Can't remember the answers.... OK. I have buckets, mylar bags, and oxygen absorbers. I'm ready to put things in. Do I have to freeze the stuff I'm putting in to kill the bugs or is it sufficient to just use the oxygen absorbers? How many? (I think it's two per bucket, but am not sure.)

Also, I have a pack of 100 oxygen absorbers. What do I do with the leftovers? Can I put them into a glass jar to "save" them? Will they be any good? -- Libby

check with John at survival acres I think that you just put your food in the mylar bag and put in an oxygen absorber and close the bucket.  No freezing required as the lack of oxygen will not allow anything to live.  Richard

Any suggestions where I can buy some oxygen absorbers? Just bought a food saver, which I will be using for my long-term dry goods. Is that sufficient?

Yeah, some of my stuff is stored without too.... Thought I'd put some rice and beans and flour in buckets w/ oxygen absorbers. The stuff I put in buckets for y2k is still fine... -- Libby

I would like to put some bulk food into heavy duty large plastic sealable
bags. Will oxygen absorbers help the bug/spoilage problem using this
method. I guess I would squeeze the bag after filling it, to get as much
oxygen out as I could before sealing it.

How about dried foods...same technique OK? Can't afford those mylar
bags and don't have room for many buckets. If I just wanted a few
buckets with good lids, can you suggest what kind of local retail stores
might carry them at a reasonable price? (to save shipping costs).

Thank you. Rocky

Hi, Rocky. Do not use garbage bags, they have been chemically treated to repel bugs and will contaminate your food. However, I believe your save with the plastic bags we all get from the grocery store. You can buy plastic tubs with tight fitting lids at Loewe's or Home Depot ($5-6). Hope this helps.

Thanks Femvet,
Wasn't going to use garbage bags, but I didn't know that they are treated
with a repellent. Very good knowledge to have and I thank you. I was
thinking more in the lines of biting the bullet and getting quart and
gallon resealable food heavy duty food bags. Hate to pay the cost. If you
think the regular plastic bags we get from our shopping would do the
trick, if they are sealed with a tie, etc., that would help a lot. For buckets I
will visit a Lowese's or Home Depot when I can get to a large town. But
will also ask local grocers. Best, Rocky

How many people on this forum have purchased "oxygen absorbers?"

How many people ended up with way too many?

What is the expiration date on them, or if none, how long do they last?

Are ALL trash bags chemically treated to repel bugs?

That sounds DANGEROUS, like they shouldn't be stored inside the house but out in the garage - as obviously they must be outgassing something or another to have the ability to repel bugs.
