Although I am receiving many reports of a new "Stomach Flu" in the U.S. which is making a lot of people very sick, there is almost nothing about it in the media. Reports are coming in from the South and it is spreading rapidly.

http://wkrg.com/2015/08/12/asms-shut-down-by-stomach-virus/

School had to be shut down for the rest of the week at the Alabama School of Mathematics and Science due to a rapidly spreading stomach bug.

At least 20 students reported coming down with the virus. Some students said they were throwing up in the hallway.

Initially officials thought the problem was small contained, but throughout the day Wednesday students continued to walk into the nurse’s office.

Administrators called in buses to take students back home, some of which live in various parts of the state.

The health department is testing to see exactly what the bug is. In the meantime the school is being cleaned and disinfected.

comment: will continue to track this in a period where other health services have very little Flu news which is not even suppose to happen in August.

Prisoners at the Handlon Prison in Ionia are dealing with an outbreak of stomach flu.  14 inmates and two staff members have come down with the bug, and prison officials are limiting movement around the facility while it is scrubbed down with bleach to kill the infection.

Around here we've got some kind of crud going around. Symptoms include the usual suspects: sore throat, congestion, slight cough, low-grade or no temp, some have swollen glands. This is not a simple cold as the level of fatigue and just feeling crappy is a lot more intense. I'm sidelined with it now and it's going around the plaza I work at. I have not ventured to the Dr. yet as the lack of fever tells me it's probably a virus, and I know I just have to wait it out but I will have to soon, as my workplace requires it when you miss more than two days in a row.

I must be getting old.  I didn't even realize school started this early these days.

Most all outbreaks like this are norovirus, especially when it explodes in a matter of hours.

New stomach bug hits United States - DC News FOX 5 DC WTTG

A new strain of stomach bug sweeping the globe is taking over in the U.S., health officials say. New stomach bug hits United States - DC News FOX 5 DC WTTG. Member Center: Create Account | ... August 7 2015 10:22 PM EDT 2015-08-08 02:22:02 GMT.

comment: This link will not connect. Years ago I had this problem as stories we taken down. The date is clear. There is of the course the possibility that there was an error in the date, but I am getting reports of numerous people with some sort of nasty bug and very very ill. If you will note earlier in this thread, there are outbreaks in a prison and also school.

As for getting old and school starting - starts in some places in the South in August.

Crowds will be smaller after Aug 7th as schools in GA start back on Aug 8 and a lot of people from Ga vacation here.

School started in Clarksville, Tennessee on August 11, 2015.

Born and raised in Silicon Valley i.e. Sunnyvale, California, we went back in September.

comment: recently the net - and search engines have been updating news articles with the current date even when they are many years old.  There is some type of Flu or something going around and since we are not in the classic Flu season - monitoring and reporting of it is really poor in the U.S. especially.

In reference to school starting days and the flu in Alabama. I probably have one of the only 3 posts concerning this flu on the Internet currently. This should not be confused with food poisoning. The families catching and very ill from this did not eat at the same place or not even in the same city. There is a site that tracks by report from individuals and I am trying to see if this has been reporeted there.

Thanks for this post ViQueen. I am having a real tough time tracking this anywhere on the net. Several people I have talked have been flattened with this for days.

Thanks, Med. I've been taking Sambucol tabs and Oscillo and was able to go back to work yesterday, so no need for a doctor, but still suffering some fatigue and a headache that seemed to be triggered from coughing/nose blowing. Yuck!

Am receiving reports of whatever this is infecting families and especially children. For some this has become diagnosed as full blown pneumonia and is very dangerous. As yet, the Flu monitoring in the U.S. is abysmal with many sites posting reports up to 6 months old with no new updates.

Will continue to track this.

Still tracking a new flu in the United States. Many people have this and for some it is quite severe. Since flu season doesn't start until October there is virtually no data even from school or outbreaks so far.

This bug can present itself with severe headache, abdominal cramps and vomiting, and an over all feeling of miserable.  It may not have a high fever and there is a characteristic cough which just will not go away. Lately in my area in California I have heard people coughing through the night and some quite ill.

As long as the health agencies will simply not report or publish numbers we will not know much.

