NEW YORK – A third person with Legionnaires' disease has died as New York City investigators search for the source of an outbreak that has sickened dozens. A spokesman for Mayor Bill de Blasio says 11 more people have been hospitalized in the South Bronx since Thursday. On Friday, investigators found legionella bacteria at the Opera House Hotel in the Bronx. Previously the bacteria had been found in equipment at a local hospital and a complex that contains a movie theater. De Blasio spokesman Peter Kadushin says the third person killed was a middle-age man with prior health conditions. The man had been hospitalized. Medclinician |

New York (CNN)The number of deaths in the New York City Legionnaires' disease outbreak is up to four. Sixty-five cases of the flu-like disease have been reported since mid-July in the South Bronx, up from 31 on Thursday, the city Department of Health and Mental Hygiene said Saturday. Legionnaires' disease is a respiratory bacterial infection usually spread through mist that comes from a water source, such as cooling towers, air conditioning or showers. It is not transmitted person to person. Symptoms of the disease include fever, chills and a cough. 60 reported cases of mumps at University of Illinois since April Most people recover, but between 5% to 30% of those who get the disease die, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Although this case is several years old - it demonstrates how deadly this disease can be Government coverup of out break of Legionnaires disease in VA hospital. WASHINGTON – A group of lawmakers is accusing the government of engaging in a high-stakes cover-up that includes hiding the real reason why five veterans died in a Pittsburgh-area hospital of Legionnaires’ disease – an outbreak they say could have been prevented -- and how thousands more could still be at risk. “This has got the federal government’s footprints all over it,” Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Colo., told FoxNews.com. “I am stunned at the coordination that took place and that is occurring at the highest levels of government to try and counter the blame.” Medclinician |

The death toll has risen to 10 in New York's record outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, out of a total of 101 people diagnosed with the form of pneumonia, authorities said today. Ninety-four people have been admitted to the hospital with the infection since the outbreak began on July 10 in the Bronx, the poorest county in the state. The disease is spread by a bacteria, which has recently been discovered in the cooling towers of five buildings in the South Bronx area. Medclinician |

It's not over.
http://www.reuters.com/article/2015/08/11/us-usa-health-legionnaires-idUSKCN0QG1BC20150811 New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, reacting to a deadly outbreak of Legionnaires' disease, proposed legislation on Monday to register and maintain the city's estimated 2,500 cooling towers, some of which are being blamed for the illness. On Monday the death toll was raised to 12 from 10 on Saturday and the number of cases to 113 from 108. Officials said the higher figures stem from new reporting, not new deaths or cases. "All levels of government have been in close coordination and now we are turning our attention to ensuring we can handle any such outbreak in the future and, in fact, prevent any such outbreak," de Blasio said at a press conference on Monday. The
proposal comes as both city and state health officials work to find and
disinfect every cooling tower in the city. In the South Bronx area,
inspectors have found 39 such towers, 12 of which have tested positive
for Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' when it is
inhaled through mist. Medclinician |

A recent spat Legionnaire's Disease throughout New York City, which is being caused by city health officials "the biggest outbreak of the disease" in recent history, has gotten worse. According to a recent report, "The Total of 86 infections has already led to 10 deaths as per a recent announcement by Mayor Bill DeBlaisio comment: Is this simply a problem with the cooling units and easily remedied by cleaning them? Were all the outbreaks traceable to these units or has the disease evolved into a more deadly strain? This has a CFR just based on the reported and confirmed cases of 12%. This much higher than what general has occurred in the last Flu seasons in the U.S. Medclinician tracking and reporting the real news |

"We are in the midst of the largest outbreak of Legionella that we've seen in the city and we want to know that all of the cooling towers in the city are in good maintenance", she said. Jennings, the Jefferson County Public Health Department's information officer, said the disease seems to be isolated to New York City. In addition, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Monday (August 3) that the city would be putting together a "comprehensive package" of new legislation created to prevent future outbreaks, USA Today reported. Thanks, Med! This is in my wheelhouse....I did research on Legionaire's Disease in the early 1980s, when we isolated it from sewage treatment plant aerosols. The stuff loves water and is ubiquitous. In this outbreak, we had a "perfect storm" of poorly maintained rooftop cooling systems, weather conducive of the aerosol transmission, and a highly susceptible population with poor respiratory health (smoking, asthma, cancer, age etc.). This is a much larger recreation of the first widely recognized outbreak of Legionnaire's Disease, which afflicted aging/smoking American Legion attendees in July, 1976 at Philadelphia. I doubt if it represents any kind of natural selection for a deadlier strain.

Thank you CRS, DrPH for some very solid data on this. Although people have died from this and the situation still needs monitoring and improvement, it is good to know it is coming from the cooling units and not some nasty spreadable new virus. Medclinician |

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/10/01/nyregion/one-dead-in-new-bronx-outbreak-of-legionnaires-disease.html?_r=0
One person who contracted Legionnaires’ disease amid a cluster of cases in the Morris Park section of the Bronx has died, the authorities said on Wednesday, as health officials ordered cooling towers infected with the bacteria to be cleaned. Thirteen people in the area, all of whom had serious underlying medical conditions, began to experience symptoms in September. The disease is caused by the bacteria Legionella, which inspectors discovered in recent days in 15 nearby cooling towers on top of buildings. The cluster was unrelated to an outbreak of the disease in the South Bronx in July and August that killed 12 people and sickened more than 120, health officials have said. Those cases stemmed from a contaminated cooling tower atop a hotel. Medclinician comment: It's not over |
