New High-path Bird Flu Outbreak in Nigerian Layer Flock

03 March 2015

NIGERIA - An egg farm in Ogun state in the south-west of the country has been affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza of the H5N1 subtype, leading to the death or destruction of 30,000 birds.

Follow-up Report No.4 dated 2 March from the Nigerian veterinary authority to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) outlines one new outbreak of high-path avian flu in a caged layer flock at Ado-Odo farm settlement in the state of Ogun.

Starting on 14 February, 2,148 of the flock of 30,046 birds died and the rest have been destroyed.

The presence of the H5N1 variant of the virus has been confirmed.