This "flu" as h1n1 which have tracked and H2N3 can be pretty nasty.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Influenza_A_virus_subtype_H2N3

You may be infected with multiple flu strains at the same time as well as Norovirus.  We could be seeing the beginning of our new season already. When I was in to see my doctor, a nurse came in during our visit and insisted my doctor get his flu shot.  Hope I don't look that fluish although I have been fighting it off for almost a month. Also someone close to me and their family as well as possibly my son, may have it.

Sure don't need another Swine Flu adventure like the one I posted on here back in 2009.

http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/255456.php

Data gathered from 19 different countries reveals that the global swine flu pandemic which began in 2009 infected close to 20% of the population and almost 50% of all schoolchildren. The virus which originated in Mexico is thought to have killed close to 200,000.

comment: We are long overdue for not just a single Pandemic, but perhaps several viruses sweeping the world at the same time - "not if, but when."

Med- I've been reading about H1N1 in India! Normally during the summer months in India the flu dies out. This year it never did! The total number of laboratory confirmed cases this year crossed the 33000 mark with the death of more than 2000 people so far. This thing is changing!

So I just finished doing my clinical work to be a CNA.   The second day of my internship at the long  term care facility (late July early August)it seemed like EVERYBODY was getting sick.    The other staff said it was  normal... these people are heavily medicated and have a lot of health problems so bowel problems are to be expected.  Not every-bodies symptoms suggested norovirus but they all got sick about the same time.  I myself felt very unwell for about  a week.   Not classic norovirus though, I had a few very loose large stools, and then dealt with mostly constipation and a general feeling of being unwell.

The craziness went on for about 2 weeks.    It seemed like we lost a LOT of residents.   (I don't know that they died from stomach flu but a LOT died).   After being there 3 weeks things calmed down signficantly and their population was reduced by about 1/8 to 1/4.

Looking at the symptoms, I wounder if the the outbreak was some type of enterovirus.  Will norovirus produce very many non bowel related symptoms?  Is it possible for some to get a respiratory (cold like illness) from norovirus?

Hi, Med, the virus you describe seems to be hitting our plaza now, with many sick. The girl I worked with tonight described it as starting with GI symptoms of vomiting and diarrhea, then turning more into an UR thing with congestion and a cough. She still has the congestion and cough and says her stomach is sore from vomiting. She still has a bit of fatigue, but managed to put in a good day's work with me in a plaza that was filled with bus traffic on the way to see the Pope. I am, needless to say, on Sambucol and Oscillo alert because of working in a pretty enclosed area with her all night, and who knows what all the hordes of people we served tonight might have been infected with. Lotsa sick people running around!

Thank you ViQueen. It would seem tracking of this is completely off the CDC radar. I do know from multiple people I have talking to, whole families are getting hit with this and it is pretty nasty.  Also for some the nausea, vomiting, headaches, and coughing seems to go away and then come back.

Hopefully as October comes the government websites will again begin reporting and logging the infections. It would be good to know what strain this is. In some ways it is presenting as Norovirus, but the cough can be bad as well.

Even though this was a bit to dig for - there are some numbers for us

http://www.consultant360.com/exclusives/cdc-2015-2016-flu-vaccine-good-match-circulating-viruses?qt-in_the_headlines=2

Fri, 09/18/15 - 11:43

Currently circulating influenza viruses match well with components of the 2015 to 2016 flu vaccine and are sensitive to neuraminidase inhibitors, according to recent surveillance data.

“During May 24–September 5, 2015, the United States experienced typical low levels of seasonal influenza activity. Influenza A (H1N1)pdm09 (pH1N1), influenza A (H3N2), and influenza B viruses were detected worldwide and were identified sporadically in the United States,” said the study’s authors.

CDC: Seasonal Flu Vaccine Only 18% Effective
CDC: 2014-2015 Flu Vaccine Only 23% Effective
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

“All of the influenza viruses collected from U.S. states and other countries during that time have been characterized antigenically and/or genetically as being similar to the influenza vaccine viruses recommended for inclusion in the 2015–16 Northern Hemisphere vaccine,” they said.

According to data, 54% of isolates were influenza A (5% pH1N1, 95% subtype H3N2) and 46% were influenza B in the US from May 24 to September 5, 2015.

