Black plague was rumored to be spread by fleas on mice

Mosquitoes  transmit West Nile, Malaria, yellow fever and a host of other desiese

It has recently been reported by experts that the feet pads of fliess can spread the virus.

Roches carry 32-37 known desieses.

birds carry flu virusus and on and on.

We cannot avoid them no matter how good a house keeper you are. Mice and flies will wait by the door on purpose and rush in unnoticed when you enter and leave your house. They are that smart. I have seen mice do some ingenious things to get into houses unnotuiced and stay unnoticed.

You might say I dont have many or any. But consider this. Bird dies. flies follow.  fly lays eggs. virus on feet pads. More flies. More dead birds. more flies. Same for rats. If they have a plentiful supply of food dead , alive or inbetween their population will explode.

Yoiu might say I don't have any mosquitoes. Right now, with society functioning properly these pest populations have been kept down through community control measures like helicopter spraying for mosquitoes etc.  Durring a pandemic is not a time to be trying to buy pest control if the community has to reallocate thier resources and skip spraying.

Plan that insects and mice will get into the house and into your preps. If you have preps in box containers they need to be put in heavy plastic containers. Any preps you can by in cans are better than boxed. may cost more but worth it for long term. worry free storage.

In your first line of defense your preps must include flying insect and mice repellants and baits. This allows them to eat, get sick,go away and die. (You don't want to be handeling dead species.) So anything that repels or that they can feast on and die somewhere else is good to have around.

They make flybait crystals and rat pellets. Fly bait , if not in stores can be found at farm orientated supply houses. Of course put the bait out of reach of children and pets.

Second line of defense: Sticky traps. Fly strips that hang from the cieling and glue traps on flat surfaces.

Roach Proof is the best I've ever seen work. Buy plain old Borax and sprinkle it around in the back of cabinets and behind stove.

They do have hormone traps that attract pest and kill them.

Homemade traps. you can take a two liter bottle cut the top off at the curve . stick it upside down back in the bottle. add something sweet and half fill with water. Flying pest will enter and can't fly out, tire and drown.

mothballs repel mive , moths of coures , snakes , skunks (rabies) etc. plus they can be used to make pipe bombs if the pest get too big.

zapper is great with electricity

Trust me. In a full fledged pandemic, garbage and bodies can be piled high and the flies, rodents and mosquitoes are sure to peek in their populations.

Don't forget to prep for thier invasion or you are leaving the back door unguarded.

Buy lots of off insect repelland, sticky traps for flies and mice. Mice and fly bait.and anything else you can get your hands on. Don't forget the ole fly swatter. spring traps if need be. (handel carefully, they will become contaminated.)

Also remember to layer your defenses.

I am not an expert and I know I left out alot but hope you guys will help complete the list of things we can buy to fight pest and things we can make at home. Pest are our Achilles Heel.

Thanks, Corn.  This made me realize I need to stock up on flea medicine for my animals - we live in the South.  You're a smart guy - so glad to have your knowledge.

We dont have many pest problems here in our semi-detached townhouse in the middle of the UK, but at the end of last year we got some mice, and they bred. We removed 20 mice, they must of reproduced in the house, as suddenly they were everywhere. Luckily they were a bit dumber than the original two, so the werent hard to catch, but I was cursing the timing, thought it would never end. None have been spotted since December 17t though, thankfully.

A lot of these hygiene and pest issues make me wonder if it will be better to have a pandemic in the winter rather than summer. I meanwe know that influenza spreads more easily in winter, but a highly transmissible H5N1 will quite possibly still be able to do its thing in the summer if its nasty enough to be a pandemic, and other factors that will exasperate general survival are worse then. Still we dont need as much heating in the summer obviously, and solar will work better. Oh well its not like we get to choose anyway, me shutup now lol.

Good point Corn,

I make fly traps every year as you described from empty milk jugs the I add 1/3 cup vinegar, 1/3 cup sugar, and 1/3 cup vinegar. I hang then on trees away from the house. It works great. I have also used red pepper around things you want to keep mice out of, it burns their soft padded feet. I live in the country and mice seem to get in every year in the fall and it takes a few weeks till they all get poisoned or trapped. Mugwort planted around in the yard is a natural determinate for mosquitoes, but it is invasive and just keeps spreading everywhere.
