Buy NATURAL sponges to use as TP and sanitary napkins when your supplies are exhausted. They can be used and sanitized repeatedly. They will not irritate and will conform to the required shapes.
Natural sponges will be irregular in shape and hole sizes and be khaki in color.
Do not buy synthetic sponges for these purposes!

The "Yellow Pages" would make great field expedient toilet paper.
BTW, how did women, say 200 years ago, handle the "monthly visitor"?
What are the hygenic alternatives in addition to the one listed above?

I think rags were the monthly solution long ago.
Thanks again 2ifbyC for the tip about natural sponges. Mine just arrived yesterday and will be great insurance for the possibility of running out of TP. The company I purchased them from states that given proper care, a natural sponge should last for 6 to 7 years. |

Go here for sanitizing instructions: http://www.valleycafe.com/resources/sea-sponges.html .
Boiling was the original method but see above link for another solution. It seems that the baking soda method is gentler on the sponge. oknut,
Would you please post their sanitizing instructions if different from the above?

The instruction sheet that came with mine says:
1. For initial use, rinse out thoroughly with mild shampoo and water. Squeeze dry. 2. Rinse in cold water and squeeze dry after each use. 3. When not in use, keep in a dry place, but do not close the sponge up in a sealed container or plastic bag. 4. To refresh your sponge every 6 months to a year, mix 2 TBSP Baking Soda to 16oz Water. Let the sponge soak for at least 2 hours. Rinse, squeeze dry and your sponge will be like brand new! 5. NEVER USE AMMONIA OR BLEACH!! This will only deteriorate and weaken your sponge. My sponges were not purchased to replace tampons though. Just for general use and for possible use if we run out of TP. I'm sure they'd require sanitizing after each use in that case instead of twice a year ... NOTE - I noticed that many suppliers sell much smoother, small sized sponges for facial use. Those might be perfect for replacing tampons. Edited by oknut - May 16 2006 at 8:59am |

Cracked me up! Thank goodness I no longer have the monthly issue to worry about and don't expect to run out of TP - we've stocked a lot of it. But the sponges are wonderful for bathing and household chores and they'll outlast the synthetic ones many times over. It's just sort of an insurance policy to know that they could be used in a pinch for other sanitation issues. |

I think we are good-to-go on the tp issue. I came home the other day and one of the things I pcked up was about 10 boxes macaroni cheese for the prep supply. On sale. My wife looks at them and says "thats not the kind they like, the boys won't eat that". I said "if it comes to eating this, after a few servings of rice and beans, those kids will kiss me on the lips for ANY mac and cheese".
Thats when she saw the toilet paper. My big package of 40 rolls or so. On sale "there is no way I am using that" she said, and walked away. Couple days later I'm doing something in the garage and look over in the corner behind some stuff was a huge 40 roll package of Quilted Northern. Gal had went out and bought her own TP. Wonder what else she has stashed away..LOL Edited by JMcB - May 16 2006 at 7:14pm |

Do not use [reuse] sponges for tampons please. Your risking toxic shock syndrome.
the sponges are a good back up for TP and pads though.
Although TP isnt going to be a issue at my house either

janetn, TSS is one reason to use sea sponges as a Tampon. Read that on a site a long while ago but I didn't note the site. Do a Google on sea sponges and I'm sure you'll find the article. |

Ok, this could be of possible use to those of us who have friends and family on the edge (maybe/wanting to prep, but not doing anything about it). We can always say ok you can order some sponges, use the yellow pages, etc. as an alternative since you are not prepping, LOL. One of my DD's who is minimally prepping would have an absolute hissy fit if I suggested either of these alternatives. Reminds me I need to add to my 130 rolls of TP, that is one thing I have been slacking on. I have everything up to 8 months except TP and paper towels.

Just Google "menstrual cup". I found one site and there are more that have something called "the keeper". It's some kind of little rubber-like cup you insert in your vagina and you just empty it and wash it, no pads. I have no experience with it but had heard of it so you might want to research it. I'm done with periods. That's one good thing about aging! I just googled it and the keeper is at this site.
I remember my dad telling me that they did use rags in the olden days. He said there was always a pan of rags soaking in the bathroom as he had several sisters and his mom. Somebody was always on their period. Hence the term "being on the rag." Thanks for the info dad, lol.

The other option, you know, is to have your physician prescribe your birth control so that you take it on a continuing basis -- you skip the 7 placebo pills and just start the next pack. Voila, no period. Talk to your doctor about it -- mine indicated she didn't think there was any medical problem with doing this.
If you've got insurance -- particularly if you're dealing with mail order -- have the doctor actually WRITE OUT how the pills should be taken on the prescription rather than using abbreviations. It's more likely to be entered into the computer correctly by the pharmacist and therefore more likely to be covered by insurance. At any rate -- if you've got a sufficient supply of birth control on hand, you can avoid dealing with a period this way, as long as your doctor okays it. (Oh, also, it's still a good idea to have SOME supplies on hand. Sometimes you can get breakthrough bleeding anyway. But most women on birth control know this.) Leva |

I used to live in Indonesia, in a remote part of Borneo, and they did not use TP there. They used their left hand, soap, and water to clean. OK, you're saying, how gross, but there's a limit to how long you can wait without "going" so I did it and got used to it. After a while it actually seemed a lot cleaner than "dry" toilet paper.
Then of course you scrub your hands very well. People there never used their left hand for other things--you couldn't hand something to another person with it, for example.
It's better to stock up on TP but if you run out, there's always this option. As long as you have soap! Better stock up on that too.
There's also a great book called "How to BLEEP in the Woods"(that is the real title) that really tells you just that--all the possible substitutes for TP, how to select a good spot, how to dig a sanitary hole, etc.

Please, please , please everyone take heed of the warnings about toxic shock. I lost my sister to this monster 12 years ago. She was 32 and left behind a husband and 3 children, ages, 9,11, and 13. It is a horrible death. Do not use sponges as they are " bacteria magnets" which is at the root origin of toxic shock. Local stores have been having alot of sales on sanitary products lately in my area. I have a dozen boxes so far and I had a hysterectomy and have no need for them but someone will!! My small help for the community.

It is much easier to clean cloth well. Sponges always leave stuff in them lodged in those nooks and crannies.
But either way, keep some vaginal creams and suppositories around. I would really like to see a good home made duch (doosh) sp? recipe.
vinegar and water used to be one of the best but I don't know the amounts of water and vinegar to use.
I don't have to use pads etc any more (thank God!) but there are always cases of yeast infections especially if we can't wash as well as we would like to.
I wonder if, for outter area cleanliness, that peroxide or witch hazel is effective. Must go do some research this weekend.

Hello all, the little woman has been using "The Keeper" for years and says she likes it a lot. http://www.thekeeperinc.com/ She says it is particularly good for the "heavy days" when she requires alot of changing. I guess it takes a little getting used to being such a different method than normal. She could feel it during the first few uses and then got used to it. All I know for sure is that saves money on those feminine products.

Been using cloth for years and it works like a charm. I don't think you could pay me to use anything else.

Yay! I've found some teens to be more open to it than others. One of my nieces looked at me as if I'd lost my mind, another mentioned how great it was for the environment. It's great that your daughter likes them. :-)