These viruses are similar to components recommended by the World Health Organization in February for the 2015-2016 vaccines in the Northern Hemisphere.

http://www.demingheadlight.com/story/news/2015/09/27/lab-confirms-first-cases-flu-state/72925610/

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Health is reporting the first lab-confirmed cases of influenza for the 2015-2016 season. The three cases were reported in women, ages 54, 68, and 77, from Bernalillo County.  The 68 and 77 year olds were hospitalized for treatment, and are now out of the hospital. The first flu case last season was reported in September.

We are being told that the new vaccine in the U.S. will be effective against the current strains of flu which are circulating. It is impossible to predict which strains will hit us in any flu season especially mutations of the viruses which may make them resistant.

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6430a3.htm

Influenza Vaccine Composition for the 2015–16 Season

For 2015–16, U.S.-licensed trivalent influenza vaccines will contain hemagglutinin (HA) derived from an A/California/7/2009 (H1N1)-like virus, an A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2)-like virus, and a B/Phuket/3073/2013-like (Yamagata lineage) virus. This represents changes in the influenza A (H3N2) virus and the influenza B virus as compared with the 2014–15 season. Quadrivalent influenza vaccines will contain these vaccine viruses, and a B/Brisbane/60/2008-like (Victoria lineage) virus, which is the same Victoria lineage virus recommended for quadrivalent formulations in 2013–14 and 2014–15 (8).

A/California H1N1 (like)  A/Switzerland H3N2 (like) B/ Yamagata (like)

The trivalent will not contain the B/Brisbane (like)

From Australia -

01 September 2015 , 11:54 AM by Sally Rope

We've done a lot of stories on the flu on this program in the past few months, and the importance of getting the flu vaccine - especially if you have a family member who's very young, or elderly, or who's immune system might be compromised.
But this morning, news that a strain of influenza NOT included in the vaccine - the 'Brisbane' strain of the flu - has re-emerged, contributing to the worst outbreak in QLD in years.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2849545/

For vaccine companies that plan to make quadrivalent (four-strain) vaccine that contains two influenza B strains, the WHO recommends including a virus similar to Brisbane/60/2008, which was a component of the Northern Hemisphere's trivalent vaccine for the 2011-12 flu season and is from the Victoria lineage.

So, hopefully this years vaccine in the U.S. will an improvement from last years which missed the mark and was only 18% effective.

As new cases are diagnosed we will see whether they can beat the odds of quite a few seasons where the vaccines missed the mark.

Continuing to track the New Flu and getting more reports of people with it. I personally cannot shake this flu and it keeps coming back. Symptoms are nausea, a bad cough, ear infection, sore throat, and just feeling really bad.

I put up a thread and a total failure of the flu tracking sites i.e. CDC - Cidrap - and flu.gov to put out any real numbers.

http://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/viruses/types.htm

Influenza B viruses are not divided into subtypes, but can be further broken down into lineages and strains. Currently circulating influenza B viruses belong to one of two lineages: B/Yamagata and B/Victoria.

http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/851199

The NH DPHS PHL has confirmed three respiratory samples positive for seasonal influenza virus (all influenza AH3) for this 2015-2016 season. These cases were confirmed in adults with influenza-like illness (ILI) in Carroll, Grafton, and Hillsborough counties. Nationwide, there is little circulating influenza at this point.

(there is far more circulating influenza than is being reported)

Again we need to focus on what U.S. vaccine covers in terms of flu strains.

Both trivalent and quadrivalent influenza vaccine preparations are available in the United States for 2015-2016; the live attenuated influenza vaccine (nasal spray) is quadrivalent. For 2015-2016, the trivalent and quadrivalent influenza vaccines will contain the following viruses: A/California/7/2009 (H1N1) virus, A/Switzerland/9715293/2013 (H3N2) virus, and B/Phuket/3073/2013 (Yamagata lineage) virus. This represents changes in the influenza A (H3N2) virus and the influenza B (Yamagata lineage) virus as compared with the 2014-2015 season vaccine. In addition to these virus strains, the quadrivalent vaccine will also contain antigen from the B/Brisbane/60/2008 (Victoria lineage) virus, which is the same as in the 2014-2015 vaccine.

