oxidase active ingredients of St. John's Wort appear to be hypericin and the structurally-related pseudohypericin. Each seems to have its own pharmacodynamics, with hypericin the most highly studied, and presumably the most active ingredient. Hypericin is a naturally occurring photosensitizer that exhibits potent antiviral activity in the presence of light. While maintaining a good level of light is a potential problem in the body, there is at least one clinical study underway investigating the effect of hypericin on HIV in people with the AIDS virus. Hypericin may also have beneficial effects against other viral agents, such as FLV, cytomegalovirus (HCMV), parainfluenza virus, and certain types of herpes simplex viruses. There is speculation that by using chemoluminescence in the bloodstream, hypericin could be triggered to act photodynamically against viruses. Such chemoluminescence could be triggered by the luciferin-luciferase reaction (which is how fireflies get their flash). Perhaps exposure to proper wavelengths of light may also help. Hypericin may also have a lipophilic ("fat-loving") mode of action, potentially binding the lipid in viral membranes. Hypericum extract is more than just hypericin/pseudohypericin, and has been used clinically to treat depression. In Germany, it is marketed as an anti-depressant. In one study it yielded results far superior to that of a placebo. There was no negative effect on cognitive function, nor on concentration or attention abilities of the subjects. The antidepressive effect of hypericum extract might be explained in part in terms of a mild monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition, although the constituent hypericin itself does not act in this fashion. It is still uncertain which component(s) of the plant produces the anti-depressive effect, so the mode of action is still uncertain. The anti-depressive effect initiates over a period of one to two months. Hypericum extracts also apparently have some antimutagenic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-staphylococcal activities. Another ingredient of the oil extract, hyperforin, may have some efficacy in wound healing. |