What is AH3? It is a deadly flu strain.

http://www.dawn.com/news/761131/influenza-ah3-claims-life

http://www.wantchinatimes.com/news-subclass-cnt.aspx?cid=1103&MainCatID=11&id=20121103000005

The AH3 strain is more potent than the AH1 and B strains of flu virus and there is an increased chance that children may die from AH3 flu infections

(to be continued)

Hey, Med! People at my plaza are having trouble getting rid of it, too. One more got sick yesterday. Telling them all about Sambucol and Oscillo. Even gave some to a couple. I seem to have dodged a bullet with my all-day exposure to one sick gal last Friday. Worth noting that these are young people (teens and twenties) and they're having a rough time shaking it. Feel better and thanks for what you do on AFT.

Sung to the tune of "Tomorrow" let us hope CDC and others will consider October the beginning of the Flu season and start putting out numbers. Several people I know still have it and I continue to deal with a night time cough and stuff that just will not give up.

http://www.flu.gov/about_the_flu/seasonal/index.html

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) tracks flu activity in the United States year round and produces a weekly report of flu activity from October through mid-May.

I can tell you I had the flu 4 weeks ago, high temp, chills, aches so bad and a headache, and it turned into pneumonia. I am over 65 so I am not surprised and I had pneumonia so bad when I was 39 I was in hospital for 10 days on iv antibiotics. At least this time I was in hospital 3 days.

I can't wait to be well enough to get my flu shot and the new pneumonia shot. I hope my doc gives me 10 more days of antibiotics or I believe I will be back in the hospital in a week!

In all my years of datamining I have yet to run against a news blackout like this one. People are sick and there is nasty flu about. I still have it and it has come back for the 4th time. Many people I have talked to in the South have it, whole families and though the Flu Season has started we are still looking at old data on most of the government flu tracking.

I did get this

Update: Influenza Activity — United States and Worldwide, May 24–September 5, 2015

http://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6436a4.htm which does not reflect at all reports of flu activity. One article said it was like 5% which was below the epidemic level.   Earlier on this thread I put up what the new vaccine covers and the Trivalent type does not cover both Brisbane type Bs. So far predominately Alpha is being reported.

This flu is miserable and it keeps coming back. The cough is hard to finally shake - and the stomach component can be really nasty.  Best wishes to those of you who have gotten this including Albert.

Looking for numbers here. Even some schools must have outbreaks.

What is interesting here is that I went back to the plaza after three days off and now nobody is apparently sick. So I'm concluding that while this thing is hitting a few people very hard right now, it's not hitting enough people to merit a mention perhaps, Med? What could be concerning though, is what if it mutates enough to get more people sick, while keeping its current kick? Interesting, too, is that, so far at least, at my plaza the under-25 crowd got it more than the older folks, and had more trouble shaking it. That could bear serious watching over the next five months or so.

Feel better, FluMom. You're in my prayers.

"Serious watching" are the key words here. I continue to hear happy success stories of "I am over it" and "I am fine" followed in a week by "it's back."  The gist of this is a 72 hour flu which hits hard and then goes away.

A lot of this has to do with how old you are. Some younger people or young people period, can fight off things, where those in the 50+ crowd, and especially 60+ are going to have a lot more issues. It would be good to finally see some weekly reports for the new flu season at CDC which are due now.  It is highly unlikely the Flu season is over before it has even begun. A week or so ago, there was still a 30% infection rate in samples in Australia and no doubt, the Brisbane strain is still around.

tysm for the well wishes to all the group and I feel the same for our little family here in AFT. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, and always try to be positive and stay healthy.

2014-2015 Influenza Season Week 39 ending October 3, 2015

comment: Still trying to figure this one out.  We are are in the 2015-2016 Influenza Season.  And we are still seeing a map for May 20, 2015 with no update.

During week 39, 5.6% of all deaths reported through the 122 Cities Mortality Reporting System were due to P&I. This percentage was below the epidemic threshold of 5.9% for week 39.

So, is this saying we are only .3% away from an epidemic?  It is October 12th. The Flu seasons starts in October and there is Flu season activity. In addition to one of my near dear relatives who probably has it and can't get rid of it, many of you have got it and some have gone to the hospital.

Why is the reporting of numbers of people with the Flu getting more and more hidden and only infant deaths even reported.

It is hard to track if the new flu vaccine will work.
